Source: www.cbr.com/why-the-little-mermaid-failing-china/Why The Little Mermaid Is Failing in China BY NARAYAN LIU PUBLISHED 11 HOURS AGO Disney's The Little Mermaid is failing in China, and many assume it's due to widespread racism, but it's a little more complicated than that.
Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is the subject of criticism and debate among moviegoers, particularly when it comes to the casting of actor Halle Bailey, a Black actor, as Princess Ariel. In fact, her casting is assumed to be the reason why the recently-released film is performing so poorly in territories like China. The truth, however, is that race plays a much smaller part than people think.
The Little Mermaid grossed just $2.63 million at the box office in China over its opening weekend, making it one of Disney's worst openings in 2023. But this didn't come as a surprise to observers since early reactions and pre-sales figures indicated as much. But why are Chinese moviegoers uninterested in this release? There are many reasons why some might conclude that there is a widespread aversion to seeing people of color on the screen, and that includes Disney's approach to marketing material.
The Little Mermaid's Chinese Poster Fiasco
Many of Disney's major releases in the past have attempted to hide or dismiss Black actors in posters and other images. When Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Force Awakens secured a release date, actor John Boyega's image was less noticeable in the film's Chinese posters, though he was fairly prominent elsewhere. It's similar to the approach Lionsgate took when 12 Years a Slave was released in 2014.
There are some who have accused Disney of repeating this blatantly racist habit for The Little Mermaid, with certain posters seemingly blue-washing Halle Bailey in order to avoid discouraging Chinese audiences. Those accusations, however, stem from the release of the film's Chinese IMAX posters, which use the exact same image as the IMAX posters in the U.S. and elsewhere. In fact, the film's other posters, where Bailey's skin color is proudly shown, have been seen used just as much.
The argument some might use is that Disney wouldn't have tried to seemingly hide actors of color in promotional material in the first place if Chinese audiences didn't have such an issue with race. That's partly true. China suffers from widespread racism, and minorities or people of color are treated abhorrently. While state media and official lines might deny it, there is clear, systemic racism. But that is a whole other conversation.
China's Major Race Issues
Any person of color who has spent time in Mainland China can likely attest to the fact that there is widespread xenophobia. Mainland China possesses a virtually homogenous population of Han Chinese people, and the Communist Party-ruled government has placed increasing effort into instilling a greater sense of nationalism in the populace. This isn't to excuse the racism that exists. But it does illustrate some of the crucial reasons as to why China struggles with inclusion, why things like blackface or brownface are not uncommon in Chinese media and why Disney would feel it necessary to hide Black actors.
It's fair to assume that racism may have played a part in the apparent failure of The Little Mermaid, but not to the extent that so many people in the West seem to believe. For proof, audiences don't need to look much further than 2018's Black Panther, which featured a predominately Black cast. The film earned $65 million upon opening and went on to gross $105 million. Even Sony's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with its $25.8 million opening weekend, topped the Chinese box office that year.
China's Filmgoing Tastes Are Changing
What has played an even bigger role in this Disney project's failure to draw in Chinese audiences is everything that happened during the height of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, catalyzing a trend that had already been taking place since 2018 in China. The entire movie industry shut down and slowly restarted in time for the centennial of the Communist Party. During this tumultuous point in time, the Party pushed for the production and distribution of propaganda films and imposed strict new regulations on media and even the consumption of certain kinds of content, all to try and create a greater sense of nationalism in the Chinese population and encourage them to reject Western media and values.
As a result, virtually all major Hollywood releases were prevented from releasing in China, regardless of whether they were given the green light by state censors. Those that did pass censorship reviews incidentally suffered from controversies relating to old interviews or statements someone related to those projects might have made in the past. In that way, Western films were rejected while the official quota for the importation of foreign films could remain unchanged. In fact, to date, the quota stands at 34.
The Root of The Little Mermaid's Failure in China
Still, efforts across the Chinese film industry have proven effective as it has become clear over the years that Chinese moviegoers are becoming increasingly disenchanted by Hollywood films, especially since more and more Chinese films of similar visual quality are being released. While they are filled with government-approved values that don't necessarily reflect the values of moviegoers, they do oftentimes tell stories that are far more relatable, which makes them more appealing to Chinese audiences than Hollywood films are nowadays.
It's all of that that has worked against The Little Mermaid, along with the vast majority of Hollywood films that have been released in China since the virtual ban was lifted. Much more so than any racism at play. All that is evident in the conversations being had on Chinese social media, including Weibo and the Maoyan ticketing service, where viewers can easily find many of the same conversations people hear with Western audiences.
There are plenty of racist comments, but for the most part, viewers don't seem to care about the fact that a Black actor is playing Ariel. Instead, they are complaining about the film's length, the odd choice to focus on realism in the design of Ariel's friends, like Sebastian and Flounder, and the lack of any original ideas. Those are all points that Western critics have brought up anyway. The only difference is that The Little Mermaid is performing better in the U.S. because it resonates more with audiences who may have grown up with the animated Disney film.
The Little Mermaid is now in theaters.

