Chapter 7
Ariel woke up then next morning in her old room at the castle she was wearing a pink nightgown and her hair was in a delicate braid. She looked around clueless to what happened yesterday where am I? She thought. Was she still dreaming she couldn’t tell. She pinched herself on the arm causing a piercing pain that ran though her arm. Nope definitely awake she thought. That’s when her eyes went wide as she remembered what happened yesterday. “I’m engaged to Eric… my prince Eric” she said jumping out of bed and twirling around hugging herself. She stopped spinning when she got dizzy and lost her balance. Thud! Was the sound that her butt made when it hit the floor. “Ouch” she said weakly. Getting up slowly her bottom was pounding like it had a heart only each pound sent pain though her body. She looked at her feet and giggled wiggling her toes around and bursting into laughter at the sight. “I’m a human!” she said raising her hands above her head and then bringing them back down to hug herself. She couldn’t have pictured this turning out any better. First off the sea witch was dead and all the merpeople had been freed. Secondly her father was (as far as she knew) fine with humans and she would be able to see her sisters and father. Which probably wouldn’t have happened if she got Eric to kiss her. They probably would have never found her she thought sadly. And thirdly Eric knew she was a mermaid and was fine with it and she had her voice back. Ariel sighed to herself and sat down on the edge of the bed resting her chin in her hands. Life was so good Ariel was expecting it to somehow go wrong. There’s no way things can turn out this good she thought. Just then Carlotta came into her room the large plump woman was Ariels favorite… when she wasn’t working she was like a mother to Ariel. And sometimes she thought Eric thought so too. “Oh you’re up… good Eric has been waiting for you” she said walking over to the wardrobe against the far wall of the room so her back was turned to Ariel while she talked. “You know Eric hasn’t stopped talking about you since this morning” she said turning around to give Ariel a smile. Ariel unsure of what to do, smiled back at her. Carlotta resumed her rummaging of the wardrobe before finally finding a dress for Ariel. “Hmm” she thought to herself a second “This should fit you it’s an old one of the queens before…” she said trailing off wondering if Eric had told her about his parents. “Before what?” asked Ariel curious by the fact she didn’t finish her sentence. She looked up to see the worried face of the housekeeper which she immediately hid with a smile. “Now that I think about it where ARE his parents?” Ariel asked noticing for the first time that Eric hadn’t mentioned his mother or father. “Oh sweetie” she said sitting down next to Ariel with a beautiful green dress on her lap. She put her hand on Ariels shoulder and looked into her eyes. This isn’t going to be easy she thought. “Eric’s parents died some time ago in a storm when he was seven years old” she said. Ariel gasped could it be? No it couldn’t I can’t it won’t! Ariel didn’t realized she was crying. “Oh it’s okay dear you didn’t know” she said giving Ariel a hug. “It’s not that it’s just… my mother died that exact same year” she said slowly and painfully. Tears now streaming down her face she looked at the housekeeper who was absolutely shocked. She then put on a comforting smile. “I didn’t know you lost your mother I am so sorry” she said hugging Ariel again. Ariel hadn’t known her mother that well but from what she had learned from her sisters she was kind and looked almost exactly like Ariel. “Could you not tell Eric about this I want to tell him my own way” she said to the housekeeper after they broke the hug. “Of course sweetie” she said smiling. “Now let’s get you dressed for breakfast” she said getting up to help Ariel out of her nightgown and into the dress. Ariel really did think the dress was pretty and thought it looked good on her. When she was dressed she decided for the moment to leave her hair in a braid. She was too eager to see Eric that she rushed down to meet him and nearly tripped a few times. When she got close to the dining room she slowed down and started to walk slowly she wasn’t wearing any shoes and the red carpet tickled under her… feet. “Well don’t you look beautiful” Eric said as Ariel walked into the dining room. She ran over to him and embraced him in a kiss which he gladly accepted. “And how is my little mermaid doing this morning?” he said teasingly making her blush. She