Simone Ashley as Indira in The Little Mermaid
Summary
Simone Ashley, known for her role in Bridgerton, also appears in Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The 2023 version of The Little Mermaid expands on the original story while capturing the same feeling as the animated movie. Ashley plays Ariel's older sister, Indira, and although her role is small, she stood out on-screen and fans were excited to see her in the blockbuster film.
Simone Ashley is most known for starring Kate Sharma in Bridgerton, but the actress also appeared in Disney's 2023 live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The movie is an adaptation of the 1989 animated film of the same name in which a young mermaid named Ariel wants to become human. After falling in love with a human prince named Eric, Ariel makes a deal with a sea witch named Ursula and becomes a human for three days. The 2023 version of The Little Mermaid captures the same feeling of the animated movie while expanding on the lore of Hans Christian Andersen's original story.
With a longer run time than the animated version and the impressive Halle Bailey as Ariel, The Little Mermaid leans into the idea of mermaids acting as sirens with their voices. The movie also gives Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) more of a backstory that makes his connection to Ariel stronger. From its leads to background actors, The Little Mermaid boasts a diverse cast. Though her role is smaller, Ashley's part in The Little Mermaid cast has a strong connection to Ariel.
Simone Ashley Played Indira In The Little Mermaid
A still from The Little Mermaid
In The Little Mermaid, Ariel has six sisters, and each sister originates from a different sea. Simone Ashley plays Ariel's older sister Indira, and she appears in a handful of scenes whenever the sisters are present. Indira is first seen in The Little Mermaid when the mermaids gather to meet King Triton (Javier Bardem) for the Coral Moon, and she is seen again with her sisters when they work together to clean up a shipwreck and later search to find Ariel. Even though her role in The Little Mermaid is small, Ashley expressed how grateful she was to cameo in the film on Instagram, calling the movie "so, so special."
Because of her Bridgerton fame, the actress is easily recognizable in the movie. This recognition, along with the fact the actress has a captivating presence in the movie despite her brief screen time, makes Indira stand out. Seeing Simone Ashley on the big screen in such a major blockbuster film and promoting The Little Mermaid at its premiere proved to be an exciting experience for her fans. On social media, they shared how it felt to see Ashley portray Indira, with some joking that the actress is too famous for such a small cameo in the movie.

Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma in Bridgerton season 2
In Bridgerton, Kate is the love interest of Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey). After a tumultuous second season, fans can expect Bridgerton season 3 to take it easier on Kate. In an interview with ELLE, Ashley shared that fans will see "a softer side of" Kate because she is "quite content with her husband." Outside of her relationship with Anthony, Kate is most known for being a dedicated older sister to Edwina (Charithra Chandran).
Even though Indira and Kate have different lives, the two roles have a lot in common. Both Indira and Kate have showstopping style and beauty that draws viewers' attention. Most importantly, the two characters are family-driven and protective older sisters. Simone Ashley earning widespread praise for her roles in Bridgerton and The Little Mermaid shows how strong her screen presence is in both large and small roles.

