Author's Notes: I know you guys are waiting for Bittersweet Symphany's next chapter, but I had a bad case of writer's block.
I'm over it though and I have a bunch of drabbles, a mostly finished one-shot, this story and plenty of new ideas for BSS to show for it.
All Through The Night: In the interlude between Morgana's attack and Melody's twelfth birthday, Eric comforts his loved ones after a bad scare.
The lullaby I used for this story has an interesting history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ar_Hyd_y_Nos. I first heard it in an episode of Angel, the spin-off of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and it sounded pretty. Re-watching the episode shortly after the Platinum TLM release, I got inspired.
If you think the tune's not exactly Eric's style, I agree completely. But I thought it fit the person who would have taught it to him very well, so that's my excuse.
Enjoy!
All Through The Night: Part 1
Eric had never felt so helpless. The girl in his arms is still sobbing desolately, and there is nothing he can do but be there for her, as he has for the past ten years. “Hush Sweetheart. It’s all right. I’ve got you. I’ve got you. Shhh…”
He‘s not usually much a singer, but the situation is far from usual. Praying the tune that once soothed his own nightmares will do the same for one of the two most important people in his life, he softly began to croon the familiar words, “Sleep my love, and peace attend thee, all through the night; Guardian angels God will lend thee, all through the night.”
He lifted her wholly into his arms, noting, not for the first time, that she weighed practically nothing. He whispered reassurances as she clung to him. “It’s okay, Darling, I know. I know. .. It’s okay, Angel. It’s okay. Shhh…No more tears.”
Eric carried her into the bedroom and placed her gently on the bed, sitting himself beside her. She leaned back onto his chest, snaking her arms around his waist, unwilling to let him go. For his part, he held her close, offering the support she needed. Her sobs had quieted, but tears still streamed down her lovely face as he continued his gentle lullaby. “Soft the drowsy hours are creeping, hill and vale in slumber steeping, I my loving vigil keeping, all through the night.”
The tears slowed, then stopped all together, but her eyes still reflected her sorrow through the curtain of bangs. Eric absently brushed the hair away and did his best to keep soothing her, “Everything’s all right now. It’s over. Shh…”
She said nothing and her eyes fluttered once, then twice, and then finally closed as he sang for her. “Angels watching ever round thee, all through the night. In thy slumbers close surround thee, all through the night.”
Gently, Eric laid her sleeping form on the pillows, careful not to wake her. He smiled fondly, if a bit sadly at the deceptively peaceful picture before him. “They should of all fears disarm thee. No forebodings should alarm thee. They will let no peril harm thee, all through the night.”
He kissed his wife’s forehead and bid her a silent ‘good night’ before stealing into the hallway, only to realize he was not the only one there.
