I have a question for my fellow guys here on the forum. How do you deal with criticism or getting made fun of? When I was little ( In the early elementary school years, I'm now a senior in high school) I was very open about me loving The Little Mermaid. Yet, after several years of teasing I told everyone I didn't like it anymore and am still keeping it secret. People who used to know me in those years still think I'm gay because of it, which I am not. How do you fellow guys deal with this? The only people who know are my family members. Aside from my Dad( my parents are divorced and My Ariel collection is at my Moms house.) So that is all I wanted to say for now and I am curious to see how you guys handle this? Girls feel free to comment as well

Oh I've been called every name in the book for liking TLM. But I suppose my love for it surpassed my want to keep it a secret, because I love it until the day I die. But yes, it is incredibly, hard, because if you say you love Ariel the grown-ups would think I was just going through a phase and bought me hot wheels. And my dad threw away my Ariel dolls. It's hard to be accepted, but thanks to places like this, guy fans of TLM don't have to be alone.

I Know, all through my younger years I thought I was the only guy who loved Ariel. What I don't understand though, is that Girls don't get made fun of for liking things that guys are more known to like, yet guys who like TLM do. You're right it is a challenge and, WOW, I am sick of it. WHY CAN'T SOCIETY SMARTEN UP!!!! Also have people ever considered that most of the people who worked on TLM were guys.

That's such a good point...lol. Ron Clements and John Musker were two married, heterosexual men who wanted to bring a good story. The music is by two men, Menken and Ashmen. Ariel's leader animator: Male. I'd say Jodi is about as feminine as that crew got xD

Well, when I got older I realized that I could say right out loud that I loved the Disney movies and the little mermaid. And I would not take anything from anyone for it... Of course being 2 meters tall helps a lot when making such a statement. But that is how I tackled it. And nowadays people thinks it is quite cool that I dare say that I like the little mermaid. I had a presentation in front of my whole art school, on university level, mind you, about my art and what inspires me. And guess what I told them. Yes that is right. I told them I get a lot of my inspiration from Disney, and that I started out my career as an artist on this forum. I passed the presentation with flying colours. And I did something. I took the first step of introducing people to the thought that these movies can serve as inspiration for artist without them being ashamed of saying so. The best thing is to stand proud and not take bull from people that do not understand, because why care about them. Anyway that is how I think. Signed Swemer, the big Swede.

Well, I am a gay guy but when I was young, I had everything The Little Mermaid related taken away from me, because my parents think I would end up acting or singing like her (Which turned out to be truth But it hurt so much when I was young. Now that I am an adult and have my own money, I've been collecting The little mermaid stuff including plush etc I am not ashamed of it anymore and my friends are very supportive !

I am not afraid to show it. But ALOT of my friends know and the ones who do are supportive and others are not very supportive. The reason I am keeping it secret from my Father is that he would BLOW UP! He would probably go on some rampage and destroy all my stuff. I remember when I was little, by brother told him about it ( not knowing he wasnt supposed to) and he broke my favorite Ariel doll right in front of me. So, uhhh, yeah. Not planning on telling him anytime soon.

How do you deal with criticism or getting made fun of? ... How do you fellow guys deal with this? I don't get bothered by my interests in stereotypically "girly" or "childish" things but I kinda find I need to explain myself somewhat. Usually it's just a one-time conversation and the 'questioning' is very quickly passed over. Anyone who knows me knows I like Disney and, frankly, if they give me a tough time about anything relating to who I am then I'm probably going to sever ties with them.

I have friends (girls) who are all into Disney since we worked there on the international program for a year. They are very supportive and my family has since changed and allow me to be who I am.

I think every guy that likes Disney gets made fun-of at one time or another, I know I did. I didn't lute anyone know that I liked the little mermaid until I was 21 and off fighting in the war. That's when I found LAF and know everyone knows. I don't know why everyone thinks that Disney is girly, I got the same thing over Kim Possible it got to the point that people started calling me Kim. I learned to just ignore them, and now people see it doesn't bother me so they stop.

Well here's something cool, the site owner LittleAriel is a guy too! That's true My son was born one month before TLM first came out in 1989 and I can still remember him crying through a lot of the film and my wife had to take him with his basinette to the back of the theater. So for me, there is a connection there. Also, my sister is a true red-head. About 5 years later I started collecting TLM stuff, then when the internet started taking over, I learned HTML and created a few pages. Then I created LittleAriel.com in 2000 and put her online in 2001. Soon after, I saw the need to create a forum and so LittleAriel Forum was born. After a while I couldn't keep up with it so I turned it over to Jazzy who has been instrumental in keeping this great little forum alive. HUGS go to Jazzy!! Both sites have been labors of love, but unfortunately, I just don't have the time anymore to maintain my LA site as much as I'd like to. Despite all that, LittleAriel.com is one of the most popular and visited Disney related sites on the web today. It's actually in the top 100,000 internet sites. My son, interestingly enough became a swimmer and competed very well through high school and is now about to graduate College. As for my TLM collection, well, it's now taking over my house. Believe it or not, most guys secretly LOVE Ariel, just most would never admit it. There's a stigma there. Guys mostly would feel that they are weak it they would admit to liking TLM. As for me, I don't really mind because I'm secure in my own skin. Anyway, Ariel is part of my life and I wouldn't want it any other way :'(

I know the discussion on this topic's over but I want the people here to know my days with TLM. Ariel and TLM are my childhood friends!!!! I used to watch the series since I was in Grade 4 and even now I do!!!! At first, I used to conceal my love for Ariel, 'cos I thought well that people wud make fun of me. Now, I really don't bother. Now, during the school functions and ceremonies, I pin up this badge- like thing, I have with Ariel's photo in it onto my blazer.
I don't know what's wrong with loving Disney, why do you get called "childish" for that? What kind of a stubborn attitude? Come on, it's the 21st century, people; broaden up!!!! I like to play with TLM dolls even now, and I look forward to buying every new merchandise in market.
I luv Ariel very much and I know I'll luv her forever. LONG LIVE ARIEL AND TLM!!!!