By Anthony D'Alessandro Editorial Director/Box Office Editor
May 31, 2023 1:00pm
In a rare situation for a Disney tentpole, particularly a live-action title based on a treasured classic animated musical, The Little Mermaid looks to bank more at the domestic box office ultimately than overseas, with $300M-$350M U.S./Canada to $260M abroad.
At that level, per finance sources, off a reported $250M production cost and $140M global marketing spend, The Little Mermaid could very well break-even. However, anything in the low $400M global threshold and this fish is apt to be sinking to a loss of around $20M.
“Not a huge disappointment, but a disappointment, nonetheless,” one film finance insider told Deadline, given the blockbuster streak often associated with Disney. The studio’s summer slate remains in a precarious position after it boldly world premiered two major titles in Cannes to lackluster reviews: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (49% Rotten Tomatoes) and Pixar’s Elemental (58% Rotten, $40M projected U.S. opening).
Little Mermaid‘s ebb tide at the box office is extreme when juxtaposed against the high water mark seen from the last Memorial Day Disney live action feature adaptation of a toon, Aladdin, back in 2019. That Will Smith pic cleared $1.05 billion worldwide, 66% of that gross generated abroad which also counted $53.4M from China. Little Mermaid‘s China ticket sales were non-existent with a $2.5M start. Given the quick burn of U.S. titles in the PRC, some believe that the Rob Marshall-directed musical may not even get to a double digit final gross there.
Should Little Mermaid break even, it would be a rare feat for a tentpole to do so on the back of its domestic box office. Typically a tentpole sees 60% of its global box office total (or more) coming from overseas. Typically Disney titles seeing 50/50 splits between domestic and international box office are movies such as 2018’s Christopher Robin and 2016’s Pete’s Dragon.
Again, the slowdown with Little Mermaid, despite a strong start stateside of $118.8M over the 4-day Memorial Day holiday (ahead of Aladdin‘s $116.8M) and a running total through yesterday of $130.2M, stems from the backlash the pic has received in certain offshore markets (i.e. Korea, China, France, Germany) over the casting of star Halle Bailey in the title role as well as review-bombing. Hopeful box office sources maintain that the pic’s opening in Japan, as well as buoyant results in Mexico ($8.5M), UK ($6.3M), Italy ($4.7M), Brazil ($4M) and Australia ($4M), will get The Little Mermaid to a final tally of $260M overseas.
In a break-even scenario off a $560M global box office (meaning a net profit of $71M before participations and residuals are accounted for), we’re told that Little Mermaid‘s global film revenues would amount to $547M against its combined production, global theatrical and home entertainment marketing expenses of $476M. The pic’s revenues broken down include $267M in global theatrical film rentals, $100M net in domestic pay/free TV and what Disney pays itself to put the movie on Disney+, $100M in global home entertainment (DVD, digital), and $80M in international TV and streaming.
This weekend, Little Mermaid encounters competition from Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which is expected to do $80M-$90M in U.S./Canada. However, that movie is largely a fanboy draw, and not expected to crimp Little Mermaid‘s fins. Hence, the second weekend hold for Little Mermaid looks to be around around $40M, -58%. Aladdin posted a second weekend of $44.9M, -53%, and ended its domestic run at $355.5M.

In La Sirenetta, uscito nelle sale il 24 maggio, Halle Bailey interpreta Ariel assieme a Jonah Hauer-King (Eric), Jacob Tremblay (Flounders), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian) e Awkwafina (Scuttle), mentre Melissa McCarthy interpreta Ursula e Javier Bardem re Tritone.

