Anyone realize how similar The Little Mermaid's "Part of your World" and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame's "Out there" are?
Here's something I just wrote up (seriously, in the last 30 min or so). I just adjusted the lyrics in Out There to me more mermaid'ish so it basically became:
"UP THERE".
----
TRITON
Their world is cruel
Their world is wicked
It's only merfolk you can trust in this whole city
We are your only friends
We who keep you, teach you, feed you, dress you
We who hold you with love sincere
How can I protect you, girl, unless you
Always stay down here
Away in here
Remember what I taught you, Ariel
You are mermaid
ARIEL
I am a mermaid
TRITON
And you are child
ARIEL
And I am child
TRITON
And these are crimes
For which their world
Shows little pity
You do not comprehend
ARIEL
You are my one defender
TRITON
Out there they'll revile you
As someone different
ARIEL
I am different
TRITON
Out there they will hate
And scorn and jeer
ARIEL
Only different
TRITON
Why invite their calmuny
And consternation?
Stay in here
Be faithful to me
ARIEL
I'm faithful
TRITON
Grateful to me
ARIEL
I'm grateful
TRITON
Do as I say
Obey
And stay
Down here
ARIEL
I'll stay
Down here
///
ARIEL
Safe behind these waters in these deep fathoms unknown
Gazing at ships and sailors above me
All my life I watch them as I hide down here alone
Hungry for the histories they show me
All my life I memorize their faces
Knowing them as they will never know me
All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day
Not below them
But part of them
And up there
Living in the sun
Give me one day up there
All I ask is one
To hold forever
Up there
Where they all live unaware
What I'd give
What I'd dare
Just to live one day up there
Up there among the sailors and the boaters and their wivers
Through the waves and ripples I can see them
Every day they shout and scold and go about their lives
Heedless of the gift it is to be them
If I had two legs
I'd treasure every instant
Up there
Strolling now and then
Tour the kingdom up there
And then do it again
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then
I swear I'll be content
With my share
Won't resent
Won't despair
Old and bent
I won't care
I'll have spent
One day
Up there!
---
I don't think it's too bad. It was kinda funny all the Hunchback "down there"s changed to Mermaid "up there"s. The last part, Ariel's/Quasimodo's part was pretty much left unaltered since there is so much similarity. I'd only comment and say Triton's part is rather dark.
