pixar.wikia.com/NewtThis is particularly sad news for me. I am a committed Pixar fan and was looking forward to this film. And now I don't get to see it. Why should it matter that similar films are coming out? Pixar will bring their own style and creative flair to the story, making it unique even if the themes are similar to something else being released.

I was disappointed that they cancelled Newt. I saw a trailer for Alpha and Omega and I didn't like it. Too much potty humor and I didn't like how they made Alpha flip her hair. It was too exaggerated in a sexily manner.
I guess Pixar cancelled their film because they didn't want to be accused of or be sued for "ripping off" someone else's movie. Their movie, "The Lion King" although a classic, got bad reputation for being a rip-off of "Kimba the White Lion," although there is debate about whether The Lion King was a homage to or a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion.
Back in the 1950s, Walt Disney tried to make Beauty and the Beast as his next animated feature but cancelled it because France had already made their own 1946 film version of Beauty and the Beast.
Although they created "The Wild" based on their own ideas, by the time it came out, Dreamworks had already created Madagascar. People see "The Wild," as a rip-off of Madagascar (and Finding Nemo).
