From ABC7: TELEVISION 'The Little Mermaid' 30th anniversary live special coming to ABC this fall
Updated 2 hours ago BURBANK, Calif. -- Fans of "The Little Mermaid" now have something else to look forward to in addition to the upcoming film: a live musical event on ABC to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1989 animated classic.
Karey Burke, the president of ABC Entertainment, announced Monday that the network will present a reimagined hybrid version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring a broadcast of the feature film interwoven with live musical performances in front of a studio audience. It will include music from both the original animated film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage adaptation.
"Moana" star Auli'i Cravalho will play the role of Ariel in the live performances, with Queen Latifah as Ursula and Shaggy as the voice of Sebastian. Additional casting announcements are still to come, the network said.
"The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!" will air at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The announcement came as Disney, ABC's parent company, prepares to begin production on a live-action, feature-film re-imagining of "The Little Mermaid." The studio announced in July that Halle Bailey, half of R&B duo Chloe x Halle, had been cast as Ariel in the film, which is slated to begin production in 2020.
ABC also announced Monday that '"Live in Front of a Studio Audience," the Jimmy Kimmel and Norman Lear-helmed May special that re-imagined two episodes of classic 1970s-era Lear sitcoms, will return with two new episodes. A live holiday special is slated for later this year, and a third installment will air in the spring of 2020. Two broadcasts of the May special reached 22.5 million viewers, the network said.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of this station.

From Remezcla: Film ‘Moana’ Star Auli’i Cravalho to Play Ariel in ABC’s Live Musical Version of ‘The Little Mermaid’
By Yara Simón | 24 mins ago While some took issue with the news that Halle Bailey – aka one half of R&B duo Chloe x Halle – was cast as Ariel, who has mostly been portrayed as a red head and white woman, we were ecstatic because diversity in movies is necessary. And now it seems that that ABC has followed parent company Disney’s lead and also cast a woman of color for its live musical iteration of The Little Mermaid (titled Little Mermaid Live!). Auli’i Cravalho, who is of Hawaiian and Puerto Rican descent, will play the main role in the musical that will air this November.
Cravalho, best known for playing the title role in Moana, will be joined by some superstar talent, including Queen Latifah, who will play Ursula, and Shaggy will star as Sebastian, according to the Los Angeles Times.
While you may be thinking that there are one too many Ariels at the moment, ABC isn’t worried about competing with Disney’s live-action film. “I’m not really worried about overshadowing the other,” ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke said. “The timing is so different. Ours premieres in the fall. The movie will hit theaters long after that.”

From TheWrap: ‘Little Mermaid’ Live Musical Event Set at ABC Starring Auli’i Cravalho TCA 2019: And “there will be puppetry — yes, puppetry,” ABC President Karey Burke promises critics

“The Little Mermaid” is swimming back to ABC for a live musical event special, the network announced Monday at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.
In honor of the 30th anniversary of the original 1989 Disney movie, the production is set to air live in front of a studio audience on November 5. “Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho will play Ariel, actress and R&B artist Queen Latifah will play Ursula, and Grammy-winning musician Shaggy will play Sebastian. Additional cast will be announced at a later date.
The production was originally scheduled to air in October of 2017, but was postponed by ABC before it announced a cast. The network’s decision to bring it back comes as Disney is preparing to start production on its own live-action remake film starring Halle Bailey as Ariel.
The production will feature intricate sets and costumes, plus “puppetry — yes, puppetry,” ABC president Karey Burke said. It will be set to music from the original animated film and the Broadway stage version, originally composed by Alan Menken. Howard Ashman’s lyrics from the film will also be showcased, along with contributions from the lyricist for the Broadway adaptation, Glenn Slater.
Hamish Hamilton will direct and executive produce. “The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” is produced by Hamilton’s Done+Dusted, with other executive producers including Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor and Ian Stewart. From Indiewire: ‘Little Mermaid’ Live: Auliʻi Cravalho Becomes Disney’s Second Colorblind Casting of Ariel ABC also announced the casting of Ursula and Sebastian for its first live-action TV musical.
Disney is getting into the live TV musical game, and it’s gone colorblind for its casting. ABC President Karey Burke announced at Monday’s Television Critics Association summer press tour that Auliʻi Cravalho will star in the live musical of “The Little Mermaid” on Nov. 5 as part of the “Wonderful World of Disney.”
Cravalho – who is half native Hawaiian and also of Puerto Rican, Portuguese, Chinese, and Irish descent – has already been a Disney princess, having voiced the lead role in 2016’s “Moana.” In July, Disney had revealed Halle Bailey as the first black Ariel for the live-action theatrical remake of “The Little Mermaid.”
Joining Cravahlo as the titular mermaid are Oscar-nominated Emmy winner Queen Latifah, who will play the sea witch Ursula, and musician Shaggy, who will play Ariel’s crab pal Sebastian. More cast will be announced later.
“The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” honors the 30th anniversary of the classic Disney film. The timing is also fortuitous in that it precedes the launch of Disney+ by a week and can serve as a means to introduce the streaming service to the linear viewing public.
This version will differentiate itself from the live-action feature film by its production, according to execs. “It’s unlike anything that any other musical has done,” said Burke, saying that it includes “seamless interweaving” of the live musical performances with clips from the animated film and puppetry.
The hybrid production will also feature elaborate costumes and sets, as seen below, and be produced by Done+Dusted.
“The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!” will air Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 9 p.m. ET live on ABC.

