From TeenVogue: Lea Michele to Star in "The Little Mermaid" at the Hollywood Bowl Thingamabobs? She's got 20! By Gianluca Russo
March 30, 2019 Lea Michele to Star in The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl
Lea Michele is quite the songstress. Of course, this is a widely known fact as we all remember her Glee days portraying theatre aficionado-turned-star Rachel Berry. Upon hearing her sing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked in one of the early episodes, we became instant lifelong stans, though Lea’s theatrical career started much earlier than that. After Glee came to an end following season six (moment of silence please), Lea went on to do much more acting, including a hit role in the series Scream Queens. But for those who have been dying to see Lea belt her face off once again, things are about to feel so much better.
Hold onto your thingamabobs because Lea is headed to the Hollywood Bowl to star as Ariel in The Little Mermaid. According to Broadway World, Lea be diving under the sea for two performances only on May 17 and 18, where she will perform some of the iconic mermaid’s most memorable songs.
Shaking? Same! But who will play Ursula, the baddest witch of the waters who steals Ariel’s voice? None other than Broadway icon Harvey Fierstein, known for his portrayal of Edna Turnblad in the original cast of Hairspray. The production will also star Cheech Marin as Chef Louis, Peter Gallagher as King Triton (hello Sandy Cohen!), Leo Gallo as Prince Eric, and Ken Page as Sebastian.
Honestly, we have so many questions: Will Lea dye her hair red? Will she move around on rollerblades like in the Broadway production? Will Harvey's version of Ursula leave our poor unfortunate souls rendered speechless? Either way, we’re so excited for this production and the many YouTube videos of Lea’s performance that we will be binge-watching for the rest of eternity.

Crazily enough I was able to get a connection to the production and I'm now on the guest list for the rehearsals and show itself! Planning on going May 17th (I'm working a Ball on May 18th, I would've preferred to go then since Jodi /may/ make an appearance that day? that's just my speculation, I know nothing. but May 17th is Howard Ashman's birthday, which for that reason alone will be extra special!). and I'm planning on cosplaying! I've actually never been there before, so I'm really excited! If any of you guys are planning on attending, let me know and we can meet up!

From Los Angeles Daily News: The Hollywood Bowl will transform into a dive-in theater ‘Under the Sea’ with its ‘The Little Mermaid’ live-to-film concert event The two-night special event, held in Los Angeles on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18, will feature celebrity singers including Lea Michele, Harvey Fierstein, Cheech Marin, Peter Gallagher, Ken Page and more.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid,” The Hollywood Bowl is hosting an immersive live-to-film concert event Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18. A full orchestra and a cast of famous actors and singers will perform Alan Menken’s Oscar- and Grammy Award-winning score live while the movie plays on several large screens under the stars.
While the masses attending these shows may already have these songs ingrained enough in their psyches to belt out each and every word along to the film, producers decided to enlist an all-star cast including “Glee” actress and Broadway regular Lea Michele as Ariel; actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein as Ursula; comedian, actor and Mezcal connoisseur Cheeh Marin as Chef Louis; actor, musician and writer Peter Gallagher as King Triton; pop singer Leo Gallo as Prince Eric; and voiceover artist and Broadway star Ken Page will voice the lovable crab, Sebastian.
“I was actually one of the contenders for the original casting of the voice and now I finally get to do it 30 years later,” Page said during a recent phone interview, noting that he’s been practicing the songs for the upcoming show at his hometown theater in Missouri. “These songs are sort of in my DNA somewhere. When you’re doing them to film you can’t just do what you want, you have to stay within certain parameters so it matches the film and to be able to get that into my bones, I’m enjoying doing it. I have the CD in my car, I have the orchestration without the vocals, I have the orchestration with the vocals. I’m doing all of that.”
Actor Ken Page, better known as the voice of Oogie Boogie from “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” will voice the role of Sebastian the crab during Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” Live-to-Film Concert event at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18. (Photo by Vince Bucci, Getty Images)
Each guest star will come out to sing memorable songs from the film including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Part of Your World.” As a bonus, they’ve also added in songs from the Broadway version of “The Little Mermaid” including the song “If Only,” which is a quartet with Ariel, King Triton, Prince Eric and Sebastian.
