Lin-Manuel Miranda continues to speak with the press regarding his hit 2021 films Encanto and Tick Tick Boom! and while doing so, he is revealing a lot of fun tidbits on Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
Miranda was a guest on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast and he revealed that one of Halle Bailey’s new songs will take place when she is on land in her human form.
“Rob found a creative way to hear from Ariel, even though she is sans voice for a little while. We wrote some music for her time on land. She experiences a lot of firsts, as someone with legs for the first time. We got to lean into all of that musically.”
Some additional tidbits from the interview include how their is a possible rap number from Sebastian, who is voiced by Miranda’s Hamilton co-star Daveed Diggs. If true, I wonder if this will be a part of ”Under The Sea.” Will Smith’s Genie in 2019’s Aladdin had a little rap number for ”Friend Like Me,” a piece that was not in the 1992 animated classic.
Directed by Rob Marshall (Into The Woods), The Little Mermaid will feature the original music by Alan Menken (Tangled and 1989’s The Little Mermaid) in addition to four brand new songs co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Encanto). The cast also includes Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) as Ursula, and Javier Bardem (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) as King Triton. Also set to star is Emily Coates, Jessica Alexander, Jude Akuwudike, Noma Dumezweni, Russell Balogh, and Adrian Christopher.
Released in 1989, Disney’s animated classic centered on a young mermaid named Ariel, who is captivated by the world upon the surface. When she falls in love with a human prince, she makes a deal with a villainous sea witch to become human, herself, and earn his love before the agreed time runs out.

ACTOR and filmmaker Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that there will be new original songs for the live-action remake of Disney’s Little Mermaid.
The 42-year-old, who is collaborating with music composer Alan Menken, 72, disclosed during a conversation on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast.
“We wrote three or four original tunes, replacing none of the ones you like,“ he said. This includes Under the Sea and Part of Your World.
Miranda also revealed that Halle Bailey’s Ariel will sing in the second half when she loses her tail and becomes a human.
Bailey, who is a part of sister duo Chloe x Halle plays the role of Ariel, completed filming in September. The film also stars Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake sails into theaters on May 26, 2023, and there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding the live-action adaptation of the 1989 animated film of the same name.
The film is starred by Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy, with Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina in voice roles produced by Rob Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Miranda will also co-write new songs for the remake. “We wrote three or four tunes, original, replacing none of the ones you like. All of those are in,” the lyricist said during an appearance on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast.
Adding, “there is no bigger ‘Little Mermaid’ fan than me, and the songs that I love that are in this movie are in this movie! They’re all in. But we found a couple of opportunities for some other music, and I can’t wait to see it. I’m as in the dark as anyone else, honestly.”
According to Miranda, although Ariel is voiceless in parts of the film, Marshall came up with ideas on making the musical aspect extra special. “I will tell you that [director] Rob [Marshall] found a really creative way to hear from Ariel even though she is sans voice for a little while, and we wrote some music in her time on land that was really exciting,” Miranda said. “Because, you know, she gets to experience a lot of firsts as someone with legs for the first time, so we got to lean into all of that musically, which was exciting.”
Miranda is celebrating another milestone. Encanto is Disneyland parade’s latest addition. As we previously reported an Encanto’s Disneyland attraction is in the talks thanks to the multi-hyphenate star. The actor, singer-songwriter, playwright, and film director already suggested that Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek have the film’s magical house inside the theme park.
Although it is unknown if Chapek, a.k.a our unbottled genie, will grant Miranda’s wishes, he has referred to Encanto as “the company’s new animated franchise” —which technically means that more things are coming. Among those things is the inclusion of the animated film’s characters in the park’s upcoming night-bright Main Street Electrical Parade.

Halle Bailey once again proves why she deserves to sit on Beyoncé’s list of iconic Black women on the “Break My Soul” x “Vogue” remix. Case in point: She’s taking the reprise of “Part of Your World” (the iconic one where Ariel is on a rock framed by waves) up an octave in the upcoming Bailey-starring live-action Little Mermaid film. The news broke in her Variety profile, partly because you can tell director Rob Marshall has been desperate to talk about it. “It’s the most chilling, and the most thrilling, film moment because it crystallizes not just her incredible vocal ability but the emotional passion she has in singing it,” said Marshall of the performance.
To go along with a voice of her magnitude, there will also be new songs, written by the original Little Mermaid composer, Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Menken’s previous composing partner, Howard Ashman, died in 1991. Variety reports that the choice to add new music was due to Bailey’s “singing chops,” but Miranda is but one “O” away from EGOT. Whatever it takes — we just want to be part of Halle Bailey’s world. The Little Mermaid is out May 26, 2023.

Dempsey Pillot September 9, 2022 1 min read
Just in from Disney’s D23 live-action panel: When The Little Mermaid hits theaters next Summer, it will have not one, not two, but FOUR brand new songs in it. All 4 come courtesy of both Alan Menken, who composed the original film, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
That’s not all. After (literal) years of speculation, thanks to the first look shown exclusively to those in attendance, we now know for sure that Halle Bailey will also sport red hair, just as Ariel did in the original animated film.
Skyler Shuler @skylershuler OH MY GOD! This movie looks jaw dropping!!!!! #TheLittleMermaid #D23Expo We are watching all of “Part of Your World”! Bailey look amazing and yes she has the red hair! 1:37 AM · Sep 10, 2022 1.3K 354 About Post Author

Alan Menken mentioned who sings each of the new songs in the latest episode of the " For Scores" podcast and Scuttle's song is still in the movie, Sebastian also sings in it. He also said the score is 99% complete. Source: www.ivoox.com/alan-menken-disenchanted-audios-mp3_rf_97265349_1.htmlI wrote four new songs with Lin-Manuel Miranda: a new song for Ariel, a song for Scuttle and Sebastian, a song for Prince Eric, and a song for King Triton. I'm sure there'll be some adjustments made here and there and I hope all the songs stick, but what's there is so beautiful.
