I just saw it and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen it before I write out a review. It was kinda what I was expecting, while I'm the target audience for this sort of thing, I'm really picky about quality vocals and acting, especially while the original was perfect in that respect and the animation truly captured the wonder of this story. I really only loved the live action one for reminding me of the original. To me, this unfortunately lacked a lot of the charm, passion, energy, and emotiveness of the original. And I reeeeeaaally wanted to love it, but I was left a bit underwhelmed, even though the costumes and sets were absolutely gorgeous for sure. I think what bothered me most was casting with weak vocals and weak acting abound. None of these people are bad actors, but I think they weren't given enough direction, they could've went further with the emotions. As soon as I started to like something, they'd show something I really didn't like at all and just keep focusing on it. I think what I liked the most was the interactions between Belle and Maurice and also the wonderful (underused) singing voice of Audra McDonald. What I liked the least was the lack of genuine smiles and amazement from characters who barely manage to crack a grin when they're supposed to and didn't use the full range of emotions in their faces and singing/speaking voices, plus the autotuned & soulless singing from many cast members was really grating. Now this has me nervous for live-action TLM and I'm now hoping Disney scraps it- I'm not saying this film was that horrible, from start to finish it was visually stunning when I went to see it in IMAX 3D and did include some new moments I liked (I won't spoil them!). But by the by, the remake just wasn't really necessary and made me long for the original. If they'd been more adventurous and tried to do something new and exciting to break away from the original, I'd give it points for trying, but I think this film was trying way too hard to be a total recreation of the original, and for me, it wasn't different enough to be captivating and it wasn't charming enough to be a successful remake of the 1991 film. Overall I liked it because it was Beauty and the Beast, but had I not seen the animated one at all, I don't think I'd like this that much. Anyway, let me know your thoughts here if you've seen it and we can discuss more things (there will be spoilers in this thread, I mean for the most part the story is exactly the same as the 1991 version, but there were a few new surprises), and then I'll write out a longer post will all my thoughts somewhere on this thread.
