From Screenrant: Little Mermaid: What Other Movies & TV Show You've Seen The Live-Action Cast In Disney's live-action The Littler Mermaid starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy is underway, but where else have you seen the cast?
BY MATTHEW WILKINSON 23 HOURS AGO
Disney's Little Mermaid is one of the most beloved animated movies of all time, and it is going to be one of the latest Disney classics to be given the live-action treatment. Much like The Lion King, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin have before, Little Mermaid will be brought to life in a whole new way.
Obviously, there is a lot of pressure on the cast not to disappoint, with the re-telling of this beloved story. But Disney has put together an incredible cast, which was officially announced during its latest Investors Day. So far, seven actors have been confirmed for the movie, as well the fact the music will be created by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. But where will people know the cast from?
7 Jonah Hauer-King (World On Fire)
Jonah Hauer-King will be taking on the major role of the Disney Prince, Eric. The character is one of the most important within the movie, and one that stands out massively, fighting for what he believes in, showing great passion and romance with Ariel.
This will be the biggest role of Jonah's career to date, with the promising young actor being best-known for his role on the BBC show, World On Fire, which is a war drama. As well as that, he has appeared in A Dog's Way Home alongside Bryce Dallas Howard.
6 Awkwafina (Jumanji: The Next Level)
Awkwafina is quickly making a name for herself within the world of television and movies after her career as a rapper and online personality. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for her role in The Farewell.
She also appeared in the popular movie, Jumanji: The Next Level, playing Ming Fleetfoot, and in The Little Mermaid, she will be taking on the role of Scuttle. This is going to be a change from the animated version, where Scuttle was a male, but with her comedic ability, there's no doubt she will be a hit in this role.
5 Daveed Diggs (Hamilton)
There's no doubt about where people best know Daveed Diggs from, which is the popular musical, Hamilton. This show is one of the greatest musicals of all time, and Daveed takes up the roles of both Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson throughout the show, bringing a lot of excitement and energy.
His incredible rapping throughout the musical makes him a perfect casting for the character of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid. He will no doubt be bringing that energy to the role, which was one of the highlights of the animated movie, and his strong relationship with Lin-Manuel Miranda should help make this character shine.
4 Jacob Trembley (Room)
Jacob Trembley is a young actor who is quickly making a big name for himself, having been part of some major movie and television projects. He was part of the 2015 movie adaptation Room, where he wowed with his performance, and he has continued being involved in movies of this nature, such as Doctor Sleep and Predator.
However, Jacob will be joining the cast of something a little more family-friendly with The Little Mermaid. He's going to be taking on the role of Flounder in this movie, which is a great role as Ariel's sidekick and best friend.
3 Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men)
Javier Bardem was a great casting decision by Disney for the role of King Triton. He's someone who has had an incredible career and will no doubt be great in this role, bringing an authoritative tone, while also being able to be warm as well.
He is best known for being involved in No Country For Old Men, which saw him win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He has also been involved in the James Bond franchise, playing Raoul Silva in Skyfall, while also having worked with Disney previously in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
2 Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids)
Melissa McCarthy is one of best comedic actresses around right now, and someone who is best known for working in comedy movies such as Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, and Identity Thief. She's certainly got a lot of charisma, and that is something that will work well for her role in The Little Mermaid.
However, instead of being the character that audiences love, she will actually be the villain as she will be playing Ursula. The Sea Witch is certainly a scary and dominant villain, but she's also got a lot of personality, which is something that suits Melissa.
1 Halle Bailey (Grown-Ish)
Halle Bailey is going to be taking on the most important role of all, as she plays Ariel. She is obviously the lead character, becoming the popular Disney princess, and it is no doubt going to be a real breakout moment for her career.
So far, Halle is actually best known for being one half of the popular duo, Chloe x Halle, who are a popular R&B duo who are actually signed to Beyonce's label. However, she does have acting experience as well, having been in a variety of television shows, with the biggest role coming in the show Grown-Ish.