In Disney's live-action remake of the 1989 animated classic, "The Little Mermaid," you will get chills — if not cry — when Halle Bailey belts out "Part of Your World" as Ariel.
She ends the number by leaping out of the sea and onto a rock to stare longingly at land. Her pearlescent mermaid costume (or scales and tail, rather) shimmers in the sunlight, and her famous hair flip — in dramatic slo-mo — completes the reimagining of that indelible scene.
The costumes by Colleen Atwood and hair design by Camille Friend help conjure the warm and fuzzy nostalgia, while simultaneously creating new memories and making an impact on the next generation of Disney fans — even before the film's release. Friend recalls a parent reaching out after the trailer came out, excited for the movie.
"I just really I started crying," she says. "Because when you're doing the work, you don't think about the big picture and how it really affects people. People were like, 'My little girl saw this, and I just want you to know.' That's special."
Ahead, Friend and Atwood discuss how they brought the beloved characters to life in the live-action "The Little Mermaid."
ARIEL'S NATURAL HAIR

Bailey wanted to celebrate natural hair in her history-making turn as the first Black Ariel, telling the New York Times: "As Black women our crowns are so special to us. Our hair is important to us in every single way, so I was really grateful that I was allowed to keep that essence of me."
Friend — a veteran Disney and Marvel hair designer, who received an Oscar nomination for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" — joined the movie as the production was underway. "Halle needed somebody who was going to really figure it out and know what her hair was going to look like. So, they called me," she says. "What can we do to keep her hair natural, but get her in the Ariel look? How can we reimagine this?"

First, Friend chose Bailey's locs over a wig, but had to get creative to fulfill the need for Ariel's long hair to majestically float underwater — "because locs are dense," she says.
Concurrently, she adjusted the "red violet" hair color from the animation into captivating shades of auburn, achieved by custom-blending three colors that Helene Stahl of Extensions Plus then used to dye 30 inches of human hair.
"We intertwined and wrapped [the extensions] around [Bailey's] locs to create a different color," says Friend.
She created an Ariel wig for the visual effects team to reference for designing the CGI underwater sequences. She also had a physical trick up her sleeve for those billowing under-the-sea hair moments: Friend incorporated a "mono-filament," similar to a malleable wire base, to create structure.
"We sew the locs to be in certain places, so they move a certain way, when you want them to go this way or that way," she says. "It's movie magic."
ARIEL'S LITERAL MERMAID-CORE

The live-action Ariel's prismatic color palette, which phosphoresces as she gracefully glides through the water, pays homage to the animated version's purple clamshell bikini top and sea foam-green tail. Atwood and her team designed bust-to-tail mermaid costumes, beginning with screenings of life-like fins and scales to determine the proportion on a human body. The visual effects team then scanned the full costumes to develop the CGI for the aquatic scenes.
"I liked the idea of tails and [fins] being see-through — that you can see water through them and movements," says the four-time Oscar winner. "They weren't just a stationary extension of the body."
Ariel's bustier-style top and basque-waistline tail are both delicately-trimmed with translucent fins that resemble a gossamer-like tulle. But Atwood emphasizes no fashion inspirations were involved — just practical aesthetics.
"When you really start designing and you have to transition from skin to scales — and not look creature-creepy — it was good to have a little something, a little detail, to break it up," she explains. "The same thing with the tops: I ended up going back in and adding an edge to all of them, so they separated from the body."
Ariel and her six sisters could comprise a mermaid girl group with their coordinating but distinctive colors, fish-inspired patterns and silhouettes. For instance, Princess Indira ("Bridgerton" season two's Simone Ashley) swims in a yellow-and-brown one-shoulder crop-top and matching tail, while Karina (Kajsa Mohammar) reigns in a glittery blue criss-cross, multi-strap, cut-out situation.
"Something to make them feel like dresses," says Atwood. "But not."

"She was a little Peggy Lee, a little [animated] Ursula combo," says Atwood of the glamorous, double-dealing, voice-stealing Ursula the Sea Witch (Melissa McCarthy, having the time of her life). "I felt like she was somebody that would wear evening clothes all day long. She never really got casual."

