Disney is currently working on a live action remake of Mulan, which is due for release on 20th December 2019. Disregard the projected 2018 release date for now, at this time, production has been delayed by an additional year. Yifei Liu was announced as the choice to play Mulan on November 29, 2017. The casting Director stated they were specifically looking for an English speaking actress with martial arts experience. No other cast members have been announced at this time. I remember Yifei from her appearance in the Forbidden Kingdom movie, where she played the role of Sparrow and her 20th century counterpart. That was a martial arts film and according to the data, her first significant movie role. I wonder if they'll have singing too? I could only find one song from the movie that was a Mulan solo, Reflection.

There was a big ruckus about the director originally saying there would be no music in the film, but that's since been revised and apparently it will be a musical. I hope. I really, really hope. The music in Mulan was so fantastic!
But Yifei Liu seems like a great choice, I can't wait to see what she does.

The Live Action trailer has just been released: My initial impression, they've made some changes to the basic storyline I'm uncertain about. The first is the names. Mulan's surname has changed from Fa to Long. I wonder why they thought calling her Dragon was better then Prosper (English translation from Chinese). Shan Yu has been renamed Orichan. Also, for some reason, Mulan now has a sister, in the animated movie, she was an only child. Also, I'm finding it ironic that all of Ariel's sisters got taken away, yet Mulan gained one. No idea if her grandmother appears yet. I don't think Mushu has a role in the movie, it looks like he's been replaced by a non-speaking Phoenix, just from first impressions. That disappoints me most of all, I was looking forward to a witty snarky little dragon in live action. Cricket is still listed as a character though, oddly. And why is there a shapeshifting bird witch? Shan Yu did have a bird in the animated movie, but that was a hunting pet/scout, as in, just an ordinary bird, although a very well trained one. In my personal experience, if they depart too much from the original source material, especially for the sake of special effects/cool fight sequences, then the movie will suffer in quality as a result. Which is what I'm suspecting is happening here, too much flashy, not enough smashy.