From ScreenRant: Disney’s Live-Action Little Mermaid Casts Undoing Star As A New Character The cast of Disney's live-action Little Mermaid gets a little bigger, as The Undoing star Noma Dumezweni is set to play a brand new character.
BY RACHEL LABONTE 27 MINUTES AGO
Noma Dumezweni cast in The Little Mermaid
Disney's upcoming live-action Little Mermaid casts The Undoing star Noma Dumezweni in a brand new role. Ever since 2010's Alice in Wonderland proved to be a smash hit, Disney has set out to remake a good portion of their beloved animated catalogue in live-action form. Recent years have seen additions like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and, most recently Mulan. Next up is The Little Mermaid, an adaptation of the 1989 classic that centers on mermaid princess Ariel as she dreams of sprouting legs and venturing up on land.
The Little Mermaid has been in development for some time now, with production beginning (and being put on hold amid the COVID-19 pandemic) just last year. Halle Bailey (Grown-ish) will play Ariel, while Melissa McCarthy will fill in the role of her nemesis Ursula. Additional cast members include Javier Bardem (King Triton), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric), and Awkwafina (Scuttle). Up until now, the casting for The Little Mermaid has stuck close to the main characters of the original animated film, but now the remake is taking steps to deviate from the source material.
According to Deadline, Noma Dumezweni has joined the cast of The Little Mermaid. Her character is yet to be revealed, but it's noted that she will play someone who wasn't in the animated movie. Over the past year, Dumezweni has earned raves for her roles in well-received limited series like Hulu's Normal People and HBO's The Undoing, the latter of which has been stirring up awards buzz. Before all this, Dumezweni stepped into the international spotlight when she was cast as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
A common criticism lobbed at Disney's live-action remakes is that they often hew too closely to the source material. The most blatant example of this is 2019's The Lion King; in contrast, Mulan took so many liberties that some die hard fans of the original were turned off. It remains to be seen where The Little Mermaid will fall on this spectrum, but the addition of Dumezweni's mystery character suggests some changes will be made. Past live-action remakes have added a character or two to help pad the story, and The Little Mermaid is evidently no exception.
This means there's plenty of speculation ahead as people try to work out who Dumezweni will play. A potential option is Ariel's mother, who, like most Disney princess moms, is dead by the time The Little Mermaid begins. Beyond that, Dumezweni could also play a person on land. Perhaps she is a member of Prince Eric's court? Only time will tell, though the possibilities feel endless. Hopefully more details will be revealed soon.

From TheDisInsider: Noma Dumezweni Joins Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’
Skyler Shuler on January 5, 2021
A question I have been getting all year has finally been answered. Who is playing Ariel’s mother in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid?
According to Deadline, Noma Dumezweni, who is best known for playing Hermione on Broadway, has joined the cast. The trade could not confirm who she is playing but as far as I have been told, she will indeed play Athena, Ariel’s mother and Queen of Atlantica.
Halle Bailey leads the film as Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, also set to star is Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Sea Witch Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Emily Coates in unconfirmed role.
Directed by Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), the film will feature music from the 1989 animated classic as well as four brand-new songs. Menken has teased that those songs will consist of new ones for both King Triton (Bardem) and Scuttle (Awkwafina), we also hear Prince Eric will get his own song as well, and that another will feature a duo between both Ariel and Eric.
Production on the project begins this month. Disney has not officially set a release date for the film, but it will not going to be Disney+ like Pinocchio and Peter Pand and Wendy before it.

From Playbill: Harry Potter Stage Star Noma Dumezweni Joins Live-Action The Little Mermaid BY LOGAN CULWELL-BLOCK JAN 05, 2021 The remake of the 1989 Disney animated movie will feature new songs co-written by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child star Noma Dumezweni has joined the cast of Disney's upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, based on the 1989 animated film. As reported by Deadline, Dumezweni will play a newly created role not present in the original.
Theatre fans will remember Dumezweni for creating the role of Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, playing the role in the work's original companies both on Broadway and in London's West End. Her performance earned Dumezweni her second Olivier Award and a subsequent Tony Award nomination. The Little Mermaid would be Dumezweni's second Disney film, after playing Miss Penny Farthing in 2018's Mary Poppins Returns.
Dumezweni joins a previously-reported principal cast including Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Barden as King Triton, with Hamilton Tony winner Daveed Diggs slated to play Sebastian. Directed by Chicago and Into the Woods film director Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid will feature songs from the original film (penned by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman) along with new songs co-written by Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The Disney property also received a Broadway stage adaptation in 2008, starring Sierra Boggess as Ariel, Sherie Rene Scott as Ursula, and Norm Lewis as King Triton. The original songs created for that production, written by Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater, are not expected to be included in the upcoming film.

