I remember something called Shelly Duvals Fairy Tales, and in that version, the sea witch mentioned she used to be the queens bridge partner.

Yes, I do recall this from the DVD set when I was indulging in my extras watching spree.
The question is, it is accepted as canon or disregarded because it didn't make it to the final version of the film?
Personally, I think it would have added an extra edge to Ursula if she was plotting against her closest relatives.

This is very interesting. In the final version, Ursula does say that she used to live in the palace and in the earlier version of Poor Unfortunate Souls, Ariel says that Ursula tried to overthrow her father... no mention of them being related, though.
Do you think that the 'aunt' subplot was abandoned from the TLM movie or was created for the Broadway show?

It was considered in the original script; but like many other things it was scrapped.
