You have to understand, this isn't a traditional fanfic. It is transcribed from details of a dream I had many years ago.
Sadly, this doesn't involve Ariel, as a matter of fact, I had this dream even before I saw the movie for the first time.
I call it, "The Mermaid's Ring"
It does lack the finer details, as I can't remember them. This was a long time ago. It also seems rushed, but that's the order things happened in my dream. Hope you enjoy it.
It took place out in a wooded meadow (wouldn't that be a forest?) as I'm walking to school. I always walked through this place to get to school. Gentle breeze blowing, the scent of honeysuckle in the air, and soft grass under my feet. I am walking along a meandering path of dirt amidst all the various plant life, and I come across a bridge. I begin to cross that bridge when one of the boards under my feet snaps, sending me down into the river. The span of the bridge is 5 feet across, and the drop to the river below is 3 feet below me, but this river is really more like a shallow stream, but for some reason, I sink through. Now, I have to hold my breath or else I will die, I am still a human. I look up, and that exit is sealed off, I have no way to go back.
I'm looking around, and I see below me, down at the very bottom of the lake I'm in, I see a hole with light shining out of it, and I swim for that hole. When I reach the bottom of the lakebed and begin to swim through this hole, I find that I'm dropped into a room which has a black and white checkboard pattern on the floor, and no water. It's all air, I can breathe again! I stand up after falling flat on my back, and put my hand through that hole, it was wet from the water. When I pulled it back into this room, my hand is completely dry. I look over my body to discover to my amazement that I am completely dry as well! The room is more like a hallway, and I begin to walk down it, and continue to follow it as it turns off to the left. I find myself standing in front of a large green door. As I pull open this door, I am in wonder to find that a wall of water stands right in front of me. I look through this crystal clear liquid... only to see off in the distance... a mermaid!
I see another one next to her. In the center of these two visions of loviness, there sits what I think is the king, and he sits on a mighty throne, the throne is bigger than the king himself. One of the mermaids swims torwards me, and reaches a hand through this wall of water. In her hand, there is a ring. I take it and put it on my finger. I don't feel any different, but after I've put on the ring, she grabs my shirt and pulls me slowly towards her. My face goes into the wall of water, and she tells me to breathe, I can breathe water when I'm wearing this ring. I do so, and to my astonishment, I can breathe underwater.
She swims to the king quickly, while I have to walk, for you see, I still have my legs. He tells me that even though he's distrustful of humans, he needs the help of one, and I agree to help him. From his hands form an orb of some sorts, and I see what the orb sees. What I see in here is horrible, a great war is taking place before my eyes, and I see a young girl pulled violently from his grasp. He stops the vision there and explains to me that the young girl is his only granddaughter. We talk at length, and I learn some details about what is going on. His granddaughter was taken by a rival king in a kingdom not far from here. They are powerless to do anything about it, because they can't breathe air, that's why he needs a human's help. My reward, if I choose to accept it, is that I get to live my life forever as a merman, and I get to marry one of his daughters.
I agree to all of this, I do want to help the king of this kingdom. He reaches into a treasure chest sitting beside him and pulls out a hammer and hands it to me. "Our legends say this will shatter dark images, and most certainly, this is a dark day for us." Words come out of his mouth that I don't understand, and off to my right, I see yet another hole open in the floor of the throne room. "Swim through this" he says, "it is a portal to the realm where you will find him..." he begins to sob a little, "and her.". One daughter turns to comfort him and the mermaid that gave me the ring swims over to me and takes the hand wearing the ring, bringing it closer to her lips. She kisses the jewel on the ring, and it begins to glow bright blue, illuminating her face even further. "Anything you wish, just think that wish, and it is yours. The power of the ring is limited, so choose wisely your wishing thoughts." she says to me.
I start my walk towards the hole in the throne room floor and drop down into a hallway that looks the same as the other one. When I look above me, the hole is no longer there. The hall in front of me is long and winding, taking me in all directions you can imagine, and eventually I come to another green door. This one is locked. I knock and no one answers. I remembered what the mermaid said, anything I wish, just think it, and it will be mine. I thought, "I wish I had the key to this door". In front of me, a key dropped out of nowhere. I picked it up and put it into the keyhole. After a couple turns, I hear a resounding "click" of a lock being released. The door now opens to me, but it opens into an empty identical throne room, like the one I was previously in, but here there was not a soul to be seen.
I stepped through another wall of water and stood on the floor of the room. Walking around was getting hard underwater, so I wished for fins next, and I got them. When I first entered this room, I couldn't tell a difference between it and the last room I'd been in, so I began to explore a little bit. After a time, I found a hole in one of the walls I could swim through. Following this to where it stopped led me into the strangest room I'd seen yet. I could see mirrors all around me, but all of them reflected only my shadow, and remembering the king's words about the hammer, I swung as hard as a I could at the mirror in front of me, and it shattered into hundreds of pieces. There behind this mirror, cowering in the corner, was the king's granddaughter. I swam up to her and took her hand in mine. "Your grandfather sent me to get you out of here." I said to her. She nodded in agreement.
I then thought, "I wish the king's granddaughter were home safely". She disappeared from my view. My next thought "I wish I could see them." and images of the throne room flooded my mind, I knew for certain she'd gotten home safely, for I could see the 4 of them in the throne room dancing and rejoicing. "I want to go back to see the king" I thought. Nothing happened. I looked down at the ring. It was no longer glowing blue, but was black and colorless. Though it had lost its magical abilities, I could still breathe underwater. I swam through the tunnel only to be ambushed by guards on the other side. They took me to see the the evil king, the one who had imprisoned the good king's granddaughter. His greeting didn't even have words in it, he only laughed at me. Reaching out, he grabbed my throat and squeezed. I was having an increasingly harder time breathing, and I began to lose my concentration and strength from struggling against his grasp so much.
His laughs continued, and he reached out and pulled the ring off my finger and tossed it aside, then let go of his grip. On instinct, I gasped for a breath, but since I had lost the ring, I couldn't breathe water anymore! My vision faded to black very quickly.
That's where the story ends. Never once did I go back to the land, or to the good king or evil king. In my dreams, I would check the bridge many times. Never again did the board break, never again did I fall through any portals, never again did that tiny stream turn into a bigger body of water.
