Just saw this headline: www.wtae.com/article/college-singing-group-removes-little-mermaid-song-after-concerns-raised-over-consent/25415404?fbclid=IwAR2pGeWGn4KIbVicnHnJ8N7IG5Kg0rjbBQJhoo6aQgG50gkZDwOrgh1Qgt4What do you all think about this? I think it's a bit out of hand to ban performing a song as harmless as Kiss the Girl, but perhaps advise the group to be a bit more mindful when performing. What really irked me was how they chose to analyze the song. I know I've ranted and raved about this before, but geez enough is enough with attacking The Little Mermaid as "demeaning" to women/men/whoever. I feel like people don't really get the point of these songs if they haven't watched the movie in a long time. There is storytelling going on, subtext, reading between the lines, the lyrics are driving the plot and if you aren't aware of the plot, there's a lot of room to misinterpret. However, the issue of consent in performing arts is a big deal. I think they removed the song moreso because of the way it was being performed, and that I can understand. It's important that all performers are on the same page about boundaries and what they feel they're comfortable/not comfortable with performing or acting out. But banning a whole song and going to mis-analyze it to further prove your point? That seems a bit much to me.

Wow, there are times when I just lose respect for the integrity of humanity's intelligence and this is one of those times.
I've seen the movie and from my perspective, there's nothing submissive about Ariel wanting Eric to kiss her, it's her idea and Sebastian is well aware of this, so he's just helping her get together with Eric. Basically, Ariel's in control of the situation and that means she's actually being rather forward, so if my assessment is correct, it's all about Ariel being confident enough to make the first move when Eric is too shy to do so himself. And honestly, if she wasn't romantically interested in him, then she'd shut him down long ago by simply refusing to spend any time with him at all.
As stated above, it's all about understanding the context of the song, if the audience or the performers don't get it, watch the darn movie. Or at the very least, watch the scene.
I'm not an expert in this matters, but I think if a performer is singing the song, then they should research the source material thoroughly, to understand more thoroughly the context of the song. Otherwise they're just singing a random song with no idea of how to present it properly.