averted his loving gaze for a moment smiling to herself at how kind he was. “Fine now that I’m here with you” she said jokingly. She walked over to the table and before she could even touch the chair Eric had pulled it out for her. “Thank you Eric” she said with a small nod. Eric just grinned and motioned for her to sit down. Grimsby who had been sitting at the table sipping some tea, was trying not to smile at the couple. They truly loved each other. “And how are you doing this evening miss Ariel” he said her name with an accent emphasizing the R. Ariel giggled and put her fingertips to her mouth to try and suppress the giggles. “Fine thank you” she said after she got herself under control. She looked over at Eric who was sitting down in his chair. “Eric told me everything that happened yesterday even the walk back to the castle so there is no need to fill me in” he said to you young girl who was sitting in front of him. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Eric staring dreamily at her like he had done the first night he had dinner with her. Ariel noticed Grimsby’s eyes move away from her and turned to see what he was looking at. She saw Eric staring dreamily at her with a smile on his face. Eric noticed that everyone was staring at him and snapped out of his trance. “What?” he said looking back and forth between Ariel and Grimsby. Ariel laughed at that which made Eric smile he loved the sound of her laughter it was music to his ears. “So Eric what’s for breakfast?” Ariel asked curious. She didn’t know what it was the humans ate she wasn’t able to ask when she had had breakfast last time. “I don’t know we’ll see when Carlotta brings it to us” he said. Ariel sighed even though she was with Eric she HATED waiting for things. The wait wasn’t long thankfully because the next second Carlotta came through the door with a bunch of trays. She placed one in front of each of them and hurried out of the room to attend to other matters that needed attending. Ariel lifted the top off her tray and looked to see a bunch of things on her plate. One was brown and had yellow on it, another thing looked like two eyes with yellow dots in the middle instead of black or blue or whatnot. Another thing was red and curly it looked….. what the word? Crispy! It looked crispy. It all smelled so good to her. Ariel pointed to the brown thing and looked up at Eric. “What’s this?” she asked. Eric looked up at her with an eyebrow raised. It just so happened that he was eating the same thing. He swallowed the food in his mouth and smiled. “Toast” he said sweetly. “What’s toast?” Ariel asked confused. “Its bread with butter” he said. He knew it was a terrible explanation but he didn’t know how to explain it he had always taken it for granted. It wasn’t something you learn it was just…. Known. “What’s bread and butter?” she said. She was getting more and more confused with each answer. “Bread is…………….um what is bread? I guess um……. Grimsby can you help me out here?” he said turning to the man who was paying attention to their conversation. “Bread is a staple food prepared by cooking a dough of flour and water and frequently additional ingredients. Dough’s are usually baked, but in some cuisines breads are steamed, fried, or baked” he said sounding less like a person and more like a book. Eric looked at Grimsby in shock. “You NEED to meet a woman Grimsby” Eric said playfully. “Oh so now you’re going to nag me just like I did to you?” he said raising a brow. Ariel couldn’t tell if he was joking because his tone was so serious but Eric knew he was being sarcastic. “Of course! It seems like a fair punishment” he said rubbing his chin. Ariel tasted her….. Toast and found that it was good unlike the way it looked. When Eric returned his attention to Ariel he realized that her plate had bacon on it. “Ariel that red stuff is called bacon and well its… um… meat” he said. Ariel dropped her toast and looked down at the fish sized strips growing pale (paler than usual). “Not fish meat right?” she asked worried. “No of course not” he said. He had fish removed from the menu yesterday much to many of his servants disappointment. “Then what kind of meat?” she asked curious. “Bird meat?” she said. It didn’t bother her as much if it was bird meat but it still bothered her considering scuttle was a bird. “No! Pigs” he said laughing at the thought of bird meat as bacon and also his fiancés lack of knowledge. “Well then that leaves me with one more question” she said. “What’s that?” Eric asked. “What’s this stuff?” she said pointing at her eggs.