Though the Hollywood Bowl did present “The Little Mermaid” live-to-film with a three-night live concert event in 2016, concert director Richard Kraft said with the advances in digital mapping and projection technology that he first used in bringing “La La Land” to life at the Bowl in 2017, he and his team, including producer Laura Engel, Tim Fox, Alison Ahart Williams and award-winning creative studio Mousetrappe, could actually visualize creating living scenery for “an evening at the Hollywood Fish Bowl at the Dive-In Theater Under the Sea,” he said.
Kraft and company, along with Live Nation, Disney Concerts and Andrew Hewitt & Bill Silva Presents, began doing the live-to-concert concepts in Los Angeles with composer Danny Elfman and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” back in 2015. They’ve done “Nightmare” three times and also did “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” in 2017 and “Beauty and the Beast” in 2018.
As Kraft explained in a recent phone interview, these events are “… not quite a concert, they’re not quite a film screening and they’re not quite a stage show … they’re more like a theme park experience.” He’s an avid lover of all things Disney and after going to the theme parks he said be began to view the Hollywood Bowl clamshell and its proscenium much like Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at the end of Main Street inside Disneyland.
“The way I see it, the Hollywood Bowl is as iconic to Hollywood as the castle is to a Disney theme park,” he explained. “Disney does these brilliant castle projection shows that celebrate Disney and they do it on top of the greatest surface, the castle, and so we figured you’d celebrate movies at the Hollywood Bowl the same way, with the shell of the bowl as part of the show.”
On top of the music, the film screening and the elaborate projected scenery there will also be aquatically-themed previews of coming attractions, throw-back animated snack commercials and the 1938 Silly Symphony cartoon “Merbabies,” featuring the world premiere of a live original score composed by 17-year-old pianist Emily Bear. “The Little Mermaid” themed costumes are highly encouraged since there is a costume contest and plenty of opportunities for fans to experience unique photo ops all around the venue.
Kraft and Page said they both can’t wait to see what Fierstein does with Ursula’s “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” adding that in many ways they both felt he was born for the role. Kraft said he was also tossing back and forth ideas like “a tennis match on Red Bull” with his team for Chef Louis’ “Les Poissons.”
“We like to tell a good story,” he said. “So what is Chef Louis like 30 years later? We almost went to this fever dream level of having Cheech Marin, who I don’t believe anyone else would think of as a French Chef, do this song with these projections and I realized it was a song about massacring fish. So the direction of the projections was like OK, we’re depicting a serial seafood killer’s mindset and doing it in bold and crazy cartoon colors … what does that look like? I feel like there’s never ‘too much’ going on. I think my ADD is the hallmark of these shows because I get restless very quickly so I realize I didn’t actually throw in the kitchen sink into the Chef Louis song, but it’s not too late, I can still add one.”
Page, who also famously voices Oogie Boogie from “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” said this will be his fifth time performing on the Hollywood Bowl stage and that it never gets old. He’s looking forward to having the audience sing along to the songs as well.
“I think it’s a good thing that without necessarily having to promote it that way, people will be signing along and I think that makes it even more immersive for the audience and they feel even closer to what’s happening on stage,” he said. “(“The Little Mermaid” has) been around for 30 years so that’s at least two, maybe three generations that have seen it and how can you beat that kind of audience enthusiasm?”
Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” Live-to-Film Concert When: 8 p.m. Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18

From Variety: ‘Little Mermaid’ Swims Back Into Hollywood Fishbowl for a Live-Sung Screening Lea Michele and Harvey Fierstein join Richard Kraft's updated show.
It was November 17, 1989 when “The Little Mermaid” splashed into theaters. Its arrival loosed a Disney animation tsunami through the 1990s, resulting in a series of beloved films that are now experiencing a lucrative second life with live-action remakes like “Beauty and the Beast” and this month’s “Aladdin.”
