THE BIG PICTURE Disney Junior's Ariel is a new animated series centered around a young mermaid princess and her fun-filled adventures under the sea. The series embraces Caribbean-inspired elements like fashion, music, and food, showcasing multicultural diversity in a fantastical underwater world. With familiar characters like King Triton and Ursula, along with new friends, Disney Junior's Ariel promises to bring a fresh take on The Little Mermaid story.
Little Mermaid fans’ heads up, the franchise is expanding with a new animated musical series Disney Junior’s Ariel, the studio has announced. The series is aimed at preschoolers and takes its inspiration from the world of The Little Mermaid. The studio also unveiled an adorable trailer showcasing this bright beautiful world under the sea, to mark the announcement. The trailer shows us a very young Ariel, who is the life of the Atlantica, has a shimmery tail and is as curious as the Ariel we know. We also see her aunt Ursula, who has a magic camp, and it is all things glittery and shiny. In the upcoming series, Ariel will be surrounded by her friends Sebastian and Flounder but also make new ones while taking us all on a new adventure.
What’s ‘Disney Junior’s Ariel’ About?
The upcoming animated musical is set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica. We follow young mermaid princess Ariel, who embarks on fun-filled, action-packed mermaid adventures with her friends. The multicultural diversity of the Caribbean is at the center of this series through elements like fashion, music, food, festivals, language, and folklore. Keeping in line with the themes of the franchise, the series will see Ariel coming into her own while learning to discover and appreciate the world around her and using her voice to inspire others.
Fan favorite characters will be seen in Disney Junior’s Ariel including Ariel’s father, King Triton, and Ursula. Along with Sebastian Flounder, Ariel has two new best friends, mer-children Lucia and Fernie, along with lots of other adorable sea creatures. The series’ voice cast stars Mykal-Michelle Harris as Ariel, along with Taye Diggs and Amber Riley as King Triton and Ursula, respectively. The series is executive produced by Happily Ever After’s Lynne Southerland.
The animated series seems to be the continuation of Disney reviving its classic fairytales for a new generation of audiences. Last year’s Rob Marshall directed The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey was much loved by the fans for a similar approach and went on to become the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2023 as well as the seventh-highest-grossing amongst Disney's live-action adaptations.
Currently, Disney Junior’s Ariel has no release date but is expected to premiere this Summer. 2023's The Little Mermaid is also streaming now on Disney+. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates and check out the new trailer below:

The first teaser trailer for Disney Junior's Ariel offers The Little Mermaid fans a glimpse at what's to come in the series, though some fans are already upset about a change that's been made to Ursula. News By JoshWilding - Mar 29, 2024 04:03 PM EST Filed Under: Disney
The decision to cast a non-white actor as The Little Mermaid's Ariel resulted in the usual racist backlash online, though singer and actress Halle Bailey managed to prove the haters wrong (even if the movie itself didn't make as big an impact at the box office as expected).
Since then, Disney Branded Television has greenlit a new animated series titled Disney Junior's Ariel. While not a direct prequel to the live-action movie, it's clearly heavily inspired by that and the original 1989 classic.
The first teaser has been released today and while Ariel's appearance has upset the usual suspects, it's the fact classic Disney villain Ursula is being portrayed in a heroic light which has annoyed many Disney fans.
This may be a show for young children, but this feels like a strange creative decision on the show's part.
Still, given the target audience, we'd advise against overthinking this one and we're sure a lot of little boys and girls will have a great time with this series.
Set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica, the series follows Ariel as she embarks on fun-filled, action-packed mermaid adventures with her friends.
Driven by a deep and unending curiosity about the world around her, Ariel discovers land treasures, like a big floppy hat, squeaky rubber ducky, and whisk, that she collects and keeps safe in her crystal cavern.
Sometimes, Ariel uses the treasures to help solve problems.
With each discovery, Ariel is filled with joy, and her mermaid tail, which changes colors depending on her emotions, lights up and shimmers.
Full of charm, big ideas and a powerful voice, Disney Junior's Ariel is coming into her own, learning how to discover and appreciate the world around her and use her voice to inspire others.
Mykal-Michelle Harris takes on the title role, along with Taye Diggs and Amber Riley as King Triton and Ursula.
Disney Junior's Ariel is executive produced by Lynne Southerland (Mulan II). Norma P. Sepulveda (Elena of Avalor) and Keith Wagner (TrollsTopia) serve as story editors, while Ezra Edmond (Draw Me a Story) produces, Kuni Tomita Bowen (Dora the Explorer) is supervising director, and Chrystin Garland (Solar Opposites) is art director.
Dr. Patricia Saunders, a professor of English and hemispheric Caribbean studies, has been tapped as a cultural consultant, the show should live up to its promise to explore the multicultural diversity of the Caribbean through music, food, festivals, fashion, language and folklore.

