Well, as for the first question, I have always seen both Ariel and Eric being great friends with Jasmine and Aladdin. For some reason, I feel like these two couples have the most in common: they're both between the ages of 16 and 18, both girls run away from home to be with boys they're not supposed to be with, and both couples share a sense of adventure that lies beyond their reach.
Also neither of the couples are really "prince/princess" material. If you think about both of their series, Aladdin and Jasmine were always out and about in Agrabah, never actually doing official work and Ariel was always roaming the ocean, getting into trouble while Eric was sailing constantly.
In short, Aladdin, Jasmine, Ariel, and Eric are the closest things to real teenage couples that Disney has yet to create. Seriously, I can just imagine them as high school kids hanging out together in some Disney-fied version of "Saved by the Bell". I think for that reason, they go better together than with any of the classic couples or with any of the couples from the more contemporary but deeper movies like Pocahontas or Hunchback or Mulan or even BatB.
As for the second question, I really can't say that I can see Eric with another girl. That one I might have to think about....

I could also see Eric getting along with Hercules. They're both sweethearts.

A thread for Eric enthusiasts!! How exciting! Thank you very much WickedElphie for starting this! Hello! I am rosa and would definitely call myself an "Eric Enthusiast." I honestly can't recall how I became such a fan of Eric, I think I've always had a real soft spot for him. He is my favorite Disney prince. And I enjoy including him in my fanfics. Why do I like him? He is kind, brave, smart, longs to explore the sea, and quite handsome! Also, from Snow White up to TLM, he is one of the few Disney princes who didn't simply serenade the heroine and then vanish until the finale. We see Eric throughout the film -- though not enough in my humble opinion -- and he has a big part in defeating Ursula and saving Ariel. He is no pretty boy sitting on the sidelines waiting to come in for the happily ever after! Go Eric! While I haven't seen the Broadway musical (and I want to really badly!), I am in love with the songs Eric was given. "Her Voice" I think would have fitted right in with movie, giving us a wonderful glimpse of how Eric's mind was filled with thoughts of the mysterious girl who rescued him, and maybe how he had been trying to find her. The youtube video of "One Step Closer" is beyond romantic. Sean!Eric and Sierra!Ariel are so so sweet together. I personally like the ponytail. He also struck me as someone who thought for himself, but also who thinks about things before he acts on them for the most part as displayed in the movie. He was excited about seeing Ariel at first thinking she was the "voice" but then he was disappointed. There was no, "Oh, well I was sure I was in love with the person who rescued me, but hey you're hot!!" And when Vanessa showed up, if you noticed his expression, he didn't get all excited and giddy like he did with Ariel on the rock. A lot of that was because he realized he loved someone else. But he looked skeptical looking at Vanessa, like he didn't have the "feeling" anymore and it was a surprise to him. That is a brilliant post! Thank you for pointing out that Eric has more character than first meets the eye. I would like to throw out a question about our Eric if I may: If Ariel and her friends had not crashed the wedding, what would have become of Eric? Would the spell on him be broken when the sun set (or not)? Would he remember Ariel and everything that had happened? When he found out she had vanished would he search for her or eventually settle on someone else? Would he remain a bit of a sailor or would he stay at the castle and become more of a ruler? Any thoughts?

I think poor Eric would have become as much Ursula's prisoner as Ariel. IMHO if he had said the marriage vows/kissed the bride that would have been a kind of "contract" that would have bound him to the sea witch. Otherwise why not just kill him once she has him under her power? This way Ursula gets to cause more suffering.
I've read a lot of fantasy literature where vows and promises carry a lot of weight, so that's where I'm coming from with this idea.