ABC's " The Little Mermaid" live special is back on, and it has set most of its core cast with "Moana" star Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula and Shaggy as Sebastian. "The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!," featuring a mix of live action, animation and puppetry, will air Nov. 5 to mark the classic Disney animated feature's 30th anniversary.
ABC originally announced in May 2017 that it would stage a live production of the beloved underwater tale under the long-dormant "Wonderful World of Disney" banner, which was slated for Oct. 3, 2017. In August of that year, the network announced that the live event had been put on hold.
Since joining ABC last December as President of Entertainment, Karey Burke has expressed strong support for live specials. Her commitment was likely reaffirmed in May after the success of Jimmy Kimmel's live staging of two classic Norman Lear sitcoms on the network.
"The Little Mermaid" is also getting turned into a live-action Disney movie. Walt Disney Animation
Billed as a tribute to the original animated classic and its music, "The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!" will feature live musical performances by its star-studded cast interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film.
The hybrid format will combine intricate sets and costumes created for the special with music from the original animated film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage version, composed by eight-time Oscar-winner Alan Menken. Howard Ashman's film lyrics will also be showcased, with Glenn Slater, lyricist for the Broadway adaptation, as a contributor.
Cravalho, who will play the title role of Ariel, already is in the extended Disney Princesses family having voiced Moana in the hit animated movie. Queen Latifah will play the villainous sea witch Ursula; while Jamaican reggae musician Shaggy will voice the lovable red crab Sebastian and is expected to perform the film's signature song, the Oscar-winning "Under the Sea."
Queen Latifah will play Ursula.
The news of "The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!" going forward comes as Disney is gearing up for production of a live-action feature adaptation of "The Little Mermaid" for director Rob Marshall, "Hamilton"'s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Menken. Halle Bailey has been set as Ariel in the movie, Awkwafina as Ariel's seagull friend Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay as Ariel's friendly fish pal Flounder, while Melissa McCarthy has been rumored for the role of Ursula and Harry Styles for Prince Eric.

Executive producers include Done+Dusted's Hamish Hamilton, who will also direct, Katy Mullan, David Jammy, Raj Kapoor and Ian Stewart. Following her breakout role in "Moana," Cravalho performed the film's anthem, "How Far I'll Go," at the Oscars and starred in the NBC musical drama series Rise. It was just announced that she is the lead of the Brett Haley Netflix film "Sorta Like a Rock Star." She is repped by Framework Entertainment and WME.

That's awesome news! Auli'i was always my first choice to play live action Ariel and it's nice to see she does get to play the part after all, even if she wasn't chosen for the movie.
I wonder if it's possible for me to somehow see this musical. Being an Australian, I assume an American production is unlikely to be seen in person by me.

I'm very excited to see this musical. I hope in an international release on television. From Dark Horizons: TV News ABC Plans “9/11” Series & “Little Mermaid Live”
ABC’s turn at the Television Critics Association press tour today and the network made two key announcements.
First up, the network has acquired the rights to Mitchell Zuckoff’s book “Fall and Rise: The Story of 9/11” and will develop it as a limited series with plans to air it in 2021 – commemorating the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack.
The book chronicles the stories of those who were lost, saved and forever altered by the most heinous acts of terrorism on American soil. The series will be executive produced by Erwin Stoff, Richard Abate and Mitchell Zuckoff.
Next up, “Moana” voice star Auli’i Cravalho is set to play Ariel in an ABC live concert musical version of “The Little Mermaid” to air on November 5th.
Also slated to be in the production are Queen Latifah as villain Ursula and Shaggy as Sebastian. The event, which will be recorded in front of a live studio audience, will air as part of The Wonderful World of Disney franchise.

