I know they are related, but Why is she more famous than her daughter?? Some will say because she is the original under the sea Princess ;D. I like her more, and my personal opinion is that she shouldn`t have had a daughter, or at least not soo soon, or soo young!!!!!!!!!I like Ariels hair color more too. It was like in Sailor Moon, when she had rini, the magic was gone, because the little girl up to that point was SERENA, until her future daughter appeared. By the way, I don`t like those anime anymore just in case, personal faith reasons, but back to Ariel, why did Disney decide to make the Little mermaid part 2, and instead of Ariel being the protagonist, it has to be Melody, her daughter?. I barely see any Melody merchandise out there, only Ariel, and in the Disney Princesses, Melody in not considered as one, which is strange. It`s like if Melody had never even existed, and I think it should have been like that, since they kinda eliminated her, did they I see her more as a little sister or small cousin, niece, etc, than as a daughter!! and Ariel looks way too young to look like a mother!!! She was even a mother more sooner than her sisters, and she was the youngest from her sisters!!!!!! Not saying that younger people can`t be parents, just that in Disney movies, I find it strange sometimes, since they are cartoons for children and stuff. Oh and I didn`t see any Ariel or mermaid smilies !!!!

I think Ariel is most popular because she got her happy ending and MORE. She is the only princess to start a family, it took Jasmine 3 movies to just get married!!! I actually like TLM 2, and Melody, even though some people might think it wasn't necessary.

I think Ariel being the original is a HUGE part of it. She's loved by generations and generations since The Little Mermaid was so successful when it was first released. The sequel wasn't even released to theaters, it went straight to DVD, which therefore cut out a lot of attention it could have gotten if it had been in the media more.
The whole story has a lot to do with it too. In the Little Mermaid, it was about a spunky mermaid who wanted something more than life was offering. She found the love of her life, and was determined to be with him. The movie just had this magic that is impossible to recreated. Especially if it's based off the original heroine's daughter/son.
The majority of the time, audiences want their happy ending and want it to be the END. Real life goes on, that's why movies are made as entertainment, a sort of escape from the real world. Most people aren't interested in the kids Ariel and Eric had, they just wanted to see them ride off into the sunset sharing true love's kiss.
But, Disney felt the need to introduce the sequel... not sure why. It reminds me of the Lion King II, it's one of those things that if allowed could just keep going and going. Muffasa has Simba, Simba encounters struggles through his life but in the end beats the bad guy and gets the girl. Him and his love have their daughter, the end. No. The sequel comes out and the daughter of Simba now has adventures of her own, meets her mister right, defeats the bad guy/girl, and then has a child of her own. What next? History keeps repeating!
So, it's the same with TLM. Ariel has a daughter, blah blah blah, eventually Melody has a daughter/son who goes through similar things as both his/her grandmother and mother. It's just not the same as the original. So, yeah. haha I feel like I'm just rambling. It made sense in my head. ;P
Basically Ariel was the original little mermaid. The movie was just so huge, and the ending was good. There was no need for a sequel, so it wasn't able to duplicate the success, and Melody did not receive the same welcome as Ariel.

History keeps repeating! Wait, I thought Lion King II was the reason why we even knew what gender that Simba and Nala's cub was in the first place? Well, whatever the case, Melody will at least co-star with Ariel in my eyes, especially with my upcoming fanfic "The Little Mermaid III: Vanessa Unleashed". However, I think Ariel should take care of the Titular antagonist, as it would only be fair that she does it for once (I'm not counting Ariel's Beginning, since a lot of things were completely messed up.) Personally, while I don't like Melody not quite getting the focus she needed especially in comparison to her mom, I at least feel that she was fortunate that she did not end up joining the Disney Princesses (which I still feel the whole line is an insult to their characters, replacing their characters with Hollywood Starlet personalities and being a combination of Grimhilde and the triplets. Honestly, even Ariel was not exempt from this. Ariel, as well as her feminist characterization, was the reason why Disney exists today, and how do they repay her? They change most of her personality to match the unrealistic standards of Disney Princesses, which is basically the Bulimic/Anorexic celebrity models for children.).

Ariel.
I guess maybe it's because these direct2video things never really take off.
Or that Disney didn't care enough about going into a TLM2 merchandise line.

