Chloe X Halle
Ramona Rosales—AUGUST
By Elaine Welteroth February 17, 2021 6:55 AM EST
Working at Teen Vogue, one of my biggest joys was meeting young stars before their prime. Few were as sensational or instantly lovable as Chloe and Halle Bailey. The self-taught R&B stars and multi-talented sisters—whose voices literally stopped traffic when they broke into song for me at a Los Angeles restaurant in 2015—earned a coveted early co-sign from Queen Bey, who discovered their breathtaking renditions of her ballads on YouTube. Now, they’re garnering Grammy buzz for their critically praised 2020 album Ungodly Hour, which showcases a sound all their own, with influences ranging from Beyoncé to Billie Holiday, but for the TikTok generation. Their careers now span film and television—Halle will play a Disney princess in her role as Ariel in the upcoming adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and both have long been fan favorites on Freeform’s Grown-ish. Through it all, their steadfast sisterhood remains strong. Watching the evolution of two young, self-possessed Black girls blossom into full-blown women before our eyes is a gift to all who bear witness. They are Black Girl Magic personified—and this is just the beginning.

From Whatsonstage: Theatre News Alan Menken on live-action The Little Mermaid: 'It's all a blend of Menken-Miranda' The film is coming soon and currently shooting AuthorAlex WoodLocationsLondon19 February 2021
Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda © Dan Wooller
Alan Menken has spilled all on the new episode on the eleven podcast.
The multi-award-winning composer, who has worked on some legendary films and stage shows in his time, has provided an update on his plethora of projects.
Firstly discussing his new sequel to hit Disney film Enchanted, Menken said: "The sequel to Enchanted was basically started during the pandemic and now ready to start filming." Amy Adams will return for the musical feature.
He also discussed working with Lin-Manuel Miranda to bring The Little Mermaid to the live-action big screen: "There is some rapping in it and I really can't take much credit for the rap aspect of it. Yeah, there's some rapping in it, there's some very Menken songs, there's some very Miranda songs. But it's all the blend of Menken-Miranda.
"I love him, I love working with him. I'm glad we had the opportunity to do that and he's also a producer on the movie but Lin juggles a lot of things, as I do, so we will have occasional contact. Right now it's in the hands of the amazing Rob Marshall and as we speak they are in London right now filming."
Menken had a lot of love for Halle Bailey, who will be taking on the lead role of Ariel: "Oh my gosh, she is adorable and so talented. I met Halle at the recording sessions… I did have to be educated in terms of what she and her sister do together, which is incredible. She is an amazing talent, a beautiful girl, and I got to meet her family."
Joining Bailey are Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, with Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
Finally, the Beauty and the Beast composer teased his work on a stage version of Night at the Museum saying: "I completed a musical of Night at the Museum which is now in discussion with directors, and when the pandemic ends we are ready to go."
Menken was talking on the new episode of eleven, streaming now at elevenpodcast.com.

From Screenrant: Disney's Little Mermaid Live-Action Movie Casts Jessica Alexander
The star of Get Even joins Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, and Javier Bardem in the cast of Disney's upcoming live-action Little Mermaid film.
By Alissa Evans Published
Jessica Alexander has reportedly hopped aboard Disney's upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid film. Alexander, a young British actress best known for her role as high schooler, Olivia Hayes, in Netflix's revenge thriller series, Get Even, joins Halle Bailey (Austin & Ally, grown-ish), Melissa McCarthy, and Javier Bardem in the cast. Disney alum, Rob Marshall, (Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns) is set to direct the pic, and David Magee, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter with credits including Life of Pi and Mary Poppins Returns, will pen the script.
Deadline reports that Alexander is the latest addition to The Little Mermaid's growing cast, but her part in the film remains unknown. Her cast members' roles have been confirmed, however, with Bailey slated to play the iconic fiery-haired mermaid, Bardem set to portray Ariel's father, King Triton, and McCarthy cast as the villainous half-woman, half-octopus, Ursula. The film will feature classic tunes from the 1989 animated Disney flick as well as new songs from the original film's composer, Alan Menken, with lyrics by Hamilton creator and Oscar-nominated songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will also serve as co-producer.
While Get Even was Alexander's breakout role, The Little Mermaid allows her the opportunity to break into the mainstream film world. It's not her only chance to do so, however. She's had a busy year, with starring roles in Ruth Paxton's forthcoming psychological thriller film, A Banquet, and Kelsey Egan's Glasshouse, a sci-fi thriller film that's currently in post-production. More news regarding Alexander's role in The Little Mermaid as well as other plot and casting details are likely on the horizon.

From Comicbook: Disney’s Live-Action Little Mermaid Makes Major Change to Ursula
By Nicole Drum - March 1, 2021 09:31 pm EST
Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid is making a big change to the iconic villain of the story, Ursula. Tucked into Deadline's report that Jessica Alexander has joined the cast of the upcoming adaptation in an undisclosed role was a description of Melissa McCarthy's Ursula as being Ariel's (Halle Bailey) aunt. Fans of the animated The Little Mermaid will recall that in that film, Ursula was a sea witch determined to sabotage Ariel in order to replace her father King Triton as ruler over the seas.
What's interesting about this shift in Ursula's relationship to Ariel is that it's something that was considered for the animated classic. Going all the way back to Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale, the then-unnamed sea witch character isn't especially prominent in the story, something the animated adaptation shifted that a bit, giving her an expanded role and her iconic name. Part of that was the idea that there was a fractured familiar relationship between King Triton and Ursula, though it was a concept that was ultimately abandoned. However, there are still hints in the animated film that there is a history between Ursula and Triton, with Ursual even referring to having lived in the palace at some time in the past.
If the live-action The Little Mermaid does restore the family relationship between Ariel and Ursula, it will be interesting to see how that changes the villain/protagonist dynamic.
Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid will star Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, and Awkwafina as Scuttle. Disney has not yet announced a release date for the film.
Are you looking forward to Disney's live-action The Little Mermaid? Do you think Ariel and Ursual should be related? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
