Hi everybody! Sorry for the wait, but I think you’re going to agree that it was worth it. I wanted to make this chapter the best it could be, because it’s very, very important. You see, among other things, this is the chapter were Damien’s true identity is revealed.
Note: this song for this chapter is from the Disney musical Aida. I highly recommend giving the cast recording a listen; good stuff. And with that, I’ll leave you to the story.
Chapter 6: Elaborate Lives
We all live in extravagant times Playing games we can't all win Unintended emotional crimes take some out take others in
Too many choices tear us apart I don't want to live like that Too many choices tear us apart I don't want to love like that ...
I know you'll give me courage to face what I must face with all these complications in another time and place
We all lead such elaborate lives We don't know whose words are true An affair of the heart survives All the pain the world can do
I'm so tired of all we're going through I don't want to live like that
I'm so tired of all we're going through I don't want to love like that I just want to be with you Now and forever peaceful, true -“Elaborate Lives (reprise)”-Aida.
"The Source of all Evil", Eric repeated as he backed away from Cole, looking for a way out. Disheartened, he realized there was none.
“Hey. *Former* Source of all Evil, thank you very much. And I’m not your enemy. ’Cause if I was, trust me, you’d be a pile of ash by now.”
If the self-professed demon was at all concerned about Eric's attitude, he didn't show it. That almost made the young prince's misgivings worse. “Why should I trust you?”
Now Cole was a little annoyed. He hadn't expected to be showered in gratitude, but this kid was acting more suspicious than Piper had last time they met, and she was both his ex-sister-in-law and one of the people that had vanquished him-twice. “I hate to be cliché, but do really have a choice? I don't exactly see anybody else stepping up to offer you helpful hints.”
Eric had to admit the older man had a point, and besides, why would anyone admit they had been an evil demon if they were trying to trick you? "You said I had to prove myself to you to get out of here. How do I do that?"
Cole smiled, 'Progress at last'. “Well first you follow the path.”
"Oh, do you mean the path to enlightenment, or something? Cause I'm in just a little bit of a hurry. ” You couldn't live with both Grimsby and Carlotta without picking up at least a little sarcasm.
Cole, no slouch at the art himself, just shook his head “No. I meant the path over there, past the trees.”
For a moment there was silence; tumbleweeds blew and crickets chirped. Then Eric finally found his voice.
"There's no path there." He had been to this lake more times than he could count and the only path was the one behind him, that, if this were the real lake, would lead back to the village.
"Look again". That wasn't a request, and though he wasn't hypnotized the younger of the two men did as he was told almost without thinking.
Impossibly, there *was* a path. It was hard to see unless you were looking for it, protected by a leafy canopy. The human of the pair shivered in spite of himself. “How?...”
“You’re wasting time.” The former Source sounded almost melancholy. "If there's one thing I've learned, it's to make the most of what little you have."
Eric nodded, but stared the once-assassin in the eye so he would be sure to understand, “I don’t like this.”
Balthazar's human form looked back in kind “You don’t have to like it. But if you ever want your love and your life back the way it was, you’ll do it.” 'If you're the kind of man I think you are, you'll go.'
Eric turned without further comment and as he disappeared through the trees, he missed the half-human raise his hand in an imaginary toast and smile sardonically one last time, "Here's hoping your luck's better than mine, kiddo. Here's hoping." And with that Cole Turner was gone.
“Where’d everybody go?"
Flounder didn‘t like to be alone. Especially not in someplace he’d never been. And especially especially not when his friends could be in trouble. He looked around, but there was nothing but the same ocean over and over; even the plants looked identical. He was lost.
“Don’t worry.”
“Wh-Who said that?”
“I did.” The voice sounded young and playful.
“Where are you?” This was getting kind of scary. The voice giggled, “Over here.”
Flounder looked up. He saw a young mermaid with an orange fin and a cloth top with strands of lace and a tiny bow. At first glance, if not for her dark hair and lighter colored eyes, she could have been Ariel’s twin at the age when he had first met her.
“Who are you?”
“Umm. I kinda can’t tell you.” She even mimicked Ariel’s facial expression when she knew she was saying something you didn’t want to hear. It should have been eerie, but instead it was almost comforting. He reassessed her age though. She was younger, probably about six or seven.
“How come?” He still wanted to know who she was.
The little girl looked guilty, “I'm not supposed to be here yet.
Her answer didn’t make sense, but somehow he expected that. “Oh. When are you supposed to be here?”
“Not for a looooooong time”, she singsonged. “Well at least I think it’s a long time.”
Flounder nodded, “So why are you here now?”
The young mermaid bit her lower lip in thought before answering “Well everything’s so fuzzy and everybody’s so upset and confused I thought I’d come to come see you to make sure you didn’t give up. ‘Cause if you do then I won’t ever get to be here for real.”
Flounder took a long look at the child in front of him. A little girl who reminded him so much of his friend, but wasn’t her...Suddenly in the distance he heard the happy gurgling of an infant and a voice he knew well humming a lullaby. And he understood.
“Okay, I promise. I won’t give up. Not ever.”
“Good. You’ll remember that, no matter what?" The mermaid was anxious, "And remember tell the others?”
“No matter what.” Flounder repeated, meaning it more than he'd ever met anything in his life.
The girl beamed, “Okay. Then just swim that way to find your friends. They’re gonna need your help. Be careful!”
"Thank you."
Sebastian skittered anxiously across the field, trying to figure out how there was no water in sight when just before he had been in the middle of the ocean. He decided he didn’t like magic. Not one bit.
Up ahead he saw a figure looming. A human! But from the looks of it a young one, with short dark hair. He recalled one of his earlier adventures with Ariel, where he had met Daniel, a sweet, but kind of creepy, human child. It couldn’t be... Could it?
“Daniel?” he called out. The boy turned to find the voice and reached for the crab and picked him up. Sebastian panicked as he saw the boy’s face, “You-you’re not Daniel.”
He had the same dark mop of hair as Daniel, but up close, it was a bit longer, sort of windblown, and slightly wavy. He also had sapphire-colored eyes surrounded by long, almost feminine lashes, where Daniel‘s had been deep-set and dark. This child was about the same height and age though, so the mistake was easy enough to make at a distance.
The youngster blinked, “I’m sorry. I thought you said ‘Denny’ at first. That’s my name.”
“I see. Could you let me down now please?” Sebastian squeaked nerviously.
Denny raised a quizzical eyebrow, “Why? I haven’t hurt you, have I? Besides it’s easier to talk to you if I don’t have to crane my neck. But if it bothers you that much I suppose I could set you down.”
It took a moment for the little crab to decide, but he agreed to stay where he was while they talked. Denny was friendly enough and was happy to tell what he could. He revealed that this was the mystical island with no name, which Sebastian and the others were looking for, but he had no idea where everyone else could be.
When Sebastian asked what a child was doing on a mystical island alone, the boy’s expression darkened, and all he would say was that he was waiting for someone. The composer was unsure how to break the tense silence that followed, but luckily he didn‘t have to.
“I think I know how you can find your friends.”
There was a loud squeal as the crab leapt in surprise and nearly fell to the ground “Oh. How?”
Denny‘s eyes had a far away look that made him seem old beyond his years, “The island has a kind of will of its own. Just think about the people you’re looking for and it should take you to them.”
“Tank you. Goodbye." Sebastian was grateful to the boy for his help, but as he disappeared over the hill, he wondered if all human children were strange.
“You’re welcome.” Denny's shy smile was surprisingly warm. “Goodbye. And good luck." “I think they’re gonna need it. Right Mel?” he added, seemingly to himself; but the voice on the wind reassured him that it was not so.
Ariel’s thought’s raced. Damien knew. He knew. Heknewheknewheknew. He knew she was a mermaid. He had lied to her. She couldn’t trust him. At least she shouldn’t. But she still did.
His actions didn’t make any sense. Why had he bothered lying to her once she was in his castle? Unless she still had something he wanted.
But what?
No, Ariel didn’t think that was it. Something had felt off about Daemon from the beginning, but she didn't believe he was evil. She had always been a good judge of character, though sometimes she had let emotion overpower her better judgment, like when she had freed the Evil Manta or signed Ursula's contract. But even then, her gut feeling had been right, she had just refused to listen to it.
A cry of pain broke her concentration. Ariel raced to the sofa in the alcove across from the mirror and cauldron, barely recalling how she had managed to pull the unconscious sorcerer onto it.
“No! No! Please, don’t. Ariel...” Daemon thrashed violently in his sleep, but calmed almost instantly as Ariel gripped his shoulder to steady him. His ponytail had come loose and now his hair framed his face in a dark halo.
She was concerned by the feverish flush in his cheeks, and went to feel his forehead, but when their skin touched there was a sudden crackle of electricity, causing Ariel to pull her hand away.
Looking back at Daemon’s face, however, proved to be by far the greater shock. It wasn’t that his features had changed, but rather, while her eyes had seen the pieces before, only now could they comprehend the whole. She knew that face.
His hair was longer and his clothes were not the kind she was used to seeing him wear, but in her eyes, Eric was just as beautiful asleep as he had been the night she'd rescued him.