From Gizomodo: A Live-Action Little Mermaid Is Coming...No, Another One
Germain Lussier Yesterday 7:30pm
While director Rob Marshall is busy working with Lin-Manuel Miranda and others to bring The Little Mermaid to the big screen with Halle Bailey as Ariel, another live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated hit is coming to TV.
The Hollywood Reporter says Auli’i Cravalho, also known as the voice of Moana, will play Ariel in a live concert production that’ll air on ABC November 5. She’ll be joined by Queen Latifah as Ursula and Shaggy as Sebastian.
Unlike the upcoming movie, this TV version will be a hybrid performance that blends live performance on set, like a Broadway play, with clips from the original animated film. A version of this show was originally supposed to air in 2017 but was canceled and now most of the creative team is back.
This may sound like something new, but Disney has done similar events for smaller audiences at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. In productions of Beauty and the Beast, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and, yes, even The Little Mermaid, actors took the stage to perform the songs in person with a full orchestra accompanying them, as the movie played to fill in the blanks in the story. It also feels like the Disney/ABC answer to other networks bringing live musicals to TV, like Grease Live and Rent Live.
Expect more casting soon, but mark it on your calendars now: The Little Mermaid live is coming to ABC on November 5. The live-action film, which is likely to co-star Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Harry Styles as Eric, has yet to be dated.

From UrbanIslandz: Dancehall Legend Shaggy Cast As Sebastian In ‘The Little Mermaid Live’ by Claudia Gardner August 6, 2019
Shaggy will bring Sebastian character to life in ABC’s new “The Little Mermaid Live.”
Dancehall superstar Shaggy is set to play Sebastian the Crab in the live concert production of The Little Mermaid, to air on ABC later this year. The dancehall legend has been getting praises from his Jamaican compatriots including fellow artistes, Bounty Killer, and Jesse Royal are elated. The network announced yesterday that Shaggy had been cast to play Sebastian alongside Queen Latifah who has been billed as Ursula and Aulii Cravalho as Ariel. The live musical event is set for airing on November 5 as part of The Wonderful World of Disney franchise honoring the 30th anniversary of The Little Mermaid.
Shaggy broke the news via Instagram last night in two posts, penning “#TheLittleMermidLive swims to November 5 with Shaggy as Sebastian, @auliicravalho as Ariel and @queenlatifah as Ursula,” as the caption for the first post. Jamaicans immediately responded with glee, with some fans seemingly thinking he was cast for the actual film, which has sparked much controversy since it was announced that African American Halle Bailey would be playing Ariel.
“Sebastian can finally have the authentic accent now… congrats,” Shanaski Bolton said.
“Yassss! Disney gets 100 points for this! If Sebastian wasn’t Jamaican, it would have been a whole boycott!! Go tru Shaggy!!” Lurr Kerr said.
On the other hand, Okeeno Giscombe had high hopes that the use of Jamaican expletives would be featured in the production. “Wonder if dem a go allow one ‘bom@#claat’ from Sebastian this time around” he quipped.
“Finally he will be played by a real Jamaican. Congratulations. Hope they give you the job for the movie too,” Andre Timoll said.
In his second post, Shaggy uploaded nine photos of himself posing with other members who will be featured in the concert and expressed his gratitude to ABC for allowing him to perform in November. “Excited to be a part of it!! Thanx to the guys at ABC networks and the wonderful world of Disney,” he said, embellishing his caption with an image of the Jamaican flag.
Shaggy has been having loads of fun over the last several weeks, trekking across sections of the globe such as Poland, Montreal in Canada, The Bahamas.