Little Mermaid 2023 Ariel sisters
SUMMARY The live-action remake of The Little Mermaid made changes to Ariel's sisters, expanding their roles and changing their names. Each of Ariel's sisters has a distinct personality and role in the underwater world, representing different seas and having unique characteristics. While the animated versions of Ariel's sisters were less developed, the live-action remake gives them more significance and individuality in the story.
The live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid made a couple of changes to the animated classic, among them Ariel’s sisters, who even though appear in the movie, are very different from their animated versions. The list of Disney’s live-action remakes continues to grow, and now part of it is The Little Mermaid. Director Rob Marshall and writer David Magee took the 1989 animated classic (based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen) and brought it to life with Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
The Little Mermaid’s live-action remake follows the same story as the animated version, with mermaid Ariel being fascinated by the human world and making a dangerous deal with sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) in order to become human. The Little Mermaid brought the most notable characters from the animated movie to life, along with some minor characters that are an essential part of Ariel’s life. Falling into the latter category are Ariel’s sisters, who briefly appear in the 1989 adaptation and have even less screen time in the 2023 live-action version, but the new role they were given within the world of The Little Mermaid is a lot bigger and more significant than in the animated classic. Here are Ariel’s six sisters and their roles in the underwater world.
6 Mala
The Little Mermaid Mala
The names of Ariel’s sisters in the live-action version of The Little Mermaid were changed, along with their role in the underwater world’s royalty, thus expanding their roles even if slightly. Princess Mala (Karolina Conchet) represents Princess Attina from the animated movie, Triton’s firstborn daughter. Mala is the ruler of the Chaine Sea, and her color palette is hot pink, orange, and yellow. Mala is described as the most fearless out of all of Triton’s daughters (though that might be debatable after everything Ariel went through), and she’s committed to protecting the reefs at any cost. As such, she hates shipwrecks, as they pollute the ocean.
Mala is a natural and strong leader, and she’s also known for her sense of humor. Mala used to send messages on seaweed scrolls to humans before King Triton forbade any interactions with humans, and following her mother’s dead, she started hating humans and the damage they do to the sea. As Triton’s eldest daughter, Attina is the first in line to take over Atlantica, so King Triton has prepared her well for that. As a result, Attina is the less impulsive of the sisters, and she constantly worries about not letting her father down.
5 Indira
The Little Mermaid Indira
Princess Indira (played by Simone Ashley) is inspired by Princess Alana from the animated version, and she serves as the ruler of the Brinedive Sea. Indira is a yellow-orange mermaid, with these colors representing the sunny and warm waters of the Brinedive Sea. Indira is described as the most generous of all the daughters of the sea, and she’s also empathetic, generous, and virtuous – however, she despised humans just as much as her father did, until Ariel’s marriage to Eric changed the ideas they had of humans.
Princess Alana, on the other hand, isn’t exactly a leader, and she’s more focused on looking beautiful than on the politics of the Seven Seas. However, although she might seem shallow and self-obsessed, Alana is kind, soft-spoken, and intelligent.
4 Caspia
The Little Mermaid Caspia
Princess Caspia (Nathalie Sorrell) is based on Princess Adella from the original animated movie. Princess Caspia is the ruler of the Apneic Sea and she has blonde-pink hair, with her color palette being orange, yellow, and different shades of blue. Princess Caspia is described as the most selfless of all of Ariel’s sisters, always putting her people first, which makes her a kind and compassionate leader. However, Princess Caspia is said to be a bit of a recluse and only travels for meetings. Just like Mala, she’s very protective of the corals and comes up with various laws in order to ensure that they can be safe in her kingdom. Princess Adella isn’t as selfless as Princess Caspia, and she’s all about beauty, making her quite vain. Princess Adella cares more about boys than her family, and is always desperate to talk to them.
3 Tamika
The Little Mermaid Tamika
Princess Tamika (Sienna King) is based on Princess Aquata from the animated movie. Princess Tamika is the ruler of the Fracus Sea, and she has one of the most detailed and vibrant designs, wearing blue, orange, red, and yellow, with details on her arms, neck, and forehead, representing the vibrant fish and coral found in her sea. Princess Tamika is described as the toughest of the daughters of the sea, as well as the most tactical one, said to “rule with an iron fin”. However, Princess Tamika is said to rule with grace and admiral strength, and she will fight sharks to keep her people and more safe. Princess Aquata isn’t as tough as Princess Tamika, and she especially hates when her sisters borrow her things without her permission, and she’s willing to do whatever she needs to get them back.
2 Karina
The Little Mermaid Karina
Princess Karina (Kajsa Mohammar) is based on Princess Arista from the animated movie. Princess Karina is the ruler of the Saithe Sea (the Dark Sea), which is mostly coated with ice, which is why she has white hair and wears white, black, and different shades of blue. Princess Karina is described as the most decisive, intuitive, and reclusive of Ariel’s sisters, and developed a fear of humans after her mother died (though she got over it after Ariel’s marriage to Princess Eric). Princess Arista tends to “borrow” things from her oldest sisters, especially Aquata, and she has a zest for adventure just like Ariel.
1 Perla
The Little Mermaid Perla
Princess Perla (Lorena Andrea) is based on Princess Andrina from the 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid, and she’s the ruler of the Piton Sea. Perla is described as the most charismatic of all of King Triton’s daughters (yes, even more than Ariel), and she’s all about warmth and kindness, so much so that it’s said that she once charmed and stopped a group of orcas from attacking a colony of penguins. Princess Perla is a red mermaid with some white and blue details on her tail, most likely a representation of the temperate and deep waters she rules over.
As a ruler, Perla is said to do so with good temperament and is very careful with the choices she makes, putting decisions to a vote in order to keep the peace. Just like King Triton and most of her sisters, she started hating humans after the death of her mother. In the animated movie and its expanded media, Andrina is the least developed of Ariel’s sisters, so not much is known about her other than she’s portrayed as a sort of “class clown”, bringing a lot of sass and sarcasm.

Ariel's sisters were included in the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, but they are very different from their animated versions.
A blended image showcases Ariel and her six sisters in the 2023 live action Disney remake of The Little Mermaid
Summary
Ariel has six older sisters who are responsible for different parts of the sea and assist King Triton in his duties. Each sister has unique characteristics and roles, such as Mala being fearless and committed to protecting the reefs, and Caspia being selfless and putting her people first. The live-action remake provides more details about Ariel's sisters through merchandise, showcasing their individual personalities and storylines.

7 Ariel Has Six Older Sisters The Seven Daughters Represent The Seven Seas
Though Ariel's mother is absent from both the original Disney animated movie and the modern live-action remake, she still has a large family under the sea. Ariel is the youngest of Triton's seven daughters. In the original animated movie, her sisters are Attina, Alana, Aquata, Arista, Adella, and Andrina. There is clearly a theme with all of their names beginning with "A," but that changes in the live-action movie. It's also not the only change for The Little Mermaid.
Ariel's sisters might have a brief role in the live-action movie, but the roles they play in the sea are significant. Each of Ariel's sisters is responsible for a specific part of the sea, reporting back to their father on the state of their corner of the ocean. They help to clean up shipwrecks and pollution caused by humans as well. Their brief time on screen shows that they all share in King Triton's responsibilities for the sea.
Because the roles of Ariel's sisters are limited in the live-action The Little Mermaid, much of what the audience learns about them individually is from Disney's merchandise. The sisters feature in lines of dolls and books, and there is a lot of information about them in that merchandise.
6 Mala Played By Karolina Conchet
