A New Seaking
Most of you probably think you know the story of The Little Mermaid pretty well but what you don't know is, Eric is not her real prince, I am! That's right. My name is Prince Marc. Ariel and I have been married for the last 18 years and in that 18 years, we've had a lot of adventures together. One incident that sticks out in my mind happened just a year after our marriage. Ariel had started to miss her home in Atlantica so after much thought and a little coaxing of her father, King Triton, I was turned into a merman and we spent the next few months in his castle. One evening, the entire family was gather at the dinning table. It was Seaweed Pasta, again for the third night in a row. I twirled the pasta on my fork, Ariel took a sip of her tuna colota, Adella munched on a kelp roll. This pattern went on for what seemed like hours until finally, King Triton broke the silence by saying, "So girls, I hear you have big recital coming up." "Oh yes, Father", chimed Arista, "we're going to be performing for Mermaid Choir Championship." Sebastian cried out gleefully. "Oh yes, Your Majesty, the girls have been practicing very hard and I believe we are in line for the Coral Cup this time." Triton smiled. "I'm sure you will win fins down. It's just a shame I won't be there to see it." "Not there?!, shrieked Atina. "How can you not be there Daddy?" "Yeah Your Majesty" I inquired, "what's so important?" "Well, I recieved a letter from the King of Atlantis today about a very urgent matter that is going to take two tides to resolve." All at once everyone began talking amongst themselves. This was the first time in a very long time that King Triton had left the kingdom for such a long period of time. "But Your Majesty", Sebastian asked, "if you gone, who will run the kingdom?" Triton rubbed his chin. He hadn't thought this one out. Before he could even begin to think about who a good candidate would be, I stood up from my seat and said, "I'll do it" All heads turned and all eyes looked directly at me. I felt as if I'd just said the stupidest thing the world. Finally, after managing to stifle a laugh, Triton cleared his throat and replied, "Marc, I appreciate your offer but this matter is very serious." "Marc can do it, Daddy.", Ariel said. "Him?", Sebastian said. He fell out of his chair and on the floor holding his sides with laughter. "It took that boy two tides just to learn how to swim properly." "Hey!", I yelled, "I can do it and I'll prove it. Just give me a chance Your Majesty. I'll prove I can be as good a king as you." Triton breathed a heavy sigh. As most of you know, he isn't a fan of humans and having one rule his kingdom for two tides didn't sound like the most logical choice but, seeing as he couldn't think of no one else suitable for the job, he swam over and put a hand on my shoulder. "Very well, young merman. I'll give you a chance but don't let me down." I nodded gratefully. Sebastian was horrified. "You can't be serious. You're going to leave him to run this kingdom all by himself?!" "Of course not.", replied King Triton, "you're going to stay behind and guide him." "What?!", the crab shrieked. He then turned to Ariel and leaning close to her ear said, "And I'm leaving you here to make sure that both of them survive." Ariel laughed. "Okay, Daddy." Motioning for me to bow, Triton removed his crown a placed it on my head. "I bestow upon you the crown of leadership. Remember the responsibilty you now have, Marc, and do not take it lightly." He then handed me his trident. "And this is only to be used in an exteme emergency." "Yes Sire," I replied. The next morning was filled with tearful goodbyes and anxious feelings as King Triton's soldiers packed up his chariot. Ariel, Sebastian and I were the first ones in line to see King Triton off. "Have a good trip, Daddy.", Ariel said, giving her father a big hug. "I will and you be sure to keep an eye on these two." He shot warning glances at me and Sebastian, who smiled the biggest, fakest grins ever to hide our fears. "Sebastian, I expect to see a full report of the events when I return." "Oh don't worry your Majesty, I will." Then he turn to me and added, "And I won't leave anything out." King Triton placed a silver crown on his head with a matching trident. As I watched him climb into his charriot and ride away, only one thing kept replaying in my mind, it was going to be a long two tides.