Chapter 8
After breakfast Ariel went with Eric on a walk by the beach. Eric had suggested it at breakfast because he wanted to get to know Ariel better and thought that being by the sea was the best place. As they walked along the beach holding each other’s hand Ariel couldn’t help but wonder one thing. Did daddy kill Eric’s parents? The thought disturbed her to no end but the only way to know for sure was to ask Eric the day or month they died. She finally looked up at Eric and smiled at him while still walking. Eric smiled back at her and brushed a lock of hair out of her face and behind her ear. “Eric?” asked Ariel. She had to know even if it brought back bad memories for Eric she had to know. “Yes Ariel?” he said. He loved the way her name sounded to his ears it fit her personality and her looks. It was the most perfect name for a perfect girl Eric thought. “When… when did your parents die?” she asked slowly and carefully. Catching him off guard she realized he didn’t know that she knew about his parents. “Carlotta told you then?” he said. It was more of a statement than a question. He turned away from Ariels gaze tears threatening to overwhelm him. When he looked back at her his face was red, his eyes watery, and he looked sad. It broke Ariels heart. “Yes” she said quietly looking down for a minute. Afraid he would be angry with her or Carlotta for talking about something that was none of their business. When she looked up his face was no longer sad but understanding. He still looked sad but he was smiling. “April 17th 1459” he said solemnly. He blinked a few times and the teas he had been holding back flowed down his face. Ariel was shocked. There were too many coincidences she decided that there was only one explanation. His parents died in a storm created by… by… by her own father when he was grieving over Athena. “Oh no… oh my” he said sitting down in the sand bringing her knees to her chest and resting her head on them. Tears began to stream down her face. “Eric I’m so so sorry” she said. Eric sat down beside her. “Why are you sorry it’s not your fault you were just curious” he said smiling through his tears. Wrapping Ariel in a hug. “No Eric… you parents… are dead because of… my… my father” she said looking away from him. Eric sat there with confusion written all over his tea soaked face his mouth was hung open slightly. He just stared at Ariel waiting for an explanation. “Earlier that evening on that same day my… my mother died… she was killed by a human ship” she began looking up at Eric to be sure he was paying attention. “That night my father whipped up the worst storm ever and filled it with all his rage and pain. He loved my mother and I guess you could say he went crazy because he banned music from Atlantica also. But anyways the point is….” Ariel was interrupted by someone breaching the surface. Ariel turned to see her father smiling happily at them before frowning realizing that they were crying. “What’s wrong?” he said in a cautious tone. Eric stood up and faced the king from the beach. He glared angrily at the king then turned sad and tears began to stream down his face. His bottom lip quivered uncontrollably and he turned around and ran off the beach to his castle. Triton was stunned at what just happened he turned to his daughter for some explanation of why Eric looked like he wanted to kill him then want to hug him for comfort. “Daddy we need to talk” Ariel said walking over to him. “About what?” he asked. “Daddy do you remember the storm you made after mother died?” she said choosing her words carefully. “Yes” he said solemnly his eyebrows crossing as he remembered the pain of that day. “Well that day… Eric’s parents died… they drowned in the storm” she said softly and sadly. Triton was taken aback by what his daughter just said. “Oh” he said sadly. He felt terrible! Ariel only lost her mother but because of him Eric lost BOTH parents that day. “What am I going to do?” he asked Ariel.

Chapter 9
Ariel watched her father leave and sighed to herself. She turned around at looked up at the castle in the distance she needed to talk to Eric… but how? How will she convince him that her father didn’t mean it? Or at least he regrets it now. “Oh Eric” she sighed softly o herself and began walking towards the castle. The wind was picking up now and making her hair fly all over the place. She walked up the marble steps to the palace entrance and opened the door. She was expecting to find no sign of Eric on the first floor but was surprised when she saw him sitting in his chair in the library. That was easy she thought to herself walking into the room silently. “Hi Ariel” he said slowly softly and sadly. Ariels heart broke when she heard him talk he didn’t even look up at her he just kept staring at the floor! She had always wished that she could talk to someone who knew what she had gone through other than her sisters but now that her wish came true it wasn’t under the best circumstances. “How you doing sweetie?” she asked in a sweet voice. Eric looked up at Ariel he had tears streaming down his beautiful face and his eyes were red. “I-I-I-I’m fine is just…. This all brought back memories that I had kept hidden for years” he said. He managed a smile through his tear stricken face. “So you’re not mad at daddy?” she asked carefully as if Eric was an animal that would run away at any moment. “No… not really I mean there will always still be a part of me that will hate him for it but… he didn’t know” he said in an understanding and mature tone that surprised Ariel. For eighteen he thought about things like someone who was fifty years old. I guess that’s one of things I love about him she thought with a smile. “That’s good to hear but… why did you act like that in front of my father?” she asked sitting down in his lap and wrapping her arms around his neck. “Well I was still in shock at what you told me and I blamed him at the moment” he said. His tears were now dried and you wouldn’t have been able to tell that he was crying a second ago. His eyes were still red though from him rubbing them. Ariel rested her head on his chest, her arms were now wrapped around his waist and he was slowly and gently rubbing her back. “Hey Ariel?” said Eric after a moment of silence still stroking her back. “Hmm?” Ariel answered still resting her head on his chest. “Want to go and see some of the shops in the town later?” he asked looking down at her. “I know you didn’t get to see much of the town the second day and I thought I would introduce you to some of the townspeople” he explained. Ariel looked up at him beaming with enthusiasm. All of her sadness and anguish over what had just happened disappeared. She loved the town it was the first place she had danced with Eric, seen chickens, and almost kissed Eric. “Of course I would like to go Eric!” she said enthusiastically. Eric smiled and chuckled taking Ariels hand in his stroking her hand with his finger. It continued to surprise him just how soft her skin was and how flawless it was too. “Actually I think you should meet one of my friends Mr. Anderson. He just recently published a story that I think you’ll like” he said smiling. Ariel leaned her head against Eric’s chest and smiled. “You do realize” she said. “You’re going to have to read it to me”. She said smiling and stroking his chest with her small soft hand. Eric smiled himself and forgot about what had just happened. Nothing matter to him because Ariel was with him. His Ariel, He always felt better when she was around.