by JEN MCGUIRE 13 hours ago
One thing we know for certain: we will never get tired of learning more about Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Ever since she was first introduced in the 1989 Disney animated classic, singing her little heart out and trying to meet the prince of her dreams while evil (also fabulous) Sea Witch Ursula steals her voice and makes a mess of things, we’ve been hooked. And now we’re finally going to get a look at Ariel as a real little mermaid. Because Disney Junior has a new series called Ariel coming out soon, inspired by Halle Bailey’s role as the Disney princess in last year’s remake.
In the wake of the massively popular live-action remake of The Little Mermaid starring Bailey, Disney Junior has created an animated musical preschool series. In a trailer for the new series, Ariel is already showing signs of being a super curious child, looking to get into all sorts of adventures with her pals. We meet two new mer-pals in Disney Junior’s Ariel, Lucia and Fernie, but also familiar faces like her forever friend Flounder and that well-intentioned, bossy crab Sebastian. We also get a little more interaction between King Triton (voiced by Taye Diggs) and Ursula (voiced by Glee’s Amber Riley), so with any luck we’ll find out why they fight so much.
Even better, the series is full of Caribbean-inspired music, food, festivals, and folklore.
The trailer shows Ariel (voiced by Mykal-Michelle Harris of Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home) heading off an undersea adventure as Sebastian, predictably, clutches his head and laments, “Ariel, where are you?” This does tell us that perhaps Sebastian should have been less surprised by Ariel’s adventurous nature as a grown mermaid. Ariel swims her way to a group of luminous jelly fish, shows off her shimmering tail to her friends in Atlantica, and get ready for this... calls Ursula “Tantie Ursula,” a loving title for aunt used in Caribbean cultures, and visits her at, get this, “Ursula’s Magic Camp” where the sea witch appears to welcome children and is friendly and nice? Wow, plot twist.
All of the creatures of Atlantica are encouraged to celebrate their differences in Ariel, which should make this series a more kid-friendly watch than the darker live-action version of The Little Mermaid with all the voice stealing, teen angst, and menacing eels Flotsam and Jetsam acting all sneaky and slithery in the background.
Ariel premieres on Disney Junior this summer.

Source: www.parents.com/disney-juniors-ariel-8620945NEWS Exclusive First Look at the Teaser for 'Disney Junior's Ariel' Everyone's favorite little mermaid is back with all new adventures under the sea.
By Lynnette Nicholas
We are all familiar with Disney’s The Little Mermaid, the classic Walt Disney Pictures film that debuted in 1989. It has warmed the hearts of millions of fans for decades.
Recently, a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid (2023) introduced a new generation to the classic starring Halle Bailey as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Eric. While there was some initial controversy over the new adaptation casting a Black female actress with dreadlocks, overall the film was still just as appealing to fans young and old.
Now, Disney Junior is set to debut a new animated series for younger audiences called Disney Junior's Ariel. Ariel is as curious as ever, collecting her knick-knacks to keep in her crystal cavern. She also uses them to solve problems with her friends. Except in this series, Ariel's mermaid tail changes colors depending on her emotions.
Parents has an exclusive first look at the teaser for Disney Junior’s Ariel, and parents and kids are sure to enjoy this new addition to the franchise. This teaser, by the way, is being released on International Mermaid Day (March 29). Take a look.
The show features a multiethnic and multicultural leading and supporting cast. The characters are voiced by Mykal-Michelle Harris (Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home) as Ariel and Taye Diggs (Rent) and Amber Riley (Glee) as King Triton and Ursula.
Additionally, Ariel’s best merfriends Flounder (Gracen Newton), Lucia (Elizabeth Phoenix Caro), and Fernie (Cruz Flateau) are there to accompany her as she makes new discoveries, overcomes obstacles, and learns valuable lessons.
Celebrating Caribbean culture, showcasing musical talents, and centering themes that encourage early learners to have a growth mindset, this new animated series will empower young children and encourage them to take positive risks when learning new things.
Parents recently spoke with the series’ Executive Producer Lynne Southerland who has produced children's and teens’ shows and movies such as Mulan II, Bebe’s Kids, Monster High, Enchantimals, Happily Ever After: Fairytales For Every Child. We got the inside scoop on what kids and parents can expect from the forthcoming animated series.
“The world is a wondrous and wonderful place worth exploring, and we've got maybe one of the best adventurers ever in Ariel to go do that with," Southerland says. "With Ariel, we have this beloved character that movie storytelling embraces. And, with this children’s animated series, we get to open up her fantastical world, but in an authentic Caribbean-oriented space.”
The new series certainly leans into that mission. In the new series, Ursula is “Tauntie Ursula,” described as a kinder, gentler version of the villain. But she and the merpeople of Atlantica have diverse ethnicities and complexions and showcase a vast spectrum of different cultures. Ariel’s merfriends have Nubian knots in their hair, ethnic hair jewelry, flowers, and ornate ponytail ball hair accessories.
Southerland says the creative and production teams were very deliberate about keeping the casting and series authentic.
“If Atlantica is really in the Caribbean, we wanted to pull back the curtain and find all the ways that we could be inspired by that culture, which is full of multicultural influences. We had consultants and professors to consult on cultural storytelling as well as with the music,” she explains.
Parents and kids will be delighted to learn that the new series is a musical. In each episode, there is at least one song as well as various musical elements. Additionally, every episode is inspired by the “foods, flora, music and dressing styles” of the Caribbean, and this too, impacted their voice casting.
“It was natural to cast an ethnically and culturally diverse talent," Southerland says. "Our characters are inspired by different racial backgrounds, and we wanted the actors to reflect that, even if they're not seen.”
Preschool-age children are very perceptive and notice the smallest details. And, details matter, especially when it comes to deliberate casting and television writing.
“A diverse writer's room, that brings different perspectives into the stories and how those characters are articulated is very important," Southerland tells Parents. "I think when people watch our show, it'll be clear through the voices that the characters are played by [all types of people], Black people, Latinos, and that'll be obvious when you hear the voices coming through the animated characters. But, diverse casting is important, because we sit in who we are, the world we've grown up in, and it emanates from us. So yes, that's what an actor who is of the same ethnicity as the character can bring to it. It's like adding sparkle onto a voice.”
This animated series for young audiences teaches kids to have respect for everyone and to embrace life’s unique adventures.
“We explore generosity in a huge way in the show. The kids [merfriends] put themselves forward to help the other kids [merfriends] that they interact with.”
Disney Junior's Ariel is definitely for all children. The beloved, empathetic, and adventurous spirit of Ariel still shines supreme in each episode. Southerland says that was a very important part of the show for her.
“I wanted to make sure that Ariel and her essence feels powerful and self-possessed, even at 8 years old. The series is an exploration of self-expression," Southerland explains. "Ariel’s growing into herself. She knows certain things about herself like she has a great voice. She's learning how to use that voice to make friends, help friends in situations, speak up, and apologize if she makes a mistake. But, also being willing to take risks, and being fearless enough to go on adventures and help her friends around her.”
Get ready to dive under the sea—Disney Junior's Ariel debuts this summer.