Halle Bailey's casting as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" was met with racist backlash from some internet commenters. The movie has since opened at No. 1 in the US. Disney "The Little Mermaid" debuted this weekend and was "review-bombed" on some movie-review sites. Despite this, it became the fifth highest-grossing release on Memorial Day weekend in history, per IMDb. The film reeled in a $117.5 million in US box-office earnings.
Since Disney announced its live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid," the film has been targeted with online hate, namely racist complaints about Halle Bailey being cast as the mermaid Ariel.
But that didn't stop it from taking the top spot at the weekend box office upon its release in the US.
The movie, which arrived in theaters on May 26, has received mixed reviews from critics. But it appears many of the online audience reviews have been artificially impacted by "review-bombing" — or when people swarm online movie review sites with negative ratings in an attempt to hinder the success of a film.
Of the 34,000 ratings the film received on IMDb, over 14,000 were 1-star reviews. The flood of these reviews caused IMDb to note on its review page, which allows registered users to rate movie titles on a scale of 1 to 10, that the film had attracted "unusual voting activity."
The disclaimer on IMDb's website reads: "Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternative weighting calculation has been applied."
Currently, the film sits at a 7-star rating on IMDb. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given it a 68% score, while the audience score, composed of over 5,000 ratings, sits at 95%. The movie received an "A" rating from CinemaScore, a firm that polls moviegoers on a film's opening night.
Despite backlash and review-bombing, the film had a notable opening weekend for box office earnings: The film was the fifth highest-grossing release on Memorial Day weekend in history, per IMDb. It reeled in $117.5 million in US box-office earnings through the Memorial Day weekend. The same time last year, "Top Gun: Maverick" debuted and drew in $160.5 million in US box office sales, the highest grossing release over the holiday weekend of all time.
'The Little Mermaid" ticket sales did beat out Disney's 2019 live-action remake of "Aladdin," which grossed $116.8 million when it opened on Memorial Day.
Box offices sales are still down by nearly 25% compared to pre-pandemic sales, per Axios. But if the "Aladdin" world-wide box office earnings of over $1 billion is any indicator, "The Little Mermaid" could be expected to deliver around that number in global ticket sales.

"The Little Mermaid" makes a dazzling return to the big screen, earning a projected $118 million, ranking 5th in Memorial Day box office history. Thirty-five years after captivating audiences with the animated tale of Ariel, the flame-haired siren of the sea, "The Little Mermaid" returns to the big screen in a live-action remake that dominated the Memorial Day weekend box office. The Disney release is set to make a massive splash, projected to debut with an impressive $118 million over the four-day holiday period, with $96 million of that coming in over the three-day frame. This achievement cements its place as the fifth-highest Memorial Day opening in history.

The Little Mermaid movie revieThe Little Mermaid" makes a stunning live-action comeback, ruling the Memorial Day box office with a projected $118 million debut.w: Halle Bailey stars as Ariel in the new live-action film. The film drew in fans from multiple generations, including those who fell in love with Ariel during her original animated adventure in 1988, as well as younger audiences who have grown up watching the movie through various mediums such as DVDs, television, and streaming services.
"'The Little Mermaid' is a classic," said Tony Chambers, Disney's head of distribution. "For many people of my age, along with 'Beauty and the Beast,' it holds a special place as their favorite animated movie. It transports them back to their childhood, and this live-action remake provides the perfect opportunity for them to pass on that love to the next generation."
Directed by Rob Marshall, the live-action "Little Mermaid" showcases Halle Bailey in the titular role of Ariel, with Melissa McCarthy portraying the malevolent sea witch Ursula. The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, and Daveed Diggs. The breathtaking visuals of Ariel's underwater world required a massive amount of CGI, truly bringing the ocean home to life.
The production of "The Little Mermaid" came with a hefty price tag of $250 million, making its global success vital for financial success. Internationally, the film has already grossed an impressive $68.3 million from 51 markets.
Breaking down the domestic audience demographics, 68% of moviegoers were female, while 25% fell into the 25 to 34 age range. Children accounted for 22% of the opening weekend crowds, showcasing the film's broad appeal across different demographics.
Disney's strategy of transforming beloved animated classics into live-action adaptations has proven successful, with hits like "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Lion King" capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide. With the overwhelming success of "The Little Mermaid," it's clear that Disney will continue to tap into its vast library of animated properties for future live-action reboots.
While "The Little Mermaid" made waves at the box office, other films had mixed results. "Fast X," the tenth installment in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, saw diminishing returns domestically, with an estimated $23 million in its second weekend. However, it remains a global hit, expected to surpass $500 million in worldwide earnings, solidifying its position as one of the year's highest-grossing films.

Meanwhile, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" from Universal and Illumination continued its successful run, adding $6.3 million to its already impressive domestic earnings of $560.9 million.
Not every film fared as well. Sony and Legendary's action comedy "The Machine," the Lionsgate release "About My Father," and Gerard Butler's "Kandahar" from Open Road and Briarcliff struggled to find an audience, earning lackluster figures at the box office.
