From Upi: Melissa McCarthy says 'Little Mermaid' rehearsals are 'absolute blast' By Annie Martin
Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Melissa McCarthy says rehearsals for The Little Mermaid have been an "absolute blast" thus far.
The 49-year-old actress discussed the upcoming film during Monday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
McCarthy plays Ursula in The Little Mermaid, a live-action remake of Disney's 1989 animated film of the same name. The movie is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Halle Bailey as the title character, Ariel.
"I play Ursula, the sea witch. It is so fun," McCarthy said. "We're just in rehearsals. It's been an absolute blast."
"Stepping into the world of Rob Marshall, it's like a fever dream," she added. "I just went to London for a week, I was like, 'I don't get to go to dance camp for a week.' All day he's like, 'Do you want to slide down this 40-foot clam shell?' I'm like, 'Yes! Of course I do. What are you, crazy?' It's been wildly creative."
Marshall is known for directing such films as Chicago, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns. He praised Bailey, an actress known for A Wrinkle in Time and Grown-ish, following her casting in July.
"After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance -- plus a glorious singing voice -- all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role," Marshall said.
The Little Mermaid co-stars Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, with Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder and Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian. Javier Bardem will reportedly play King Triton.
On Ellen, McCarthy and fellow guest Macey Hensley played a game of "Hail to the Blank" where they guessed facts about U.S. presidents.

From Express: Little Mermaid reboot: Will actors be under water? How will live action movie be made?
THE LITTLE MERMAID is an underwater classic - but how will they make the live action version?
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is the next film to get the live action reboot action. With relative newcomer Halle Bailey playing Ariel, fans are wondering what the film will be like in the end. One big question has emerged in their quest - will the movie be filmed underwater?
At the moment, it is hard to know given production has not begun.
HN Entertainment reported production would begin in April 2020, with some voiceover work starting as early as January this year.
As well as this, insiders told the publication Disney was in April 2019 looking at locations to film the project which included some very coastal regions.
Locations in the running included the Cayman Islands, South Africa, Maro, La Cala, Torre del Mar, Almayate, Chilches, Benajarafe, and Torrox.
All of these various islands are, well, very coastal indeed, meaning it looks as though water is going to be a huge part of the filming.
The publication also reported Scuttle, the seagull characters being voiced by Awkwafina, has been made a diving bird rather than a land-based one, so it can take part in underwater scenes.
This seems quite likely, therefore, the movie will take place underwater, with some scenes likely to be shot with water involved.
However, HN Entertainment also reported the visual effects supervisor on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Tim Burk, had been hired to cast a watchful eye over the visuals for the underwater world. With the actors also expected to sing underwater, with music provided by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the composer of the original movie Alan Menken, it seems unlikely they will shoot these scenes without some help from the visual effects team.
Whether the film will be shot entirely with CGI is yet to be seen, and given the dreamy locations scouted, it is likely there will be some underwater work from actors.
However, it is most likely the majority of the work will be done using VFX, but until filming begins it will be hard to know for sure.
Who is in the cast of The Little Mermaid? Halle Bailey has been cast as Ariel, making her the first black version of the character.
Her casting caused some controversy, but it quickly died down as other stars were announced, including Awkwafina as Scuttle and Room’s Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.
Daveed Diggs of Hamilton fame will voice Ariel’s trusty crustacean friend Sebastian, and fans went wild with the recent announcement of Melissa McCarthy as the frightening sea-witch Ursula.
Awkwafina voices the seagull Scuttle in The Little Mermaid
Prince Eric will be plays by Jonah Hauer-King, while reports have suggests Javier Bardem could take on the role as King Triton.
At the moment, the release date as not been confirmed, but shooting dates are reported as being from April to August 2020.
With this being said, if VFX and CGI are involved there will be a great deal of post-production work to do on the film, meaning it will likely not be until Christmas 2021 when fans will get to see the film.
The Little Mermaid release date will be revealed soon - so fans should keep an eye on Express.co.uk for updates.

