This particular event happened when I was eight-years-old. I thought about it today and decided to write about it for everyone to enjoy!
I was at the hospital with my Dad for a pre-op check up for an upcoming surgery. I was used to these by now, so I wasn’t too worried.
We were waiting in an exam from for the phlebotomist to come in. That’s who was going to do the CBC.
When she came in, she looked friendly enough. She had blond hair and blue eyes. She was also wearing purple scrubs. I didn’t’ think anything of it at the time. She said hi to me and gave me a friendly smile. “What’s your name, honey?” She asked. I told her and she replied with, “It’s nice to meet you. My name’s Ursula.”
I was speechless for a few minutes. I gasped and my jaw almost hit the floor.
After I recovered, I tried to relax. A small part of me knew the events in TLM were just a movie, but a bigger part wasn’t’ so sure. TLM was a big part of my life and it was very special to me. Besides, TLM was the only place I had ever heard the name Ursula and it wasn’t a good thing.
Anyway, Anyway, Ursula tried to get me engaged in a light conversation as she prepared to take my blood. The whole time I just kept thinking, “Don’t take my voice too. Please, don’t take my voice.”
Ursula asked me about the kinds of things I liked to do. I told her I liked reading and writing and watching movies. I didn’t’ mention I liked to sing. I wanted to keep that bit of info to myself. She asked me what movies I liked and I told her Disney ones. She told me she liked them too. She asked me what my favorite one was and I said softly, “The Little Mermaid. “ Ursula smiled and assured me she wasn’t like that Ursula. I tried to believe her, but I still wasn’t’ so sure.
As she went to stick the needle in my arm, she asked me if I liked to sing. “This is it.” I thought to myself. “This is it.” I knew I had to answer her, so I nodded.
“What’s your favorite song to sing?” She asked as she swiped my right arm with alcohol.
I took a deep breath. I thought and tried to act like I was thinking hard.
“Tell her what your favorite song is. “ Dad prompted me. “You were singing it in the car on the way here.”
“Pa-part of Your World.” I replied.
Ursula mistake Ned my shaky answer due to me being scared of the blood test.
“It’ll be over soon.” She assured me. “You’re being so brave. You’re probably the best patient I’ve had today.”
I smiled a little at her compliment.
“I haven’t heard that song in a long time.” She said. “How about you sing it a little? It’ll take your mind off what’s going on.”
A part of me knew she was right, but another part was officially freaked out. I was trapped at this point.
I knew I couldn’t’ be rude, but I also knew that was the last thing I wanted to do.
“Come on.” Dad encouraged. “You sing really well. Show her how you sing like Ariel.”
Taking a deep breath, I started to sing the song. I was soft at first, but then I let the song take over and my voice grew stronger and a little louder in volume.
Before I knew it, I was done the song and Ursula was smiling.
“You’re all done.” She said. She smiled at me before continuing. “And that was beautiful.”
“Thank you.” I said as I sighed with relief.
“See?” She said, a knowing look in her eye. “I didn’t take it.”
I nodded to show her I understood.
“You were the best patient I had today.” Ursula told me. “And I have something special just for you.”
I waited with baited breath to see what it was.
Ursula handed me an Ariel pen on a key chain.
“What do you say?” My Dad prompted.
“Thank you.” I said wit ha smile.
“You’re welcome, sweetie.”
“Will I see you again?” I asked.
“Maybe.” Ursula replied. With that, she patted my shoulder and left the room.
When we got home, my aunt asked me how the appointment had gone.
“Great!” I replied. “And guess what?”
“What?” My aunt said.
“I met Ursula and she’s not mean anymore!”
Well, I hope everyone enjoyed that little TLM memory of sorts. How about the rest of you? Have you ever had an experience where you met someone with the same name as a Disney character when you were a kid or even now? If so, what was your experience like?
