From NBCNews: There are sound arguments for updating some classic films in some ways. The forthcoming live-action version of "The Little Mermaid," for example, features a multicultural cast, including Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle starring as Ariel. For young Black girls in particular, this a significant shift toward true representation.

From Tyla: People Are Divided On Melissa McCarthy Being Cast As Ursula In The New Little Mermaid Live-Action Movie
Kimberley Bond in Entertainment
Published 15:39, Monday 14 December 2020 GMT
Disney has unveiled a whole stack of upcoming films and TV series we can look forward to seeing next year - with the full cast of the live-action version of The Little Mermaid having now been announced.
And while many are excited to see Halle Bailey take on Ariel in the Disney classic (which will feature some new music from Alan Menken and Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda), others were less pleased to see that Melissa McCarthy had landed the role of iconic villain Ursula.
Ursula was based on a drag queen (Credit: Walt Disney Pictures)
The backlash stems from Ursula's original design from the 1989 animated feature, with the sea witch inspired by American actor and drag queen Divine.
This has led to many fans heading to Twitter to say that Ursula should not be played by a heterosexual, cis-gendered woman like Melissa.
"Melissa McCarthy as Ursula when the world is full of drag queens?" said one fan.
Another said: "Something about Melissa McCarthy being casted for the role of Ursula don't sit right with me."
"Melissa McCarthy?? Nooooo, Ursula must be played by a drag queen!" a third vented.
"While I love Melissa McCarthy, an Ursula in drag would have been *chefs kiss*" a fourth pointed out.
While a fifth said: "I'd rather Ursula was a drag queen or woman of colour, there's so many better choices for her role."
However, not everyone was disappointed, with others saying the actor "will do great" in the role.
The original 1989 classic saw Pat Carroll voice the witchy octopus, with Whoopi Goldberg voicing the character in Descendants 2.
Meanwhile, Sherie Rene Scott and Queen Latifah have played the popular villain on stage.
Despite the backlash, Melissa, 50, has "fallen in love" with playing Ursula.
"It's such a juicy, great part. I can't wait," she told Yahoo Movies.
"I've kind of fallen in love with her. I have seen The Little Mermaid like nine billion times, strangely, so to get to play Ursula was like a dream come true."

From EliteDaily: 'The Little Mermaid': Live-Action Cast, Release Date, Trailer, & More Info
2020 Billboard Women In Music/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images
By Ani Bundel Dec. 15, 2020
Disney has discovered a goldmine in creating live-action remakes of its older animated films. As CGI continues to develop and improve, things that were once only the province of cartoons can now be created with and centered around real-life actors. But even so, recreating a live-action The Little Mermaid, in which most of the action takes place underwater, is a daunting prospect. It's a good thing Disney has set an A-list cast for its The Little Mermaid live-action remake to help propel this very ambitious project along.
Up until now, these live-action films have mostly concerned themselves with cartoons filled with people or animals hanging out on land. Some of the characters have been individual challenges, with inanimate objects turning animate, like Cogsworth and Lumiere Beauty and the Beast. But most have been able to be created with a combination of prosthetics and computer work, like Angelina Jolie's titular character in Maleficent.
But water is a whole other kettle of fish. Pixar worked for years on Finding Nemo to get computer-animated visuals of being under the sea to look realistic. To create this believable-looking underwater world with live actors working in it is one of the most exciting challenges the live-action remakes have taken on thus far. Fans cannot wait to see what Disney creates. Until then, here's what's known about the project:
'The Little Mermaid' Trailer
Disney
With filming set to begin in January of 2021, there's no footage as of yet for The Little Mermaid live-action remake. But Disney revealed the film's new logo during the yearly investor presentation on Dec. 10, 2020. It's very reminiscent of the original logo from the 1989 film, but without any animated characters, just the grotto where Ariel and Eric fall in love.
'The Little Mermaid' Live-Action Cast
As filming begins at the top of 2021, the cast for the new film has been announced. It is a who's who of actors.
Halle Bailey of Chloe x Halle was already officially announced as Ariel back in 2019, and fans are excited as ever to see her take on the role.
Ariel's best friends are animated creatures from under the sea: Sebastian the Lobster, Flounder the Fish, and Scuttle the Seagull. A-list actors will take on all three. Sebastian, whose show-stopping "Under the Sea" number won Oscars, will be played by Daveed Diggs (Hamilton). Scuttle will be played by Awkwafina, who is also starring in another Disney film, Marvel's Shang-Chi & The Ten Rings, in 2021. And Jacob Tremblay, who at 14 is already a critically acclaimed actor for his turn in Room, will play the young Flounder.
As for the men in Ariel's life, Prince Eric, the all-important love interest, will be played by Jonah Hauer-King, who most recently starred in the PBS World War II epic World on Fire. Ariel's father, King Triton, will be played by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem.
Melissa McCarthy had been rumored to play the evil underseas witch Ursula. Disney has now confirmed the rumor is accurate, and McCarthy will be taking on the iconic voice-stealing witch in the new adaptation.
'The Little Mermaid' Plot Details

Disney has played it close to the vest in regard to how much the new live-action will adhere to the original. But there are signs the new version could veer away from being a frame-for-frame reshoot a la Beauty and the Beast.
For example, the film's director is Rob Marshall, who recently did the Mary Poppins sequel. It followed the 1964 original to the letter in some places, while in others it veered wildly into new territory.
What is known is that the music will change. The composer from the original 1989 film, Alan Menken, is back for the new version. But he's reworking the original soundtrack with the help of self-professed Little Mermaid superfan Lin-Manuel Miranda. They will also team up to compose at least one new song for the soundtrack. That is traditional for these live-action remakes. (I mean, how else would the movie qualify for a Best Original Song Oscar nomination?)
'The Little Mermaid' Release Date
Disney
There is no release date announced for The Little Mermaid, though most expect it to arrive sometime in 2022.