From Screenrant: Disney: 10 Characters We’re Excited To See In The Upcoming Live-Action Remakes From Beyoncé as The Lion King's Nala to a live-action take on Stitch, here are some of the Disney characters we're most excited to see in the remakes.
BY BROOKE BAJGROWICZ JUL 15, 2019
Disney's continuing to pump out remakes of its animated classics, and while not every one has been met with glowing reviews, we're ready to see what comes next. More specifically, we're ready to find out what some of our favorite characters look and sound like in their new live-action worlds.
Disney's announced several re-imagined films, and while some characters have are yet to be cast, others are headed straight for the big screen in a matter of days. Truthfully, we're interested in all the characters set to star in Disney's live-action remakes, but here are the ones we're most excited about.
10 Mulan: Commander Tung
When Disney first announced that Mulan would be remade into a live-action adventure, fans were concerned to learn that General Li Shang would not be returning as Mulan’s love interest and army leader. Although Shang won’t be entertaining us, Commander Tung will.
This new character, portrayed by Donnie Yen, will lead the Imperial Regiment in Shang’s place. While we don’t know much about him, we do know that he is both a teacher and a mentor to Mulan. We’re ready to see this happen.
9 The Little Mermaid: Ariel
Although we already learned that Halle Bailey will be cast as Ariel in the upcoming Little Mermaid remake, we’re excited to see her in costume on-screen as Disney’s beautiful mermaid princess.
Will she have Ariel’s signature red hair? Will she still have a green tail and purple top? Although we don’t know how she’s going to be dressed, we're confident that she’ll look magical and ocean-ready. We’re excited to see the rest of her mythical sea family as well.
8 The Sword In The Stone: Merlin
The Sword in the Stone is getting a live-action musical remake that will debut on the forthcoming Disney+ streaming service. Although we don’t know much about the cast at this time, we do know that it's set to film in Ireland this summer. We’re particularly interested in seeing how whimsical Merlin turns out to be in this new rendition.
The eccentric wizard will be guiding Arthur through the narrative, and we’re hoping he's as enchanting as we know he can be.
7 Peter Pan: Tinkerbell
Very little is known about Disney’s Peter Pan remake. We don’t know when it will release, who is in the cast, or what it will look like. We do know that a script is in the works.
While the boy who never grows up has been brought to the big screen many times, we’ve never seen Disney pull out its own live-action version. We’re particularly interested in what Tinkerbell will look like, assuming she’ll be in the new film. Will she be portrayed by a live actress? Will she be created using photo-realistic computer animation? We won’t know for a while, but we’re ready to see it happen.
6 Cruella: Emma Thompson’s Character
Cruella de Vil is getting her own film, and we’re tired of being teased with casting rumors. We want a trailer badly. While we know that Emma Stone will be playing the villainous lead, we don’t know who Emma Thompson will be playing — but she’s in it, and that’s enough for us.
Cruella will be a prequel that develops the rich, fur-coat-wearing villain of One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Will Thompson act as Stone’s mentor? Will she instead be a family member? We need to know now.
5 Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs: The Prince
Disney is putting together a live-action Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and while details are still scarce, we can’t help but be fascinated by the idea. Who will play Snow White? Who will play the dwarfs? Who will play the prince?
In the original Snow White, the titular princess’s lover gets few lines and remains a largely undeveloped character. We’re hopeful that in any remake, he’s going to be given greater depth and a name that’s actually mentioned in the movie.
4 The Hunchback Of Notre Dame: Esmerelda
Josh Gad is producing a musical version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see Disney’s darkest tale come to new life. While we’re interested to find out who will be playing Quasimodo and Frollo, we’re also excited to see the spunky Esmerelda dance onto the big screen.
We’ve been told that the live-action Hunchback release will feature lots of new songs, so whoever is cast as Esmerelda will have to be a talented actress, dancer, and vocalist. We’re sure whoever she is will bring the charm Esmerelda is known for.
3 Lady And The Tramp: Jim Dear
This doggy Disney classic was made into a live-action film in the early 2000s. Now, it’s getting another update. We know what the dogs will look like, but we’re still curious to find out what Jim and his wife Darling will look like.
Jim is being played by Thomas Mann, who is best known for his roles in films like Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Kong: Skull Island. Darling is being portrayed by Kiersey Clemons, who appears in films including Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Dope. Lady and the Tramp will release to the Disney+ streaming service on Nov. 12.
2 Lilo & Stitch: Stitch
Okay, maybe it’s obvious that we’d be excited about a titular character’s film appearance. Really, though — do you know how long we’ve been waiting for Stitch to transition from the 2D space to the photo-realistic one?
The film is still in early development, but we bet Stitch will be even cuter and naughtier in a new, freshly animated form. We love his friendship with Lilo and can only imagine how cute they’ll be together.
1 The Lion King: Nala
While Beyoncé’s Nala is being met with mixed reviews, we’re still excited to see Queen Bey take on The Lion King’s leading lady. Even though audiences will have to wait a few more days to judge her voice-acting skills, we can already tell by the soundtrack that her singing doesn’t disappoint.
Beyoncé’s vocals are fierce as ever, and we’re looking forward to seeing the chemistry between Nala and Simba. Can you feel the love tonight?

Harry Styles was spotted wearing a 'but Daddy I love him' t-shirt, a quote from The Little Mermaid- a film he turned down to appear in and fans are losing their cool.
Harry Styles was spotted out having the time of his life at the weekend, but fans got distracted by his logo t-shirt, a direct quote from The Little Mermaid which says 'But Daddy I love him' and reckon he's teasing them after it emerged he turned the role of Prince Eric in the live action remake down.

After seeing the quote trending on Twitter, people went to have a look, assuming it was news about the film that's in the works only to find it was the 26-year-old 'Adore You' singer in the shirt.
Confused fans took to Twitter wondering if the singer was trolling everyone, or, if he's genuinely a massive fan of the film.
One fan wrote: "Harry Styles wearing a t-shirt that reads "BUT DADDY I LOVE HIM" after turning down the role as Prince Eric in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid is making my head spin" and another said "Harry Styles wearing a shirt with a quote from The Little Mermaid after turning down the role of Prince Eric? I actually don’t love to see it."