As for the second question, I really can't say that I can see Eric with another girl. That one I might have to think about.... I always thought that too, Aquisha! Those four seem like they would be great friends! I was in a thread where Eric and Aladdin get lost in Andalasia together. lolz And (Please don't KEEL me! lolz) I can see Eric with (AU, NO Ariel!) with Belle. Dang it! They're quite compatiple. Both could share in lots of different talks about life and meaning while having adventures with her traveling on the seas. They do fall in love and don't care if it's seen as right or normal, but just trust their heart. Plus, he would admire her strong sense of self, as well as her good heart and bravery and empathise with the feeling of wanting to be somewhere else . However, they both are very caring, and hold the ones they love dear and above everything else. Oh, and smart to boot! lolz But more than Belle I see Jasmine. Both yearn for their own freedom, and are desperately searching for that one person to spend the rest of their life together, even if everyone else thinks that dream person is non-existant. A friend and I are actually working on a fanfic about them. (I personally would have never thought of them as a couple until the rp we joined, even then they're more like brother and sister ) And thank you so much Rosa! It just bugs me when people acted so snooty about him or anyone else in the movie (Ariel is not an airhead and Eric is not weak willed! lolz ) Yeah, I think I have to agree with Elphie. I think on top of being ruler of the ocean Ursula wouldn't have minded having him around as eye candy for one thing. She noticed those kind of things. (Not that it was her top priority)

Yeah, I think I have to agree with Elphie. I think on top of being ruler of the ocean Ursula wouldn't have minded having him around as eye candy for one thing. She noticed those kind of things. You know I bet if I looked hard enough I could find some truly disturbing fanfic based around that idea... So anybody got some brain bleach I could borrow?

Hmm, I'd imagine there would be somehting like that out there. I'm curious about it myself.
Wasn't she the first villain to show interest in the hero?
I know afterwards it was Belle, Jasmine, Megara

Whenever anyone at school asks me "So Lara, who do you like?" I say "A fictional character named Eric" And they say "Oh Lara, stop obsessing The Little Mermaid!" Yep, people know me that well to know that I have a crush on Eric :'( When I say "A fictional character named Eric", people sometimes reply "No, seriously, who do you like? Eric F from English? Erik L from Math?" And I say "No, PRINCE Eric" They all just stare at me like I spoke in some foreign language but I DON'T REALLY MIND IT! :'( LONG LIVE CAPTAIN TIGHTPANTS!! (edited in 2020 to take out the literal doxxing of people's full names that I did in middle school...way to go Lara š¤¦š»āāļø but here have a taste of who I was in the year 2008 lmao)

Seconded.
Anyway, does anyone have a favorite line Eric says?
Mine is during Kiss The Girl when he goes, "Ariel. that's kinda pretty. Okay...Ariel" *Swoon.*

Third. No need to feel shame hon. LOLz
Oh, I like that one and how his tone changes when he says it. From nearvous to huskily. Nice LOL
I'd have to go with the 'I lost her once. I'm not gonna lose her again!" So determinded! <3
What I noticed is that his timing for times in the movie will be off and I find that very cute.
Examples:
"... I'm gonna find that girl. And I'm going to marry her..." ::in comes red head in pink dress::
Eric thinking seeing redhead: Uh.... what was I saying again?
"It'll hit me. Bam.. Like lighting." ::lighting cracks::

I adore Prince Eric :'( . I've had a crush on him since I was a little kid. I like him because he's more than the fairy tale prince--he has an interesting personality. He isn't drawn to palace life, and wants adventure on the high seas. He's also very kind--he immediately took in Ariel when he found her on the beach. His looks don't hurt either I can certainly see him being buddies with Prince Phillip, since Phillip is another prince who actually does something. Both princes rescue their girls, and were willing to do anything to save them. I don't like taking Eric away from Ariel, but the only other Disney girl I can think of him possibly being with is Belle--because like Ariel, she is intelligent, brave, and adventurous. I think that Eric would be very impressed by her, and she by him, considering the fact that they're somewhat alike. My favorite line that Eric says is probably "You look wonderful."( When he sees Ariel in the pink dress ). I also love the scene when Ariel jumps the ravine, and the look on his face--priceless. He's so handsome ::sigh::