“Mermaid” started it all, a lush underwater fantasia that harkened back to Walt Disney’s animated glory days, but — crucially — armed with a catchy, romantic Broadway score by two musicians with the Midas touch: lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. They gave us instant classics like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World,” and the music won two Oscars.
The film, and Ashman and Menken’s score, will have a special 30th birthday party this weekend at the Hollywood Bowl, in a lavish projection-production with a live orchestra and songs performed by a cast that includes Lea Michele as Ariel, Harvey Fierstein as Ursula and Cheech Marin as Chef Louis.
It’s the brainchild of director Richard Kraft, who has brought similar spectacles to the Bowl in recent years, from the biannual “The Nightmare Before Christmas” with Danny Elfman to “La La Land” to “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” This is the second time he’s brought “Mermaid” to the venue, after a 2016 production that alternated the original voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson, with Sara Bareilles in the lead role, while also featuring Rebel Wilson as Ursula and John Stamos as Louis.
Besides the cast, the big difference this year is that, in the interim, Kraft started working with the Burbank studio Mousetrappe, who developed a way to map custom animated projections onto the Bowl’s shell.
“I love Disney theme parks so much,” says Kraft. “I love how they do projection shows on their castles, and they take an iconic piece of Disneyland and use it as a canvas to put images on, and storytelling via projections. The Hollywood Bowl is this incredibly iconic structure — it’s the castle of Hollywood — and [we’re] using it as a surface to enhance the movie and make it a more immersive experience.”
The conceit for this year’s “Mermaid” is a night at a drive-in theater, cashing in on the similarities. “It’s a communal experience, outdoors, under the stars, watching a movie,” Kraft says. “There’s also a historic, retro quality of being at the Bowl that’s the same as being at a drive-in. But because this is ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Ursula is going to transform all of it into the Hollywood (Fish)Bowl Dive-In Movie Theater” — meaning that, before and throughout the movie, there will be aquatic-themed versions of movie trailers, concession ads and the like.
Kraft, who by day is a film music agent representing the likes of Elfman and Menken, started producing and directing these shows as a midlife lark, largely inspired by a lifelong obsession with all things Disney. Taking a page out of the company’s theme park M.O., it’s not enough anymore for him to simply screen a movie and have a live orchestra playing the score, a type of event that’s become hugely popular at the Bowl and in symphony halls around the world.
“It’s not just, you’re sitting in a chair and when it’s ready they fire up a movie,” he says. “It’s setting a stage, and immersing the audience into an evening that’s about something of which celebrates the movie ‘The Little Mermaid.’ [Which is] 30 years old, and I suspect most of the audience has already seen it. So why are we doing this at the Hollywood Bowl? And that’s what’s exciting: it isn’t just a live-to-film with an orchestra. It isn’t just a movie night. It isn’t just a concert. It isn’t just a stage production. It’s this hybrid, where the closest I can call it is an ‘experience.’”
With each project, Kraft and Mousetrappe have become more ambitious with the animation on the Bowl’s shell. Rather than repeating characters already on screen, Kraft calls it “living scenery” that can reveal unseen aspects of the story. For example, Ursula’s big number, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” will be attended by German expressionism — “because the song that Alan Menken and Howard Ashman wrote was very Kurt Weill,” Kraft says. “It’s like, oh, well, Ursula is a singer in a German cabaret, and the visual influences pull from imagery suggested by German masters as well as Salvador Dali. I think Ursula would collect Dali.”
For Chef Louis’ song, “Les Poissons,” Marin will be surrounded by animation inspired by Kraft’s realization that, basically, the character is “an aquatic serial killer. So the visual was referencing like a Tex Avery cartoon — big, bold colors — of what would be inside the mind of a homicidal French chef who loves destroying crustaceans. So it is insane. Because if you think about it, filleting fish is not that far removed from ‘Silence of the Lambs.’”
Disney has to okay all such flights of fancy, but Kraft says that, because he’s such an uber-fan and now has several of these productions under his belt, he knows what not to do.