MARCH 29, 2024 11:02 AM
In celebration of International Mermaid Day (it’s a thing!), Disney Junior has released the first official teaser for Ariel, its upcoming series based on The Little Mermaid — and it features an iconic Disney villain like you’ve never seen her before.
Ursula, typically presented as a fabulously menacing sea witch, is now (gasp!) a mentor to young Ariel. The teaser includes a shot of Ariel and her friends taking part in Ursula’s “magic camp,” where she will presumably school them in witchcraft. Watching Ariel greet her as “Tante Ursula!” with a big smile on her face will surely throw longtime fans of the characters for a loop.
Ariel and Ursula’s familial connection is nothing new, though their history is a bit murky. “Fathoms Below,” the opening song in 1989’s The Little Mermaid, originally contained a verse that established Ursula as King Triton’s sister, but the song was ultimately cut down for time. It wasn’t until The Little Mermaid came to Broadway in 2007 that Ursula was formally acknowledged as Ariel’s aunt, a connection that was also present in the 2023 live-action film. Still, Ursula has always been presented a capital-V villain… until now.
“Set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica, the series follows young mermaid princess Ariel as she embarks on fun-filled, action-packed mermaid adventures with her friends,” reads Disney Junior’s official synopsis. “It features fan-favorite characters, including King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder, as well as exciting new additions like Ariel’s two best friends, mer-children Lucia and Fernie, and lots of other adorable sea creatures.”
Ariel’s voice cast includes Mykal-Michelle Harris (Raven’s Home) as the titular mermaid, Taye Diggs (All American) as King Triton and Amber Riley (Glee) as Ursula.
Ariel premieres this summer on Disney Junior. Hit PLAY on the video above for your first look, then drop a comment with your thoughts on Ursula’s good-girl makeover below.

Disney Junior Ariel A new teaser trailer has been released for Ariel.
Coming to Disney Junior in Summer 2024, Ariel is a new animated series for children that reintroduces Ariel and her underwater friends and family. The series is notably based specifically on the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which featured Halle Bailey playing Ariel. In the new teaser, a young Ariel can be seen attending a "magic camp" organized by Ursula. Typically depicted as a very villainous character, this Ursula is oddly presented as a lovable aunt, with the mermaid excitingly greeting the sea witch by saying, "Tante Ursula!" The new trailer can be viewed below.
The series, per Disney Junior's official description, “is an animated musical series for preschoolers inspired by the beloved story of The Little Mermaid. It follows 8-year-old mermaid princess Ariel as she and her friends embark on fun-filled, action-packed underwater adventures throughout their Caribbean-inspired fairytale kingdom of Atlantica and beyond. It brings me so much joy to be able to introduce our new Disney Junior version of Ariel to preschoolers everywhere,” Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis said in a statement when the series was announced in 2023.
Disney Junior's senior VP of development, series and strategy, Alyssa Sapire, added, “As we were developing Disney Junior’s Ariel, we knew that we wanted to create an atmosphere that was vibrant and magical and showcased our young Ariel’s imagination, which, like our preschool audience watching at home, is as big as the sea."
Ariel Gets a New TV Series There has previously been a television show made for the franchise. An animated version that was linked to the previous Disney films ran in the early 1990s. After the original animated movie, two sequels were made including 2000's The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and 2008's The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning. The live-action remake was released in 2023.
Ariel will debut on Disney Junior in Summer 2024.