From Awn: All-Star Cast Revealed for Live-Action / CGI ‘The Little Mermaid’
Halle Bailey is joined by Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, and Awkwafina in the new adaptation of the beloved Disney animated feature film musical classic, set to begin filming in 2021.
By Laurén Alexa | Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 3:01pm
It’s official! The live-action / CGI adaptation of The Little Mermaid has gained an all-star, deep-sea cast. While we have known Halle Bailey (Grown-ish) will play the role of Ariel, a long-held fan casting has now been confirmed: Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, The Happytime Murders) will take on the role of Ursula. The casting directors are absolutely killing it. Bailey can actually sing, which is a major upgrade from the auto-tuned fiasco that was Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast. McCarthy is an equally genius choice, an actress that can be both kind or terribly malicious, and also has some serious singing chops.
Ariel’s CG buddies Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle have also been confirmed as Jacob Tremblay (Room, Doctor Sleep), Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer), and Awkwafina (Nora from Queens, Crazy Rich Asians) respectively. The role of Prince Eric, which was originally meant for Harry Styles before he turned it down, has gone to Jonah Hauer-King (Little Women, A Dog’s Way Home). King Triton, Ariel’s strict yet loving aquatic father will be played by Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Dune).
It is rumored the film will stray from the original by avoiding a frame-for-frame reshoot and changing up the iconic Alan Menken score. Executive producer Lin Manuel Miranda will most likely be developing a new Oscar-worthy song for the film.
Filming begins in 2021, but a release date has not yet been announced.

From Hellogiggles: How Awkwafina Got Over Being "Intimidated" By Starring in The Little Mermaid Remake She's set to play Scuttle in the live-action reboot of the classic Disney film.
Mackenzie Dunn Dec 23, 2020 @ 2:30 pm
Awkwafina has had a very busy last few years. After rising to fame in 2012 for writing and performing original rap compilations on YouTube, the 32-year-old landed roles in major movies like Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's 8; in 2019, she became the first performer of Asian descent to take home a Golden Globe for lead actress in a film for The Farewell. These days, in addition to serving as executive producer and star of the Comedy Central show Awkwafina is Nora From Queens, she's readying for parts in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. When we speak on the phone in mid-December, the actress' role as eccentric seagull Scuttle in the Disney film has just officially been announced, and she tells me that while it was “really cool” to reimagine a character she grew up loving, she was stunned to have scored the job.
"When I got the news, I kind of couldn’t believe it, because Scuttle was a favorite character of mine. He always stood out to me," says Awkwafina. "And then I met [director] Rob Marshall, who directed some of my favorite moves ever like Chicago, and I definitely was a little intimidated."
For the film (which will start production in early 2021), the star is also working with actor and composer Lin Manuel Miranda, who wrote the lyrics for the remake's new music alongside legendary Disney composer Alan Menken. And although Awkwafina may have initially been intimidated by the project, she says that both Miranda and Marshall “provided a really comfortable and nice environment to just do it." Considering that Menken recently teased that one of the brand-new songs in the movie is just for Scuttle, that's good news for fans.
Whether it's taking on a role in the The Little Mermaid or exploring other equally exciting career paths, Awkwafina’s motto seems to be “just do it.” Over the course of her career, she's made some huge moves, going from book publicist to Youtube rapper to comedian to serious actress—and she recognizes how how a willingness to take risks can pay off. “It’s never too late to start something. You can transform yourself whenever you want—you just have to be confident in your decision and go for it,” she says.
Awkwafina admits, though, that taking the initial leap to do what she really loved was hard. In a 2018 Twitter post, she opened up about the creation of her performance alter-ego and the feelings of failure she experienced along the way, writing, "Awkwafina was a dream I was chasing, and in some ways, I am still chasing her. But we need to take risks. We need to prove them wrong, simply by not giving up."
Speaking now, she tells me that with anything new and different, “being scared to fail plays a big part of it, and we also always have to get over the biggest hurdle which is ourselves and how we will be perceived...but I think if you can get over that then you can try anything and you can do anything.”
Recently, the actress tried something else totally new for her: cooking. In partnership with Chase Sapphire, Awkwafina and top chef Brooke Williamson filmed a socially-distanced virtual holiday cookalong to show off some of their favorite dishes, with viewers following along in the process. You can watch their culinary journey on Youtube, but Awkwafina says you shouldn't be fooled by her skills in the video—in reality, she “doesn’t cook often” and filming the video was "probably the most cooking I've ever done."
Still, putting herself out there for the project was absolutely worth it. “I guess it all goes back to trying something new," she notes. "I was able to meet someone new and learn something new in this kind of 'new normal.'"
"Brooke Williamson told me that when it comes to cooking you can pretty much start whenever you want," she adds. "A lot of people are intimated by cooking like I am, but you don’t need to be. Even for her, she's still learning. We’re always all still learning, even at the top of our game.”
