Hi there, everybody, this is my first Little Mermaid fic, as a new member of the forum. The idea for this fic came to me yesterday while riding in the car with a group of my friends. We were cruising through Starbucks, listening to some 1990's weekend mix, and the song, "Save the Best for Last," by Vanessa Williams came on the radio. I just love that song and think it is so beautiful, so I decided to make a fic about it. I love TLM, and just watched it like a week ago, re igniting my obsession with it. So while the song was playing, I got the idea, because the first thing it made me think of was TLM! The song fits so beautifully with that film that I just couldn't resist. So here you go, here is my one-shot fic for TLM, based on the song, "Save the Best for Last." I think that it's very romantic, and a must read for Ariel/Eric lovers like myself.
Oh, and for my own needs, I would be so happy if you guys would leave me a reply on the story, it really means a lot to me!
Standing on two legs, two human legs, Ariel emerged from the water, her hair blowing in the wind, and her body shimmering in a blue dress, that looked as if she had wrapped the ocean around herself. Her cherry lips curling into a smile from ear to ear, and her teeth shining like pearls, Ariel held out her arms. She saw Eric rise up, his eyes sparkling with pure love and adoration, but also amazement. Walking further onto the shore, she was swept up into Eric’s arms.
Feeling the wind blow through her hair and the sun warm her face, as he lifted her and swung her in the air, was the most invigorating feeling she had ever experienced. She was actually here, on land, with two legs, being swept up into the arms of a human, and not just any human, Eric.
And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
The happiness she felt at that moment would have been the hardest thing to possibly put into words, so instead of trying, she lifted herself up on her tiptoes, feeling the warm sand between her toes, and kissed him. It was no mere kiss, but the kiss of true love, the kiss she had been longing for, the kiss that she had built her existence upon.
Passion exploded as their lips met, setting their souls on fire. Now Ariel knew that this was it, this was the kiss she had been waiting for. For some reason, even though she had only know Eric for a short amount of time, she felt like they had been connected forever, since the day she took her first breath. Their souls were connected, they must have been in love a thousand lifetimes before this one, and she didn’t doubt that they would always find one another, in every lifetime to follow. Ariel reasoned that that exact kiss must have been the reason she was even here on this earth, to find Eric, her soul mate.
Now, everything that had come before the moment flooded into her memory, Ariel thought about all that she had done to be there, at that exact moment in time. She had given up everything, trying to make an impossible dream possible. She had given it all up for love, true love, but for a while, she had though that it was all going to slip through her fingers.
All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
You wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you
Going into Ursula’s deal, Ariel had though her dream possible, because deep down, she knew that she and Eric were meant for one another. She had know it from the moment she laid eyes on him. They had spent long days together, in the town and out on the lagoon. That night shined as a beacon in her memory; the music, the dark night sky, the crisp air, the soft bobbing of the boat in the water, the serenading music, and of course, the kiss that almost was.
Ariel knew that Eric truly had fallen in love with her, even without her beautiful voice. He must have found something endearing about his lovely, mute, foundling. She knew that he loved her deep down, for who she was, and for the bond that they shared. But Ursula had almost taken that away, by use of her evil magic, for that was the only way that Eric would have ever given up on his love.
Bringing herself back to the present, Ariel pulled her head back from Eric, releasing his lips. Looking up into his deep, blue eyes, she could see that she had been right all along. She knew that this meant something very special, love like this did not come along every day, perhaps not even in a hundred years.
Eric smiled down at her, his eyes alight, and his heart pounding out of his chest. He knew that he had been foolish to ever let his feelings waver, magic or not. This was love, and love of the greatest kind. Voice or no voice, he loved Ariel with all his heart, and wished now that he had seen that when she washed up on shore as a human for the first time. Perhaps what had happened was all just fate; the sea witch, the speechless beauty, the tipping of the boat, the black magic, the battle for their lives. Yes, he had proved his love for Ariel, and he would do it again, and again, and again.
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
Whatever was to come, Ariel knew that it was going to be spectacular. Anything that life could possibly throw at them, they could handle, together. After all the struggle, they were finally here, and neither one of them really had any desire to leave, they could just stand there forever, looking into one another’s eyes.
Placing his hand beneath her chin, Eric lifted Ariel’s face up so that they were gazing directly at one another. “Ariel,” he said her name with such emotion that her knees buckled, “I love you.”
Throwing her arms around his neck, Ariel kissed Eric again, with all the passion, love, and devotion she could muster up.
Pulling away, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, Ariel placed her hand on Eric’s face, stroking his cheek, and brushing a jet black strand of hair out of his eyes, “I love you too.”
You went and saved the best for last

"The decision to kiss for the first time is the most crucial in any love story. It changes the relationship of two people much more strongly than even the final surrender; because this kiss already has within it that surrender." -- Emil Ludwig

Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
