Before the latest Disney live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid hits theaters, Elle Fanning recalls a darker version she almost starred in.
Back in 2014, Elle Fanning got the chance of becoming a Disney princess in the live-action adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, where she played Aurora. Under the title of Maleficent, the movie retold the animated classic focusing on the villain, played by Angelina Jolie.
She did it once again in 2019 in the sequel, Maleficent: Queen of Evil, and she almost played another princess but in a very different project. Now that The Little Mermaid is getting its live-action adaptation, coming to theaters next week, speaking with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Fanning recalls the unmade version she almost starred with director Joe Wright at the helm of the project:
“Joe Wright and I were supposed to do the Little Mermaid. It was with Working Title and it was going to be the “She Turns Into Foam” version. Very dark. Very musical. Very theatrical like he does. I won that part. He made me sing in my audition. It wasn’t a song, like the lines. So I went in and read the lines and did the scene but then he said, ‘Now I want you to sing all the lines.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ And so I did and then he gave it to me in the room. But that was very exciting because it was like, we’re going to do it, and then it just didn’t work out.”
The actress also mentioned that the movie was not only ambitious about the story they wanted to tell, but also because of the budget they needed to create the world under the sea, similar to what James Cameron did with Avatar:
“I think the budget was going to be astronomical because it was the first time they were going to film underwater. He had this whole plan of how it was going to be. What was it, Pan, when Cara Delevingne did mermaid work? He ended up using that technology on Pan with the mermaids. But [The Little Mermaid] just fell apart so you’re like, ‘Oh well, that’s done.’”
The Real Story of The Little Mermaid
In Christensen's tale, the Little Mermaid saves a prince from a shipwreck, but when he is left on the beach he is helped by another woman. Desperate to meet him again, the protagonist goes to a witch who grants her the chance to return to the surface in exchange for his voice, but assuring her that she will not be able to return to the sea, and that if the prince does not fall in love with her she will turn into foam.
The mermaid manages to find her loved one, who welcomes her into his castle and they establish a relationship, but when he finds the woman who helped him after being rescued, he marries the latter. Hopeless, the mermaid decides to surrender to the ocean, but her sisters appear to inform her that they’ve exchanged their long hair for a spell that would cause a strong storm and throw the prince and his new bride into the sea.
However, true to her love for him, the mermaid refuses and finally commits herself to her tragic destiny. Before her act of love and compassion, the wind gods grant him a place in paradise to rest for all eternity.