From Variety: HOME SCENE NEWS AUGUST 6, 2019 8:04AM PT Melissa McCarthy Praises Queen Latifah Casting as Ursula in ABC’s Live ‘The Little Mermaid’ By ANGELIQUE JACKSON
The only thing better than Melissa McCarthy portraying Ursula in “The Little Mermaid”? McCarthy and Queen Latifah playing the evil sea witch.
While McCarthy is reportedly taking on the role for Disney’s live-action movie, ABC announced Monday that Latifah will star as the notorious villain in the network’s television production “The Little Mermaid Live!” The singer will appear alongside “Moana” actress Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel and Shaggy as the crab Sebastian.
At the premiere for McCarthy’s upcoming mob drama “The Kitchen,” the Oscar-nominee revealed that she’s all in for the rapper’s take on the character.
“She can do anything,” McCarthy told Variety at the TCL Chinese Theatre on Monday night. “I’ll be like (raises hands) both hands on chin watching her.”
And since both stars may soon sing “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” Variety suggested a duet. McCarthy played coy in response, saying “What do you mean? Oh, I don’t know…” with a teasing smile and shrug.
Before continuing down the red carpet, McCarthy gushed over the vocal powerhouse. “‘Ladies First’ — that’s all I’ll say. I love Queen Latifah so much, “McCarthy said, referencing Latifah’s 1989 hit. “I still have the cassette tape of ‘Ladies First.’ Cassette…does that date me?”
Angelique Jackson ✔ @angelique814 .@iamqueenlatifah - you down to duet with @melissamccarthy???
👑🎤Two queens are better than one! 🎤👑 …
Variety ✔ @variety Melissa McCarthy will definitely be tuning in for Queen Latifah's portrayal of Ursula. But an Ursula duet? "What do you meaaaan; I don't know" #TheKitchenMovie
Embedded video 7 5:14 AM - Aug 6, 2019 · Los Angeles, CA Twitter Ads info and privacy See Angelique Jackson's other Tweets ABC’s special is set to air on Nov. 5, and will feature music from the animated classic and Broadway version, both composed by Alan Menken. Meanwhile, Rob Marshall is directing the movie with McCarthy, which features Halle Bailey as Ariel.
While the ink may not be dry on her deal to play the iconic villain, McCarthy is portraying a kind of hero in “The Kitchen,” as mob wife turned boss named Kathy Brennan. The film, set in 1978 in New York’s he**’s Kitchen, is an adaptation of a DC Vertigo comic book series and tells the story of three women (Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss co-star) who take the mafia business into their own hands after their husbands go to prison. And though the role technically puts the star in the DC comic book realm, McCarthy feels like she’s played a superhero already.
“I don’t think you have to have a cape to be remarkable. I mean, I love superhero stuff and I love comics, but…I’m someone who roots for like the average person doing remarkable things,” she explained. “That’s the most powerful thing you can be.”
“The Kitchen” is in theaters on Aug. 9.

From Glamour: TV The Little Mermaid Live: Everything We Know So Far The cast of ABC's upcoming live spectacle is incredible.
By Christopher Rosa August 6, 2019
Hold on to your fins, Disney lovers: Another Little Mermaid live-action adaptation is coming.
That's right: In addition to the movie in the works, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, ABC announced yesterday, August 5, that it's moving forward with The Little Mermaid Live, which will air November 5. The Little Mermaid Live is just one of several live musicals to hit TV in recent years. (Remember Grease Live? Rent Live? Or The Sound of Music Live from 2013 starring Carrie Underwood?) Not much is known about this upcoming special, but a few details did come out yesterday after the announcement. Here's everything we know so far:
The release date: November 5, 2019.
The cast: Moana's Auli’i Cravalho will star as Ariel; Queen Latifah is set to play Ursula; and Shaggy will portray Sebastian. Other characters haven't been announced yet.
Queen Latifah commented on her casting via Instagram, writing, “Fortunately I know a little magic.” 😘 Excited to be a part of The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!"
http://instagram.com/p/B0zG-CzDogS
The format: Per Deadline, The Little Mermaid Live will be a blend of puppetry, animation, and live-action elements. The cast will perform live versions of songs from The Little Mermaid mixed in with a broadcast of the original 1989 film. About 10 live musical elements are planned, according to Hamish Hamilton, the director and executive producer of The Little Mermaid Live. Expect gorgeous sets and costumes.
Actor Auli'i Cravalho attends the 89th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood Highland Center on February 26 2017 in... Auli’i Cravalho
This will not conflict with the live-action movie version. ABC president of entertainment Karey Burke says The Little Mermaid Live is "distinctly different from the feature film."
If The Little Mermaid Live goes well, expect more live events on ABC. "If it works, I expect we will do more of them and we will work closely with the feature department about timing," Burke says, per Deadline.
We'll update this post with more information as it comes in.

ABC has revealed that Cravalho will play Disney's iconic mermaid Ariel in their live production of The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live! that's set to air on the network November 5.
The announcement of Cravalho as Ariel wasn't the only exciting bit of casting news. It was also announced that Queen Latifah has been tapped to play the evil sea witch Ursula with Mr. Boombastic himself, singer Shaggy being cast as the voice of Ariel's friend, the loveable red crab Sebastian. According to Deadline, Shaggy will most likely perform the Oscar-winning song from the movie version, Under the Sea.