My point was that we didn't need to know the gender of Simba and Nala's cub. Like I said, the audience seeing these films usually isn't interested in what goes on behind closed doors. We saw that Simba and Nala ended up together and had a child. The ending scene was a reprise of the opening scene, showing "the circle of life." So, we get the point, the circle of life goes on, I personally felt there was no need to go into detail with a sequel.
Same goes for TLM. We saw Ariel and Eric ride off on their wedding ship, living happily ever after. Why do we need to see what happens afterwards? Of course as I already said, this is just my opinion. I feel like sequels more so than not end up being repetitive and unoriginal. The only sequel made by Disney that I feel either matched or surpassed the magic of the first was Toy Story. Because they went in a whole new direction instead of repeating history. I wanted to see what was going to happen to these beloved toys of Andy's.
Anyway, I got off topic mentioning other sequels. But again that's why I prefer Ariel to Melody, and why I think she's more successful as a character.

Disney sequels come very secondary to their original films. They show some commercials for them and release limited products, and don't expect much to become of them. I don't even know why they bother, with the exception of Peter Pan 2 they all are pretty terrible. Back on topic I think most people put TLM 2 on the back burner or try to forget it completely. Ariel is the real star. TLM was a spectacular, touching, and wonderful movie for it's time. It pretty much revived Disney as far as animated films goes. Melody well...there isn't much to say. Why would she be popular? Why would she be a part of the Disney princess line? She doesn't deserve that, she's pretty sucky.

Jazzy, that was amazing. Basically exactly what I wanted to say, but for some reason I felt the need to write half a dozen paragraphs. XD

I agree with everybody else. Ariel is the real star; not Melody.
Well, I found an article that says that somebody to those horrible, satanic direct-to-video sequels. (THANK GOD!!! ABOUT TIME!!! My criticism about dreck sequels must have finally sunk in those pompous disney employee's dumb brains!)
I agree with angelprincessstar. I only like the first arc of Sailor Moon because in arc 2, it went down in the drain b/c of Rini. I don't know why Disney thinks we like movies about our favorite cartoon couples having kids-we don't!!

i think for one the little mermaid is the original and there is a lot more history behind the first one..if you look at the little mermaid compared to beauty and the beast and alladin it kind of started it all. another thing is its a sequel and not the original i really don't think Disney counts sequels because i looked at a list on their website somewhere and there were no sequels listed of any disney movie. i also think its because the little mermaid had a point and a lesson to learn along with being a love story where as the little mermaid 2 didnt have really have a strong enough lesson behind it or a point to be made. i think the reason why disney didnt promote melody as a princess was because shes not a moneymaker compared to ariel, belle, etc.

I don't know why Disney thinks we like movies about our favorite cartoon couples having kids-we don't!! QUOTE from me It was like in Sailor Moon, when she had rini, the magic was gone, because the little girl up to that point was SERENA, until her future daughter appeared. >> THIS IS TOO CONFUSING, THE NEO-QUEEN SERENITY OR PRINCESS SERENA, WE DON`T KNOW WHAT THE HECK TO CALL HER ANYMOREIT WAS BETTER WHEN WE COULD CALL HER PRINCESS SERENA, DAUGHTER OF MOON QUEEN SERENITY !! IT WAS MORE SIMPLE AND LESS CONFUSING IT`S THE SAME THING AS WITH ARIEL AND MELODY, WHICH ONE IS THE REAL PRINCESS OF THE SEA THEN ?? I AGREE AND I AGREE WITH JODEE ALSO ;D
quote i also think its because the little mermaid had a point and a lesson to learn along with being a love story where as the little mermaid 2 didnt have really have a strong enough lesson behind it or a point to be made.
TLM1 is about love, with a love story and TLM2 doesn`t have a love story per se !!!!!!!

It has to has to has to be Melody, Whats wrong with you people? I mean, yeah a mermaid wanting to be a human, thats great, Its origanal and it made way for number 2 But Melody can relate to all of us, we all want to be mermaids, Melody wanted to be a mermaid, And look at us, were all here talking about mermaids, wishing that just once, Something magic would turn us into mermaids but thats not possible so, we just have to settle for watching some lucky cartoon to have my wish, my dream. Well thats my opinion, I <3 Melody.

That's why Ariel is so popular, not only is she a princess but she's a mermaid. BONUS!!! All little girls either want to be a princess or a mermaid and Ariel is BOTH!!!

Well, i just want to be a mermaid Even if i was a maid, id still love to be a mermaid. But, Melody is a princess, and she wants to be a mermaid, like every little/big girl. Therefore, thats why i dont get whyy shes not more popular?

I like them both but movie wise, I like TLM better. Ariel is famous because of the 1989 film; not because of TLM 2-3 or her Disney Princess merchandise. (And I think it is silly for people to hate her and other girls just because they're the only classic Disney you see at Target and Walmart).

Because Melody is annoying and Ariel didn't spend so much time whining.

Ariel.
One reason is because she's the original and maybe marketing or something had to do with it?