His only fear is that “I murder something because I’m giving it such a big, loving hug,” he says — “that I’m a clumsy galoot who kills it. And, so far, I don’t think I’ve smothered any of my favorite things with too much love. But maybe one day I shall…”
Menken, who is scoring Disney’s upcoming Rob Marshall-directed remake of “The Little Mermaid” — and is about to start writing new songs with Lin-Manuel Miranda — will appear at the piano for an encore. He’ll be flying in that day from a press junket in Japan to promote the new “Aladdin,” directed by Guy Ritchie, which he scored and also penned new songs for with “La La Land” lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
“It was a real reminder,” Kraft says, “that everything Alan touches ends up having so many children and grandchildren. We’re talking about ‘Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin,’ and it’s like I have to remember: are we talking about the original movie, or are we talking about the Broadway show, or are we talking about the touring show, are we talking about the concert, or are we talking about the live-action remake?”
As for live-to-picture events, Kraft wants to keep making them even crazier.
“I think we’re in a new era where [you think about] what does it mean to go see a movie, and what does it mean to have a concert experience of a film?” he says. “The boundaries of it just keep exploding. A few years ago it was just enough to go see a movie and hear the orchestra playing it live. But I think many people, of which I’m just one of them, are now going: No, this is its own art form, and how far can we take it?”

From Billboard: 'The Little Mermaid' Transforms the Hollywood 'Fish Bowl' With Help From Lea Michele & More for 30th Anniversary
Nostalgia was in the air on Friday night (May 17) as people of all ages flooded into the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles for The Little Mermaid's 30th anniversary celebration.
The live-to-film experience featured Glee's Lea Michele as Ariel, Mrs. Doubtfire's Harvey Fierstein as Ursula and Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong as the lobster-loving Chef Louis.
Accompanied by the "hot crustacean" orchestra, led by conductor Michael Kosarin, the beloved Disney film played in the background as concertgoers dressed as Ariel, Sebastian, Prince Eric and even evil Vanessa smiled bright as swayed along to the live performances of timeless tunes like "Kiss the Girl," "Part of Your World" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls."
The whole event felt particularly wistful, as the venue was transformed into the "Hollywood (Fish) Bowl Dive-In Theatre." Complete with 1950s animated snack bar advertisements, a couple sitting in an old school convertible on stage and punny previews for other Disney classics including The Sea-Lion King and Oysters, Inc., it truly felt like the good old days. Before the feature presentation, members of the audience participated in a costume contest, and the ultimate prize went to an adorable pair of siblings dressed as the mermaid princess and her crabby sidekick. The diversity in age, color, shape and size of the audience spoke volumes to the effect Disney, and The Little Mermaid in particular, has had on everyone's childhood.
A stand-out moment of the night was Ken Page, best known to Disney fans as Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas, and his lively performance as Sebastian for "Under the Sea." Before delving into the fun, he told the crowd that he actually auditioned for the role 30 years ago.
"Since then I have wanted to sing his wonderful songs again," Page said in a press statement. "One of the biggest treats is that it will be 'live!' That's always a happy place for me. The fact that I'm returning to Hollywood Bowl for my fifth appearance is yet another reason for 'happiness.' What great fun this will be!"
It was hard to believe Page didn't get the role, given how jovially he belted the cherished lyrics as a line of dancers salsa-danced behind him and turned the stage into an aquatic party to say the least. His performance was met by roaring cheers from the crowd.
The fun continues for a second night tonight (May 18) at the Hollywood Bowl. Find tickets here.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to update, but I actually was able to make it out to LA for this! I even had time to audition for Disney! (didn't get booked this time, these were my first auditions in years and I was just really happy for the experience!) AND I visited Disneyland for the first time ever! I should probably make a post about all that somewhere else... But anyway, the main reason I was there was because the producer/director of this event invited me to come watch the dress rehearsal (he also invited me to the show itself, but I couldn't attend due to some major conflicts back home I couldn't skip out on). I have only a few videos and pictures from the dress rehearsal (it was the night before the first show) but I was sitting right in the front, there weren't many people in the audience so it was a really special treat! I got to meet several members of the cast and crew (Cheech Marin and Peter Gallagher, to name a few!) AND I got a book of mine signed by ALAN MENKEN! The book, if you're curious, is the The Little Mermaid: A Broadway Musical: From the Deep Blue Sea to the Great White Way (A Disney Theatrical Souvenir Book), and you can find it on Amazon if you're interested!