Harry revealed to Roman on Capital Breakfast that although he met with the director of the film, Rob Marshall, there were scheduling conflicts which meant he couldn't take the part.
He said: "I think it’s obviously going to be an amazing film...but they shoot for so long and I wanna tour next year, maybe. I haven’t announced that yet, but yeah, it just didn’t quite line up."
Even more ironically, when Haz's music video to the seriously emotional ballad 'Falling' dropped on Friday- showing the singer singing underwater playing the guitar, the comparisons to him being a real life mermaid flooded (excuse the pun) online.

From The Leisure Times: Halle Bailey and Chloe Makes Memories in The Latest Fashion Show By Casey Koonce on February 29, 2020
Whether or not it’s Haim, The Nolans, or The Veronicas, sister musical teams have dominated the pop charts for many years. Nonetheless, modern R&B duo Chloe x Halle has undoubtedly stolen the crown as probably the most sartorially-savvy sibling musicians within the leisure trade up to now.Halle Bailey and Chloe Makes Memories in The Latest Fashion Show
Earlier this year, the pair – who recurrently put on coordinated ensembles for public appearances – wore sequined-embellished black outfits for their rendition of “American the Beautiful” of their home city of Atlanta on the 2019 Super Bowl.
Last year, the sisters flexed their modeling muscles, posing for the Rodarte autumn/winter 2018 lookbook, alongside the likes of Grimes, Ava Phillippe, and Rowan Blanchard. In earlier years, they’ve sported designs from luxurious trend manufacturers together with the likes of Stuart Weitzman, Chanel, and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi on the red carpet.
And it comes as no shock the sisters aren’t afraid to experiment with them appears provided that they had been found by world fashion inspiration Beyoncé and have been signed to her label Parkwood Leisure label since 2015.
Nonetheless, it is perhaps time for the sisters to point out off their particular person style tastes and singer and actor Halle Bailey is now stepping out on her personal because it has simply been introduced she is going to play Ariel in the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Bailey tweeted “a dream come true” on Twitter in response to the information with an image of what her animated Ariel may appear like.

From UnionJournalism: Live-action Remake: The Little Mermaid Is On The Way !! The Little Mermaid Arrival Date, Cast, Plot and All other Exciting Details Updated! By Shreya Ganguly
March 12, 2020 1:55 am EDT
Disney is a favorite brand for many. Even I love Disney when every time I hear the name my face lits up. So is Disney it can have audiences from age 1 to age 100. That’s the magic. Nowadays Disney has become more towards live projects. Like Dumbo, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella. Also this summer Aladdin is coming up and so is Lion king. Now, what next? Yes, you guessed it right “Little Mermaid” is the next big thing. Let’s see what the makers have to say about it!
The biggest hype is that Rob Marshall is the director of the movie. Well, he has had some of the fine works on the silver screen quite a several times. Halle Bailey will be playing the lead character of Ariel. Isn’t that awesome? Yes, you might be remembered as a member of Chloe X Halle. About casting her the director Rob opened up and said that after an extensive search he found that her look is rare and it is a wonderful combination of youth, bubbliness and has a very good singing ability. So he thinks it is the right choice that he made.
But the Net world wasn’t much happy about the fact a black woman playing such an iconic character. But Jodi Benson the actress who voiced for Ariel’s last film said that the spirit of the character matters. It’s not the outside of anyone that matters. When she plays the role its Ariel playing and doing her stuff. Also, she cited an example by saying that she is old yet she sang ‘Part of Your World,’ but if people judge the song by looking at her it wouldn’t be a hit. Halle in a press meet said that she is overwhelmed at having the privilege to play such an iconic character. She doesn’t pay much attention to negativity that’s her mantra!
Jonah Hauer to play the role of Prince Eric and it would be a treat to the eyes to watch him act. Melissa McCarthy will have to act as Ursula. Exciting right? The cats have been handpicked by the director and its stunning!
Now the release date hasn’t been fixed yet. The film is in a very preliminary stage about casting and all but as soon as it does we’ll let you know!

From Deadline: Disney Pausing Production On Features ‘Little Mermaid’, ‘Home Alone’, ‘Nightmare Alley’ & More Until Coronavirus Calms Down
By Anthony D'Alessandro
March 13, 2020 10:40am
BREAKING: Disney is stopping production on its features until this whole coronavirus outbreak blows over. Those movie shoots include The Little Mermaid, Home Alone, The Last Duel, Nightmare Alley, and Peter Pan & Wendy and Shrunk.
No one has been effected on any sets by the coronavirus, it’s strictly a precaution.
Separately, we hear Sony has no feature productions occurring that are in need of pausing.
“While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on our productions, after considering the current environment and the best interests of our cast and crew, we have made the decision to pause production on some of our live-action films for a short time. We will continue to assess the situation and restart as soon as feasible,” said a Disney spokesperson.
The live action take on 1989’s Little Mermaid from director Rob Marshall was set to go before the cameras next week in London. Halle Bailey, Awkwafina, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs and Jonah Hauer-King star.
Last night, news broke that the first unit Australian production of Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Rings suspended production as director Destin Daniel Cretton decided to self isolate himself out of safety for his newborn baby. That movie is set for a Feb. 12, 2021 release.