Chapter 10 Thank the maker?
Eric had gotten dressed in a shirt and black pants with black boots… in other words exactly the same as he did when they first went to town. Ariel however chose to wear a beautiful red one piece dress that hugged her body reveling her curves. It was a deeper red than her hair which came down on her shoulders. In other words she looked stunning! Eric smiled to himself when he realized that she would never buy a lot of makeup like human girls. She was perfect already and she didn’t care how she looked anyways though you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at her. “Are you ready?” he asked. As she walked down the stairs wearing thin flat black shoes. “Yep!” she said. As they walked out the door Ariel turned to Eric. “Say um Eric?” she said blocking the doorway. “Yes Ariel?” he said smiling at her as she swayed in the doorway with one hand above her and then other below her she was tilted at an angle. “Can… can I drive?” she asked her eyes growing wide with excitement. “NO!” Eric said instantly his eyes growing wide in fear. “I mean um… not today… sorry” he said with a fake smile. He still remembered the suicide leap of faith she did over the ravine the first time he let her drive. “Awwwwww” she whined moving aside so Eric could pass. He smiled at her protests but she was over them pretty quickly. She was too excited about going to town and meeting new people that she couldn’t stay upset for long. They rolled along the narrow path that went straight to the village. The horse’s hoofs making a cluck, cluck, cluck sound as they moved along. Ariel was excited because she could finally ask questions about what everything is and what it does. When they road into town a group of kids ran alongside the carriage jumping up and down to try and see the prince. “Prince Eric! Prince Eric! Who is that in you carriage?” they asked jumping up and down still trying to keep up with the horse’s. “This is Ariel” he said with a smile. “And she’s going to be your future queen” he said with a satisfied smile when the boys stopped running alongside the carriage. Ariel looked back to see the boys staring at them with mouths open and eyes wide. “What’s wrong with them?” Ariel asked worriedly. Eric laughed as they pulled up to some shops. “Nothing it’s just they never thought I would get married” he said stepping off the carriage and running to the other side to help Ariel off. Ariel smiled and jumped off to be caught by Eric’s embrace. Ariel looked around at the buildings that lined the edge of the street. One of them had pretty dresses in the window, another had toys, there was one with food, and another with books. Ariels eyes light up when she saw the toys and ran over to the window and pressed her face t the glass like a little kid. A few onlookers raised their eyebrow at the strange scene but Eric just chuckled and walked over to where Ariel was standing. “Look! There’s buselwankers and jimigongs and oh! Dwindletops!” she said pointing at different things and naming them…. Incorrectly. Eric couldn’t help himself and after she had named seven items he burst into laughter causing Ariel to stop and look at him. She blushed a shade of red when she realized that just like the dinglhop… I mean fork scuttle had been wrong about these things. “Ariel these are toys used mostly to entertain young kids” he said chuckling. He was trying desperately to stop laughing but found the situation too absurd and funny. He tried a different tactic and stared into Ariels eyes… it worked! He got lost in her gaze her beautiful…. “Eric?” Ariel yelled trying to snap him out of his day dream. He had been staring at her like a dog drooling over a bone. But his face was so compassionate it made her happy to know he loved her. “What?” he said looking around. Ariel giggled and shook her head walking into the… toy store. What she saw inside made her wish she was born a human so she could play with everything. She giggled and touched a bunch of string puppets giggling even more as she watched them sway back and forth. “Ariel we should be going” Eric said thirty minutes later. She gave him a disapproving pout and slowly nodded her head in approval. They walked out into the street and walked across to another building that was full of books. “Henrys books” read a sign that was hanging by two ropes on a long pole that extended out of the building. As they walked in they heard two men talking one of them was aggravated and tired, the other was eager energetic and happy. When Ariel saw the owners of the voice she froze. There talking to an old man… was the first human she had ever seen. The man in the metal fish!

