Despite concerns The Little Mermaid might be a rare flop for Disney, business has picked up for the movie in recent weeks and it's now on track to finish with a box office haul that makes a sequel likely.

Despite the seemingly inevitable racist backlash aimed at The Little Mermaid when it was announced, all signs pointed to the movie being one of the year's biggest hits.
Earlier this month, it was reported that this might be a live-action Disney adaptation which results in a rare loss for the studio.
Despite a solid opening, lower-than-expected numbers in countries like China and South Korea led to speculation Ariel's live-action debut could be the first and last time we head under the sea with her.
With a rumoured production cost of $250 million and a massive $140 million global marketing spend, an eventual global haul of anywhere in the low $400 million range all but guarantees a $20 million loss.
However, while the movie was once heading that way, things are now looking up for it.
The Little Mermaid grossed $8.7 million in North America during its fifth weekend of release, bringing its domestic cume to $270.2 million.
Internationally, the movie made $9.4 million to bring its total to $229.1 million.
As a result, it's hit $499.3 million globally and will cross $500 million today.
Current estimates point to a $580 million - $600 million worldwide haul, meaning the movie is going to turn a decent, albeit fairly small, profit which opens the door to Disney at least considering a sequel revolving around Ariel and company.
Despite some review bombing, both Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore tell a very different story from what you might be seeing in other corners of the internet.
On the former, it has a 94% Audience Score from verified ticket buyers, while CinemaScore (which polls moviegoers as they leave theaters) awarded it an A grade.
The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
The movie is currently playing in theaters.

Disney fans around the world were delighted when the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid hit theaters, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel. Now, anticipation is growing as rumors swirl about the possibility of a live-action version of The Little Mermaid 2. While nothing is confirmed/greenlit, and the box office really didnt help Disney’s case on making a sequel we take a look at how it can happen.
The original The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, released as a direct-to-video sequel in 2000, introduced audiences to Ariel and Prince Eric’s daughter, Melody. The film explored Melody’s fascination with the ocean and her desire to discover her mermaid heritage. Given Disney’s recent successes with live-action adaptations of animated classics, it’s not surprising that fans are eager to see a live-action take on this enchanting tale.
So, how can Disney realistically make The Little Mermaid 2 a reality?
The Little Mermaid on Disney+ The release of a live-action adaptation of a beloved animated classic can generate significant buzz and engagement among Disney fans. If the live-action version of The Little Mermaid performs well in terms of viewership and generates positive reviews, it can indicate a strong audience interest in the franchise. Disney can use data analytics and audience feedback from the release of the live-action adaptation to assess the level of interest and demand for a sequel. The financial success of the live-action adaptation, both in terms of streaming revenue and even merchandise sales, can provide Disney with the financial resources and confidence needed to invest in the production of a sequel. the release of a live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” on Disney+ can serve as a strategic move to assess and build interest in a potential sequel. If the live-action adaptation proves successful and generates enthusiasm among viewers, it could increase the likelihood of Disney moving forward with a sequel to further capitalize on the franchise.
Has Disney discussed the idea of a sequel? While Disney has yet to greenlight a sequel, the cast and crew have discussed interest in doing one. Jonah Hauer-King discussed his interest alongside Bailey when talking about the animated sequel, “I would be up for doing it. I kind of would like to also be a merman, so, we can also somehow evolve that storyline, to go with her.” Back in 2021, a production grid was making the rounds, which means that Disney had a sequel in the cards, keep in mind this was long before The Little Mermaid would hit theaters, over a year later.
Director Rob Marshall also kept the idea open for further projects under the sea saying, “I know there have been the prequels and sequels to the animated film – like, the straight-to-video kind of things, you know? It’s a classic story that has a lot of characters and a lot of interesting stories. I do think it’s right for certain things. But you have to see how a movie plays, and how it does… I think there’s always opportunity to find stories within stories. That’s always a wonderful thing.”
In conclusion I had heard that Disney was keen on making a sequel; However, more recently, I spoke to someone close to those who make these kind of decisions and they say Disney is no rush to develop a sequel and hope fans enjoy the project when it hits Disney+ and through various forms of merchandise. The source also cited, if Disney plans on developing a sequel, do not expect it to take inspiration from the animated sequel.
For now, Disney fans can keep their fingers crossed and continue to enjoy the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid, which hits Disney+ on September 6, while imagining the possibilities of a live-action The Little Mermaid 2. Disney has a proven track record of bringing beloved stories to life, so it’s safe to say that if they decide to venture under the sea once more, it will be a spectacle worth waiting for.