From Hypable: By Pamela Gocobachi | 4:41 pm EST, January 5, 2021 Disney’s live-action ‘Little Mermaid’ adds Noma Dumezweni
Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid has found its newest cast member in Noma Dumezweni.
According to Deadline, actress Noma Dumezweni has officially joined the cast of Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
Unfortunately, those interested in finding out who the Cursed Child vet will be playing in the movie musical will have to sit tight. Disney has yet to reveal character details for Dumezweni’s role.
One thing we do know is that she’ll be playing an all new character that was not featured in the 1989 animated classic. With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to find out how the new character in question will fit into the fold of Ariel’s big adventure when the live-action adaptation swims on to the silver screen.
Dumezweni is the latest actress to join the cast of the live-action adaptation, which boasts some pretty big names.
Leading the cast is Chloe x Halle artist Halle Bailey, who will take on the role of Ariel herself. Meanwhile, Melissa McCarthy will play the evil sea witch, Urusual, while Jacier Bardem will play Ariel’s father, King Triton.
Others who’ve signed on to star in the Disney film include Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, and Jacob Tremblay, who will lend their voices to the roles of Sebastian the crab, Skuttle the seagull, and Flounder the guppy.
Finally, Jonah Hauer-King will be tasked with taking on the role of Prince Eric to Bailey’s Ariel.
Behind the camera, The Little Mermaid is being directed by Rob Marshall and featuring music by original animated film composer Alan Menken and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see the live-action adaptation hit theaters.

From HollywoodLife: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW JANUARY 6, 2021 9:15PM EST Daveed Diggs Raves Over Halle Bailey InLive-Action ‘Little Mermaid’: I’ve ‘NeverHeard’ A Voice Like Hers
Jade Boren and Russ Weakland Daveed Diggs told HollywoodLife why Halle Bailey was the ‘perfect choice’ to play Ariel, and what it has been like voicing Sebastian for ‘The Little Mermaid’ live adaptation film.
Hamilton star Daveed Diggs is trading Broadway for the big screen in the upcoming live-action movie for The Little Mermaid, and can’t wait for Disney fans to hear the lovely voice of its leading star: Halle Bailey. The 20-year-old singer is already part of the famous singing duo Chloe x Halle, but Daveed EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife how he thinks fans will react after hearing her voice on the big screen.
“I just think that Halle is just the perfect choice for Ariel…everyone is going to fall in love with her immediately,” Daveed, who will be voicing Sebastian the crab alongside Halle, told us. He continued, “She is so, so good. Her voice is not of this world. The things she can do vocally is something — I have never heard anything like it.” Halle is a Grammy-nominated artist, after all!
Daveed was even able to tease some details about Disney’s live adaptation of The Little Mermaid animation, which came out in 1989. “So, I think there are the new songs that are super fun,” the 38-year-old actor and singer revealed.
Daveed promised that the movie overall is “going to be really good,” although the Tony-winner admitted that he hasn’t “seen any of it” yet. Production on the film was originally supposed to begin in April of 2020 in London, which the COVID-19 pandemic delayed. However, in an Instagram Live stream in Nov. 2020, Halle did reveal that she’d be returning to film soon.
Daveed has already done voice work for the movie, though, telling us that “it was incredible and an incredible thing to work on.” He did admit that the large-ensemble film is “difficult” and even poked fun at himself by joking, “I am basically a voice on it, so I got to be there without all the heavy lifting.”
Taking on the role of Sebastian was also sentimental for the Broadway star. “I remember lining up to see Little Mermaid on opening night when it opened at the Grand Light Theater,” Daveed said, later adding, “I mean obviously I am a Disney fan, I grew up loving The Little Mermaid. It actually is still something that doesn’t feel real. The fact that I get to work on these things now, I think people will really like it. It was a really joyous experience and a great group of people and a great and wonderful cast. Everyone worked so hard on it.”
As Daveed waits for The Little Mermaid to come out and the pandemic to end, he has been entertaining himself by supporting small regional theaters. “So I am subscribed to the new season of the San Francisco Playhouse, which is a place that I worked at a lot growing up who are now doing these virtual performances and taping shows and releasing them for an amount of time,” Daveed shared. He has also done some singing, too: he remade the ’90s hit song “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers in partnership with Nature Valley, to celebrate the brand’s accomplishment of restoring 10,000 miles of national park trails in conjunction with the National Park Foundation. You can watch Daveed’s fun cover of the classic song above!