So....I love this story. Plain and simple. It's wonderful and I love reading it. On a second note, I actually gasped out loud when I realized that the song to open this chapter came from Aida. Elaborate Lives is, for me, one of the best musical theatre love songs, ever. It is my constant comment that if ever a man sang that to me, I would be forced to marry him immediately! Anyway, the story's great and highly enjoyed getting some Aida into my day!

Aida rocks my socks. I saw it about five years ago. Adam Pascal was still Radames and both the Amneris and Aida replacements were great. It was the second Broadway show I ever saw, so it has a special place in my heart.
Incidentally, Elaborate Lives is an awesome song, but my favorite Aida numbers are Enchantment Passing Through, A Step Too Far, and Written in the Stars. It's up there on the list though, and it fit really well for this chapter.

I LOVE it when plots thicken!!! I'm seriously curious as to why Daemon suddenly looks like Eric and how on earth Eric is going to proceed with the new information.
Denny's insistence to Flounder also has me worried about Eric and Ariel's future happiness.

Share, thanks for the feedback. It's always great to hook a new reader. That's kind of the reaction I was hoping for. That would be telling. You'll have to wait and see. Me too! He's my third favorite character, behind Future Chris and Piper respectively. Plus he's SO much fun to write. The sardonic ones always are. Cole might pop back up again, or he might not. It depends on if he has anything left to say.

As you can tell, I love the story right now! I think I know who Selene is and since I've done my fair share of story writing I believe I know where your going in this, but my lips are sealed. I've been watching reruns of Charmed on TV, because I don't have the dvds and right now the Cole episodes are being shown and I'm in Demon/Source of all Evil/ Lawyer heaven....

Little bit of FYI: I'm going to be away from home for the next three weeks. I will be without internet, so I won't be able to post.
Just wanted to give my readers a heads-up.

It'll be interesting that's for sure. I'm actually visiting my aunt and uncle to watch my little cousins while they're at work. But they're good kids so I don't expect TOO much trouble. LOl.
