A star from the live-action version of The Little Mermaid has announced that their first child has been born, much to the joy of fans and friends everywhere.

Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid brought the magic of the original 1989 Alan Menken and Howard Ashman classic to live-action, largely with the help of its phenomenal cast. This included Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as the Sea Witch Ursula, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
Although it never hit the same heights as previous live-action remakes like The Lion King (2019) and Aladdin (2019), the film was still one of Disney’s most successful movies in 2023, eventually becoming the eighth highest-grossing film at the box office and elevating the cast to superstar status. This includes Daveed Diggs, who welcomed a new baby with his partner, Emmy Raver-Lampman.

Daveed Diggs, an actor known for his Tony Award-winning performance in Hamilton (2015) and for playing Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, who stars as Allison Hargraves in the Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, announced that they were pregnant on September 26, 2023. Now, almost six months later, they revealed that the baby had been born in an adorable (and relatable) joint Instagram announcement.
“Dear baby, you have forever changed us. our hearts are filled with a kind of love we never thought possible. We love you more than you will truly ever know. Thank you for choosing us. Now please… go the f— to sleep. Love, mom and dad.”

Diggs echoed the sentiment in a comment, saying, “Shout out to [Adam Mansbach] for writing the realest children’s book of all time,” referring to the parental classic Go the F— To Sleep (2011), which was a New York Times best-seller and read in audio form by Samuel L. Jackson.
Fans and celebrities celebrated with the couple. Diggs’ Little Mermaid co-star Halle Bailey, who gave birth to a baby boy earlier this year, said, “Congratulations! Love you!” Hamilton alum Joshua Henry, who played Gaston in the live television version of Beauty and the Beast (2022), said, “Wow!!! Congratulations to you and [Daveed Diggs]!! The sleep will come.”

BY ALEXANDRA DEL ROSARIOSTAFF WRITER MARCH 8, 2024 9:16 AM PT Facebook Twitter Show more sharing options Halle Bailey admitted that keeping her pregnancy private was a matter of self-preservation — for herself, for her family and for the “biggest joy” of her life.
“The Little Mermaid” and “Color Purple” singer-actor explained why she and rapper DDG kept their baby news quiet and off social media for months. The couple welcomed their son Halo in January.
While receiving an award at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood ceremony on Thursday, the 23-year-old said that “there was no way in he** I was gonna share the biggest joy of my world with anyone,” according to video shared by the Hollywood Reporter.
She continued: “Halo was my gift — he is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me or my family to that unyielding spotlight.”
Bailey and DDG, 26, sparked pregnancy speculation back in September 2023 when Page Six reported that the Chloe x Halle singer avoided the spotlight and was “very mindful in the way she gave hugs” at the MTV Video Music Awards. After pregnancy rumors spread, Bailey’s social media followers seemingly began paying closer attention to her every move, and her social media posts.
In the fall of 2023, fans speculated that the singer was doctoring her Instagram pictures, including those of her and DDG’s Halloween costumes and those from the “Color Purple” premiere in Los Angeles. Obviously, her fans were eager to know more about Bailey’s pregnancy.
“Welcome to the world my halo 🥰👼🏽 ✨,” she captioned the Instagram post announcing Halo’s arrival, “the world is desperate to know you 😉🤣♥️”
Since welcoming their first child together, Halle and DDG — who began dating in 2022 — have opened up about their decision to shut social media out. While responding to Snapchat fans in January, Bailey said she wanted to ensure she had a “beautiful, private, healthy time in my journey.”
In a January vlog, DDG (real name Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) joked about the internet sleuths who looked into his girlfriend’s pregnancy.
“A lot of y’all should quit your jobs and start looking into detective work,” he said, “‘cause y’all [would] do pretty good at it.”

Halle Bailey decided she had “no obligation” to share her pregnancy with the world.
The 23-year-old star revealed in December that she had welcomed son Halo with rapper DDG - whose real name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jnr - but had kept the news that she was even expecting to herself. She has now admitted there was “no way in he**” she was ever going to share her “biggest joy” on such a large scale.
Speaking at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards, she said: “We are black women in entertainment, and although we signed up for the challenges of the spotlight, in this current climate, that spotlight burns brighter, hotter, and uninterrupted, whereas the scrutiny of its magnification leaves no concealment. I’ve learned from that spotlight over the past eight years.
”I’ve also, if I’m being honest, been burned by it, too, as we all have.
”There was no way in he** I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that.”