Lea Michele’s reaction to Lindsay Lohan’s shady comment about her playing Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid’ at the Hollywood Bowl is hilariously epic! She explained on ‘WWHL’ why she’s happy Lindsay spoke out!
Lea Michele had the best reaction to those who believe she’s feuding with Lindsay Lohan. While on Watch What Happens Live on December 19, a caller phoned in and asked Lea about Lindsay’s comment she made after news that Lea was cast to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl. “I know, I saw that!” Lea, 33, replied. “It was very interesting.”
WWHL host Andy Cohen chimed in an admitted that he didn’t know the story, and asked what happened. Lea explained, “They announced that I was playing Ariel at the Hollywood Bowl and I think she wrote like, ‘What?’ Or something…I find it to be an honor, truly,” Lea admitted, to which Andy asked, “To be shaded by Lindsay Lohan?”
“Yes! It’s classic, classic,” Lea admitted. “Because, obviously, like it’s at the Hollywood Bowl, I’m not like, you know, but it was great.” She added, “I’m down with it,” Lea added. “Of course!” So, there’s no bad blood there!
If you’re in the same boat as Andy, then you may have missed Lindsay’s reaction to the The Little Mermaid casting news. Earlier this year, the Mean Girls star, 33, took to Instagram to react to the Glee alum’s new role as Ariel at the Hollywood Bowl. Lindsay replied, “Huh?” to an Instagram post announcing Lea’s new gig at the time. Many fans assumed that Lindsay was throwing shade because she’s previously said that playing Ariel would be a “dream role” for her.
Lea clearly wants no part of any feud narrative. Not to mention, she wouldn’t have much time to entertain any type of rift either. The singer just kicked off her three-night residency at the Concert Hall for the NY Society of Ethical Culture on Thursday, December 19 in New York City. She will perform songs from her new holiday album Christmas in the City during her holiday shows.

From People: Lea Michele Says It's 'an Honor' to Be Shaded by Lindsay Lohan: 'I'm Down with It'
In April, Lindsay Lohan voiced her confusion after Lea Michele was announced to play Ariel in a Hollywood Bowl production of The Little Mermaid

Lea Michele is more than okay with a little attention from Lindsay Lohan, whether it’s good or bad.
While appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on Thursday night, the Glee actress, 33, was asked how she reacted back in April when Lohan, 33, threw shade at Michele’s casting as Ariel in a Hollywood Bowl production of The Little Mermaid.
“It was very interesting,” Michele said with a good-natured smile. “I find it to be an honor, truly.”
“It’s classic, classic,” she added. “It was great — I’m down with it, of course!”
When news broke in the spring of Michele’s casting as the lead red-headed mermaid, Lohan didn’t seem on board with a natural brunette taking on the role.
“Huh?” she wrote under an Instagram post that announced the news.
Lohan, of course, has previously expressed her desire to portray the famous Disney princess — and she already has a certain Oscar-winning actress in mind as her preferred Ursula.
Sharing a photo of the original film on her Instagram Story in 2018 — and tagging Disney Pictures Film — she wrote, “My dream role with Meryl Streep.”
The Hollywood Bowl staging of the musical was held for two nights in May. The Los Angeles show also starred Harvey Fierstein (Ursula), Ken Page (Sebastian), Peter Gallagher (King Triton) and Leo Gallo (Prince Eric).
This year also saw a live telecast of The Little Mermaid on ABC, which featured Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel. Additionally, Disney announced plans for a live-action reimagining of the film, set for the big screen with singer Halle Bailey in the title role.
