Since we've all watched "The Little Mermaid" 95,103,994+ times, our eyes have probably wandered from the characters to the backgrounds. So an obscure question popped into my head: which settings and backgrounds in TLM did you most like?
I loved the two shots of Eric's palace, like the one at dawn before the tour of the kingdom and the one at night before Eric makes the decision to marry Ariel. The ocean sparkles and the lighting is so nice that it makes me want to jump right in and live there. I'd probably just get smacked with the TV screen if I tried, so I'll just watch...
I wish we'd seen more of Ariel's grotto, too. I agree with what was said on the commentary--if TLM could be done over again, I'd give more exposure to all of Ariel's treasures.
I'm probably going to spam my love of "Kiss the Girl" over the course of my stay at this forum, but I guess I'm not alone. I love Ariel and Eric's little moment under the willow tree, with all the fireflies and the rich blue lighting. The surrounding willow leaves really emphasizes how close they are, and I can't help the warm fuzzies when I watch that part. ^^

Well, I would have to say Ariels Grotto, and when Ariel sang the last part of 'part of your world' when she was on the rock, and the waves hit. That part pretty much captivated me and does everytime I see it.

My favorite background is also my favorite entrance in any Disney movie; when Ariel pops on screen for the first time and points out the sunken ship to flounder (among the many other sunken ships). >> hq55.com/cap/lm/mermaid58.jpg << The bubbels that rise and the way the lighting changes is great, and the music is great (the score is incredible) but if you look closely on the left side you see a school of silver fish swimming past...that with the fright on flounder's face and the sheer wonderment on Ariel's, you've got pure Disney magic. I also love the backgrounds inside Ursula's lair as the colors are so beautiful, the purples and pinks and black, real gothic And who can forget that beautiful ariel shot after Ariel surfaces and the camera goes over the water and up to show Eric's castle before sunset. I love how the water sparkles and mirrors the sky above so wonderfully.

Oh, I agree! I love looking at all the details in the ship scene. This took me forever to notice, but I've become obsessed with it: Eric's kingdom is practically on a mountain. What a view!

Mine would be just like Dans. Also when she is on the rock picking a flower. I have a lot but another one would be when she is putting a flower in King Triton's hair.

That would be the coolest kingdom to live in! I remember on the dvd they mention how his castle's style is based on houses in Italy with the white walls and terra cotta roofs as they look relaly warm andd welcoming, maybe that's why there are a lot of palm trees in his kingdom, too. Reminds me of towns like the one in the first POTC movie.

You're thinking of Port Royal in POTC. That's actually a real place, in the Carribean.

That's it european colonies in tropical places was what I ment. I've always liked the fact that Disney doesn't really set an exact location but morphs a few inspirations together to form new places.

Well, the reason there was a European colony there was because it was in the early 1700s, back when England controlled most of the existant west, as in, America wasn't even it's own country yet. England set up shop in the carribean, which helped their East India Trading company, which is in the movie.
So, in conclusion, it isn't really a 'new' place. It was very real back then.

I ment with cartoon movies like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin etc where the kingdom they live in is kind of a mesh of different, real places. Not just the kingdoms but the charaaters, clothing, 'prop's and whatnot. POTC can be considered a fantasy period piece with an exact year in mind as well as fitting costumes, look, etc.

Spain, Sardinia, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, and the Camargue region in France are among a few of the known locations in Europe where they can be found in the wild. I can't find out where it's exact location is, but considering how Atlantica is near Iceland (according to the second movie, at least), as well as the short amount of time between Atlantica and... well, whatever Eric's Kingdom is supposed to be, it's somewhere between Denmark and Portugal. For the topic at hand, I don't really have a "Favorite" (not that I care to have one, anyways, because I just simply hate favorites.), but I did find the underwater world to be fascinating.

Well... let's see... The Atlantica castle (One of the best castles). The rock from the POYW Reprise. The reef/rock where Sebastian sings UTS is it really a reef?. Ariel's Grotto. Every time when I think about The Little Mermaid I always want to see more colorful corals and etc. and more of the Atlantica castle, also reminds that there's no reef in the movie or in story beside the film like in the TV series and sequels.

I always loved Ursula's Lair. When I first saw her home in the remains of the Leviathan, I just went 'Woha!' I think the backgrunds in her lair are so cool, some might call them simple, but I love them The mirror, the caldroun, everything. Also I love the Wedding Ship with Vanessa. Again, simpe, but beautiful at the same time.

Theres a lot of character to it, especially with the opening shot of the shell and all the pink seaweed. I really love the effects with the pink smoke from the outside, they did an incredible job making everyone love to hate her

Ariel's Grotto is my favorite location.
One reason I like it is because it's totally personallized by Ariel, it's her place and hers alone.
The contrast of light and dark was also nice, from a visual point of view.
The edges of the room are cloaked in shadow and are mysterious, then you have this bright area in the middle.