The Little Mermaid actress then blamed the “state of the world” and hinted that the magnitude of social media was behind her reasoning to keep things private.
She said: “With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for da** sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world.”
She captioned her Instagram post: “Even though we’re a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me was bring me my son. Welcome to the world my Halo [love, baby and star emojis] the world is desperate to know you [wink, laughing face and heart emojis]”

Chloe and Halle Bailey have a bond that can't be broken -- which is probably why the older sibling here says it was no issue keeping her little sister's pregnancy a secret.
We caught up with sister duo at Essence mag's pre-Oscar gala on Thursday -- and Halle couldn't help but blush and gush about her newborn baby boy Halo, whom she shares with boyfriend DDG ... who was enjoying fatherhood as we spoke with Mama Bear.
Just check out the video DDG threw up recently ... showing him goofing around with the kid.
Anyway, back to Halle -- our photog asked if Halle's musical talents have transferred over to the baby just yet ... and based on her reaction, it sounds like it might be too early to tell.
So, instead ... we lobbed her a softball, asking how motherhood was going -- and HB told us it was great. Chloe, however, gave us a little more insight into her sister's pregnancy ... which sorta flew under the radar (although, not really).
Nonetheless, we asked Chloe if was difficult keeping everything under wraps for Halle -- and she told us it was actually a breeze. Halle herself addressed this as well during her remarks at the event ... and said she had no obligation to share her pregnancy with the world.
DDG echoed her sentiments to us recently -- saying he didn't cave to social media pressure nor did he feel the need to. Good on them.

Halle Bailey opened up about her pregnancy while onstage at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards on Thursday (March 7) in Los Angeles.
If you were unaware, the 23-year-old Little Mermaid actress revealed that she had welcomed her first child – a baby boy named Halo – with boyfriend DDG earlier this year. The couple kept her pregnancy a secret, only sharing the news after she’d given birth.
She touched on her decision to keep the news private during the ceremony, which was hosted at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
In a video that is currently going viral on X (formerly Twitter), Halle described her baby as “the biggest joy.”
“What was one of the biggest highlights of my life, and to be real, one of the biggest challenges, too, cannot compare to the biggest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mom to my perfect little angel Halo,” she said. “These lessons, some hard, that I’ve shared with you today, led me to a place of protection. There was no way in he** I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone.”
She continued, saying, “Halo was my gift. he is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me or my family to that unyielding spotlight.
Her sentiment was met with loud cheers from the audience.
Halle attended the event with sister and Chloe x Halle bandmate Chloe Bailey.
If you missed it, DDG recently addressed a rumor about the pregnancy. The singer recently shared some before and after photos documenting her exciting journey to motherhood.

Halle Bailey is sharing the many reasons why she decided to keep her pregnancy private.
The singer and actress, 23, was one of four honorees at Thursday's 2024 ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards. During her acceptance speech, Bailey reflected on her career and the birth of her son Halo, whom she quietly welcomed last year.
"We are Black women in entertainment, and although we signed up for the challenges of the spotlight, in this current climate, that spotlight burns brighter, hotter, and uninterrupted, whereas the scrutiny of its magnification leaves no concealment," she told the room.
"I've learned from that spotlight over the past eight years. I've also, if I'm being honest, been burned by it, too, as we all have," she said, referencing the racist backlash she faced following the announcement she'd been cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
The role changed her life, but, she continued, "it cannot compare to the biggest joy of my life. And that was becoming a mom to my perfect little angel Halo." The star became tearful as she explained why she chose to keep her pregnancy private, a decision that came from "a place of protection."

"There was no way in he** I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone. Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that," she shared.
She opted for privacy during her pregnancy in part due to "the state of the world."
"With the state of the world and the place it is in with men trying to force their will on our bodies, no one on social media, and for da** sure, no one on the planet, was going to tell me what to do with my body or what to share with the world," she said.

Last year the "Do It" singer kept quiet about her pregnancy with boyfriend DDG until announcing the birth of their first baby in an Instagram post in January. During her Essence speech she said she was supported in her decision and inspired by "some of the strong women in my life."
"Do y'all remember when Prince Z David Marley [Zion David Marley], who came from a queen named Lauryn Hill, entered the world? Do you remember how private Beyoncé was about her pregnancy? We have that right," she said. "Every woman in the world has that right to choose what to do with their bodies and what to share with anyone or everyone."
Wiping away tears as she spoke, the star ended her remarks with words of gratitude. "So thank you. Thank you to some of the strong women in my life, like my beautiful sisters standing here on the stage with me for setting examples in resilience, confidence, and independence," she said.
