"But Everyone Knows Mermaids Are Blonde" has roots going back to last November, when three different things inspired me:
1) On the Platinum DVD in one of the featurettes, someone mentioned that there were some people who felt very passionately that mermaids had to be blonde.
2) The lovely and talented Aquisha had finished her fanfic "Fathoms Below" which featured four original characters, old friends of Eric from school.
3) I re-watched the TLM TV series episode 'Scuttle', where at the very end Eric, who is on-board ship, insists to Grimsby that he saw a beautiful mermaid in the distance (three guesses who), and is told he must be imagining things.
Thus a plot-bunny was born.
I sketched out my general idea of how I wanted the story to go, asked Aquisha if it was okay to borrow her characters, and then finally got around to writing out the darn thing.
Additional note: While this story uses Ethan, Tony, James, and Charlotte, it is not meant to take place in the same universe as Aquisha's own stories.
****************************************************
It was just before the start of term at Crestwood Academy, and usually when a certain group of students were together they got along famously. Today, however, this was not the case. One of their number claimed he had had a most unusual encounter...one simply too unbelievable to be true. Or was it?
Eric glared at his so-called friends, "I saw her!"
Ethan tried very hard not to laugh, "Of course you did."
James, being James, made no such effort. "Do you think he'd be crushed if we told him the truth about Santa Claus?"
Antonia (Tony to everyone that knew her well) glared at both of them, "That's not nice. If Eric says he saw something I believe him. He never makes up stories."
"Unlike you, James." Charlotte added, always eager to defend others, especially if it entailed mocking her on-again off-again boyfriend.
He put up his hands in mock-surrender "Can I help it if the truth sometimes needs a bit of spice?"
There was a resounding chorus of "Yes!", before everyone, including James, burst into fits of laughter.
Ethan was the first to regain control over himself, "But seriously, Eric, couldn't it have been a trick of the light? Or a dolphin maybe?"
The other prince sighed. Already the memory was dimming, though something in him fought to hold on to it . "I suppose...but I swear I saw red hair."
"Come off it Eric, everyone knows mermaids are beautiful blondes." James commented out of nowhere.
Charlotte raised her eyebrows at him, "Says who?"
He just grinned smugly, "Everyone."
"How could everyone know what mermaids look like if they don't exist?" Tony interjected.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
As James and the other three delved into a 'friendly debate' over the topic, Eric just shook his head and silently conceded defeat.
Some time later it was Tony who snapped them all back to reality, "All right everyone, we don't have time to be worrying about mermaids, blonde or otherwise. Classes start tomorrow, and you know what that means..."
"One of Professor Keene's pop quizzes." Charlotte finished for her.
"Joy of joys." Ethan groaned
James nodded in agreement, "Why did the Americans have to have a revolution anyway? It just means more dates to remember..."
"It was all a fiendish plot to make sure you would fail history, James. Which you will if you don't study." Charlotte shot back as she started shoving him out of the room and towards the library.
"Yes, mother." James said rolling his eyes, but he allowed himself to be pushed through the door.
Tony fixed her gaze the remaining boys, "Ethan , Eric, you too. I saw both your grades on that last test." Being somewhat less er...physically persuasive than Charlotte, she trusted them to be right behind her. Or else.
Ethan watched his love depart before turning to his best friend gravely, "Well, my friend, it's time we went to meet our fate, as men, with our heads held high..."
"James, is that you?" Eric snorted, less than impressed.
"Very funny."
"I try."
"You fail miserably, but you try."
Suddenly they heard James' voice, "Come on! If we have to suffer, so do you!"
"Just a minute." Ethan called back before heading off, assuming his god-brother would immediately follow.
Eric started to walk, but found himself pausing at a window overlooking the ocean. In a moment he would rejoin his friends, but for now he allowed himself a small wistful smile as he gazed far, far out to sea.