Chapter 11 Hans had been talking to the bookstore owner about him letting him sell his most recent story when he saw a flash of red out of the corner of his eye. Curious he turned his attention away from the store owner who was talking about how only kids liked his stories when he saw a girl with bright red hair standing next to Prince Eric. For a brief second he thought she looked familiar before he remembered where he saw her before. She looked just as he remembered only this time her hair was longer and she had legs…. Wait legs? She can’t be who he thought…. could she? He quickly thought it was just a coincidence and regained his composure. He put on a smile and walked over to greet the prince. “Good evening Prince Eric” he said bowing. The girl standing next to him giggled at his gesture and covered her mouth with her hand to stop the giggles. Eric only smiled and put his arm around the girl pulling her close to his side. “Hans there is someone I think you would like to meet” Eric said looking at Ariel who was trying to hide her surprise…. But what was she so surprised about? One minute she was running into the store all energetic and happy and the next thing he knew she stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of the young author. “I couldn’t help wonder” he said standing up straight and turning to Ariel ignoring Eric. “Have… have we met before?” he asked cautiously afraid that he was just imagining things and was going to make a fool of himself. But when he saw Ariel smile and reveal her shock and amazement he realized he wasn’t dreaming. “I do believe so” she said softy. Hans was taken aback as he realized she was the mermaid who had saved him only a year ago. “And uh where exactly was i? he said making sure he didn’t jump to any conclusions. “You were in a… fish” she said softly so only he could hear. Hans took a step back with shock the whole world seemed to be spinning around him. She was the girl! She was the mermaid and yet she was right here in front of him on legs! How is this happening it doesn’t make any sense! “Well uh… nice to see you again” he said swaying back and forth before falling forward unconscious. “HANS!” Eric exclaimed rushing forward to grab him before he hit the floor.
“Well discover a whole new word down there” said a young man with orange hair. He was talking to his cat and watching as the crew aboard his ship lowered his submarine into the water. “I’ve heard fantastic tales of creatures who live down there. The question is… are they only a myth or…. Do they really exist?” he said holding a drawing of a beautiful mermaid to both him and his cat could see. “If they do imagine the stories they’ll tell!” Anderson slowly opened his eyes to see a blue sky. Where was he? He thought sitting up and looking around. He saw that he was in a carriage. “And then I convinced daddy to help save Mr. Anderson” He heard a beautiful voice say. He turned to see that Eric was listening to the former mermaid tell the tale of how she saved him. They were in the front of the carriage and facing each other so they didn’t see him at first. “What’s going on?” Hans asked causing them to jump in surprise. He smiled at their reaction. “Oh good your alright” Eric said with a smile. Ariel also smiled back at him and pretended like they weren’t talking about him. “What happened?” he asked rubbing his head. He remembered what had happened but still wanted to be sure. “You fainted” Ariel said before Eric could reply. Hans finally realized that this wasn’t a dream and she really was a human. But boy did he have a lot of questions for her! “You… you’re your…. You’re the mer…” Hans started. “HANS” Eric interrupted. His voice was loud enough to stop Hans from finishing but not loud enough to cause them any attention from the townspeople. “Let’s go to your place and… catch up on things” he said as if nothing happened. Anderson nodded his head in agreement he was finally going to get his stories! He couldn’t wait! But then another thought popped in his head…. Why did the prince know? “My place is a bit messy at the moment sorry but it’s not the…. Safest place for a conversation like ours” he said. In truth his place was fine but he didn’t think it was comfortable enough for the prince or his… Friend. “Nonsense I’m sure it fine” said Ariel who was extremely interested in what his house looked like. She had only seen the inside of human shops and the inside of Eric’s palace so she was curious as to what his house looked like. “Very well… do you know the way Eric?” he asked turning to Eric who was in the driver’s seat. “Of course” Eric replied smiling. “Very well but I have a lot of questions” he warned. Ariel laughed which sounded so beautiful to Eric and Hans. “This is my fiancé Ariel by the way” Eric said turning around to drive. Ariel stayed in her position looking back at Hans with a wild smile.