Source: screenrant.com/the-little-mermaid-2-animated-sequel-remake-different/The Little Mermaid 2 Can’t Remake The Animated Sequel (Unless Disney Waits 9 More Years) BY ALEENA MALIK PUBLISHED 17 HOURS AGO There is much speculation about a Little Mermaid live-action sequel, but if it ends up happening the movie can't remake the animated follow-up.
The little mermaid live action remake ariel
SUMMARY The success of the 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid opens up the possibility of a sequel, providing Halle Bailey with another opportunity to shine as Ariel. The director of the first film stated that Little Mermaid sequels are possible, as the story has many interesting characters and potential storylines to explore. While adapting The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea could give the less popular sequel a second chance, it would make more sense to hold its premise for a third live-action movie and explore a different story for The Little Mermaid 2.
The 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid generated so much buzz that it's only natural there is speculation about a sequel, but if it ends up coming to fruition, the movie can't remake the animated follow-up. Although it received mixed results at the box office, the 2023 Little Mermaid is still considered to be one of Disney's best live-action remakes, and it saw much success when released on streaming. After Halle Bailey proved she had the singing and acting skills to be the perfect Ariel, it makes sense for her to have another opportunity to shine and for her portrayal to be explored further.
While there has not been any official confirmation regarding a live-action Little Mermaid 2, the first film's director did provide a hopeful comment. Before the release of the 2023 remake, Rob Marshall said Little Mermaid sequels are possible, explaining that it's a "classic story that has a lot of characters and a lot of interesting stories... I think there's always opportunities to find stories within stories." If a sequel does move forward, though, it wouldn't make sense for them to explore the story presented in the animated Little Mermaid sequel, as this would significantly delay a release timeline.
Disney Has To Wait Several Years If The Little Mermaid 2 Adapts Return To The Sea
Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid
A second live-action adaptation following the story of The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea would make for a fascinating movie, but it would require a wait of several years for it to make sense. The 2000 animated sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea takes place 12 years later and showcases the life of Ariel and Eric's daughter, Melody. The child follows in her mother's footsteps by being determined to go beyond what she knows. In her case, her family lives on land, and she is desperate to discover the secrets of the ocean.
While the 1988 original ranks high among all of Disney's animated features, its sequel is one of the studio's less popular films. Therefore, having the latter inspire the story for the second live-action Little Mermaid movie could allow for it to have a second chance. However, the need to wait enough years for Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King to look old enough to take on these mature roles is not ideal. It'd make more sense for The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea's premise to be held for a third live-action Little Mermaid movie and for a different story to serve as the plot of The Little Mermaid 2.
The Little Mermaid's Ending Sets Up A Better Sequel Than Return To The Sea
Halle Bailey as Ariel is looking through a telescope in The Little Mermaid.
The 2023 Little Mermaid remake ending sees Ariel and Eric getting ready to embark on a new adventure together and explore uncharted waters on a ship. This sets up an even better sequel than The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, as viewers did not get to experience Ariel and Eric's dynamic much in the first movie. Their new life together presents exciting opportunities for The Little Mermaid 2, which could focus more on Ariel and Eric's adventures and relationship. This would then also perfectly segue into a third Little Mermaid movie that introduces Melody, as it would feel like a natural progression of the couple's relationship.

Source: insidethemagic.net/2024/01/disney-committing-another-live-action-sequel-ab1/ Confirmed: Disney Producing Multiple Live-Action Sequels Posted on January 5, 2024 by Andrew Boardwine

The Walt Disney Company is committed to a controversial film style, which many fans have expressed backlash toward.
Last year, Disney released a live-action film in The Little Mermaid (2023), which did a solid $569.9 million at the box office. The movie served as the 21st live-action adaptation for the company and the 10th since the year 2018.

What Disney has seen with live-action remakes, honestly, is a mixed bag. The company has seen box office success with many, led by The Lion King (2019), which brought in an impressive $1.66 billion globally. In addition, it has to be noted that many live-action films– including Mulan (2020) and Dumbo (2019)– left much to be desired at the box office. Still, Disney has committed to the film style, with multiple projects announced and others being produced.
In a recent interview with Variety, Emma Stone confirmed that Cruella 2 was “a work in progress.”
“Hopefully sooner, rather than later,” she said, speaking of the sequel. “There’s a work-in-progress kind of thing going on. Yeah, yeah. We’ll see… She’s a blast, so we’ll see.”
While Disney hasn’t confirmed the project, it would make sense for the film to get a sequel. Cruella (2021) didn’t bring in massive numbers like The Lion King, but it was released in 2021 when movie theaters were still struggling. As a result of that, Disney treated the film as a hit and reportedly greenlit a sequel. Until now, though, we hadn’t heard any other confirmations about the sequel.
Cruella 2 isn’t the only live-action adaptation in the works.
Disney Live-Action Projects Being Developed
Disney confirmed last year that a live-action Moana would be produced. Dwayne Johnson shared that he would be returning to his role as Maui, but it was later revealed that the company would be finding another actress to play the role of Moana in the upcoming film. In addition, speculation has come forward that Disney will produce a sequel to The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey. Though this hasn’t been confirmed, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this come to fruition.
Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) is confirmed to be released this year. The Lion King prequel will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024.
In addition, Disney’s Snow White (2025), which was originally set to be released this spring, will now be released in the spring of 2025. The reason for the delay hasn’t been confirmed by Disney, but multiple reports indicate it is because of the backlash the film received over changes that veered from the original story.
Other Disney live-action films that are reportedly on the docket include Lilo & Stitch, Bambi, The Aristocats, Hercules, Robin Hood, and an untitled Maleficent film.
