Comments are appreciated. I hope you enjoy the story.
Fueling an anger born from worry, Eric steered the ship toward its target, which loomed ahead on the rough sea. He worried that Ariel, the woman he had met only two days ago yet realized he loved, would be killed if he did nothing. The monstrous witch exclaimed, “So much for true love!” with terrible glee, ready to kill Ariel. She never accomplished it. Her wicked eyes widened in disbelief. Her face paled as she saw the ship’s sharp prow aimed at her, moving closer and closer… As the witch fell forward against the ship, sinking it again, Eric dove under the waves. The water as it had been moments before would have likely drowned him, but it turned suddenly to a dead calm. His head emerged and turned from side to side: voluminous grey clouds hung on the horizon in every direction. He scanned the floor below hoping to find Ariel, but there was no sign of her anywhere. If he could not find her, Eric hoped that at least she was okay. Sighting land, he made for it, assuring himself that Ariel would do the same. He realized then that she was a mermaid, and was in no grave danger out here. With that in mind, his worry eased slightly, though he would feel much better as soon as he saw her smile brightly again.
Ariel watched Ursula grin as she aimed the trident at her. The little mermaid raised her arms out in front of her face reflexively, waiting for the bolt that never came. Instead, she felt a tremendous force as volumes of water fell on her. She was pushed sideways by the impact. Dazed, Ariel was completely still for a moment. As the ocean subsided, she moved swiftly upward until her head broke the surface. She saw something splashing as it swam away from her in the distance. She realized quickly that the thing was indeed a person. She couldn’t remember being happier than knowing Eric was alive. She watched him intently as he swam toward shore, until he reached it, and then followed.
Eric exhausted from swimming and loss of adrenaline, rolled over on his back and fell asleep. He had rather uncomfortable dreams not knowing whether Ariel was alive or dead. She was still a stranger to him. He had only learned her name on the second day of three that they had spent together, and already he dreaded the possibility of losing her forever, of not being able to know her better.
Ariel never looked more beautiful to him than when he saw her in the morning, snoozing beside him on the sand. Had she watched over him while he slept? He had never known a stranger to be so caring. No, she was not a stranger. She had saved his life before. She had carried him then to this shore. Eric realized finally that Ariel was the one. Just then, he heard her stir. Her sleepy eyes brightened upon seeing him, and she smiled sweetly. That smile, the smile he had been waiting for. Eric returned a smile, and both were content to rest awhile longer in each other’s company.