-prepares for long-winded discussion-
Eric's been my favorite prince for...well...I don't know if I ever had any other favorite Disney prince. He's been my favorite ever since my parents brainwashed Little-Zavi with Disney movies.
I write constantly, so I have very detailed interpretations of each character I'm fond of. Here's a bit of my take on Eric:
The best part about Eric's character, compared to the other Disney guys, is that he actually HAS character. Aladdin and Herc don't count--they were main characters. Eric was just the prince, like Phillip or Charming, who had more of a role in the plot than Snow's Prince but less than a rich character like Adam. Kudos to the animators and the writers for giving him a personality. I wish we had seen more of it, but there's enough that we Er-heads can have the same idea of his character.
It's a shame when people misinterpret him as shallow, though. I could never fathom an Eric like that.
I love how Eric is a passionate character. He clearly has an affinity with the sea and would enjoy nothing more than a sailing trip by himself, with Max, with his crew, or with Ariel. He's a prince that has a life outside of "Hey, girls: I'm charming and princely! Marry me and we'll have a happily ever after!", which makes him all the more attractive. I don't think he's quite ready to accept the throne, but he obviously has to--he has a kind heart and would make a better leader than a King who enjoyed the luxury of being royalty.
Oh, and Max! Don't get me started on Max. Eric obviously loves him very much. I've always seen Eric as an outcast (sort of like Ariel), shy and with few good friends, since he's a prince with a distaste for air-headed royalty. Max seems like the perfect companion for a weirdo (in a good way) like Eric--always ready to listen and offer his doggy-advice when Eric is conflicted. Seriously, the movie would have been so much shorter if Eric had just listened to Max.
I adore how Eric has conversations with animals; he confides in Max. I'd imagine that'd make him odd among royalty, but as an animal-lover I think it's perfectly normal. XP
I think Eric's humble side is a good, though subtle, element of his character. He seems content with a simple life--sailing in a meager ship with no ties to royal this and luxury that, with no money to his name. I don't think he likes the idea of having money just because of his family.
My favorite Eric line: A popular one, where Eric guesses Ariel's name in the boat. He turns his head when he says, "That's kind of pretty," and it's the cutest thing ever! I can't help the warm fuzzies every time I watch that scene.
Any line that involves Max sweeps me off my feet (fins? paws?) too. I can't help but love a guy who loves dogs as much as I do.
If I had to pair Eric with anyone other than Ariel, it'd have to be Belle. Belle and Eric are both oddballs with a taste for something more than they were born to be. They both have animal companions, though Belle's is a draft horse that could plop Eric's boats to the sea floor, and their pets are very loved. Hopefully Belle doesn't get seasick...

I think if i absolutely HAD to I might pair Eric up with Meg. Meg's sort of how Ariel might be if she was older and things hadn't ended so happily. She's strong, an amazing singer, and would do anything for love and because of that made a bad deal with a powerful evil.
And this has nothing to do with my gigantic girlcrush on Susan Egan. *Cough* Nothing at all.

Great analysis people! I get annoyed when people just ignore those things. LOL And yeah, just something to think about; in the origanal story the prince's birthday party was a lavish royal event with many nobles. But in the movie Eric's party is with a bunch of sailors. And it didn't really seem like a 'birthday party' so much as a bunch of guys hanging out. It would have been funny to have a scene where he and Grimsby argue over if the party should be a 'royal affair' which I imagine Grim would want. LOL I see Eric being really good friends with more of the non-prince Disney guys. Like Aladdin and Jim Hawkins, since Eric was the first Disney prince who wasn't so.... 'princey' LOL Hmm, trying to think of how Eric and Belle would work; Okay AU! ((I LOVE Ariel i don't want her hurt in any way!! LOL)) Eric could be traveling to France maybe being nagged into meeting with the princess. He meets and finds she's just about like every other girl of noble blood. He goes to take a walk and think about things. While walking and wondering to himself about life he walks into a little town. He really lost in his thoughts at this point then he feels something hit his foot. A book. He bends down to pick it up to see a much smaller hand reaching for it. He looks up and is confronted by the most beautiful face he had ever seen. Belle doesn't notice him looking at her since she's staring up annoyed at Gaston. She then glances to the book and the hand by it. She blinks not expecting him. He must be new like she was. Eric then hands it to her and says maybe, "Oh, did you drop this, Miss? Erm, you might want to clean that off unless there's some new thread of reading dirty books-- I mean um, mud covered litterture..." then rubs the back of his head feeling a little stupid at his lame obsevation. Belle lets out a laugh, maybe it was so lame that she finds it amusing or that someone wasn't baggering her about reading. Maybe he could be her friend? Possibly for the rest of the plot it could be that Eric is suppose to marry a princess and feels duty, but loves Belle very much. And that he doesn't tell her he's a prince since she seemed so kind and lively that he didn't want that to ruin anything. (Maybe, but Eric isn't really a liar, so much as he's someone who wants to know how people really are without them knowing that about him) So at some point when Belle would find out and be p***** off at him. Gawd! I'm awful! Someone.... please stop me! And Ariel is my favorite princess!! lolz I think if i absolutely HAD to I might pair Eric up with Meg. Meg's sort of how Ariel might be if she was older and things hadn't ended so happily. And this has nothing to do with my gigantic girlcrush on Susan Egan. *Cough* Nothing at all. I've thought that about her too! Meg's situation before didn't sound all that different from Ariel's. I mean they both "sold themselves" for men they cared about, the only thing was Ariel happened to get a guy who was willing to love her, with or without a fish tail, while going to any lengths to kill a witch for her. However, Meg was sadly played (not to say that couldn't have happened to Ariel or a lot of girls for that matter) by someone she thought loved her. And if Ariel (by off chance cause Eric is awesome! ) hadn't had Eric fall in love with her, and instead he was stupid and went for Vanessa then I imagine Ariel woudn't have been so sweet if she had to work for Ursula who would have destroyed her family, while she had been rejected. But having said THAT, it would have to be Eric a couple years older, and maybe a little more damaged himself. Only cause Meg wasn't 'sweet', and it seems like Eric likes girls who are sweet and tough. But if he was a little older he and Meg would work out better.

Miss? That made my morning. Poor Eric...I could see him doing that. I never thought of Eric with Meg, though I guess it's hard to think of him with anyone but Ariel. It makes sense, and it'd be funny to see Eric acting like Herc in reaction to all Meg's witty/snide remarks about everything. Any guy would find Meg tough to handle, but Eric and Hercules especially... As for any other Disney characters, Eric needs to be chucked some device that will take him to planet Montressor, so he can meet the Treasure Planet crew. Eric would have a blast solar surfing (though I'd imagine he'd be mortified at first), and would probably be used to people like Captain Amelia. He'd fit in well once he got used to all the aliens and the technology. Eric would probably try to do something on the ship and accidentally break/explode one of the gadgets...

The only question I have about Meg/Eric is how he would get her to open up. I was in a Disney RPG with a Meg/Phillip pairing I made up after being overcome by curiousity as to how Meg would react to a fairy-tale prince. It turned out pretty well actually, after she started talking to him.

Hmm...I could see Eric literally bumping into Meg in Thebes. (assuming time travel or a past life since Eric's an 18th/early 19th century prince and Meg's in mythical Greece).
He'd feel bad, help her pick up dropped stuff and be intrigued by her. She'd be amused/annoyed by him and deliver the "I can tie my own sandals and everything" line before disappearing into the crowd.
Eric would keep looking for her and eventually find her. He'd trail after her like a lost puppy and Meg would grudgingly let him. Secretly she'd think he was kind of cute. He'd help her out of some kind of tough spot and she'd realize he was brave and a genuinely good guy. They'd get to talking along the way.
Assuming Hades was an issue Eric would help Meg come up with a plan to thwart Hades's schemes and get her freedom.

That sounds interesting. I can imagine him helping out of a tight spot thought. In the RPG, Phil had to save her life before she even considered him . I was wondering, since it's not really said in the movie, how old do you think Eric is? I was guessing around 18-ish. I know in the musical they said he was 25, but I imagined him a bit younger. What do you guys think?
