Do you know that song that was cut from TLM called 'Silence is Golden'? Well, it's not too long and it doesn't add much about Ursula's back story, but I really like it. Not as much as I like Poor Unfortunate Souls, but then again, I grew up with that! What I like about that song is Ursula's insistence that being silent is the best thing that could happen to Ariel, as if she's doing her a favor by taking her voice. And that verse "Remember, you'll get the legs and the lungs and prince, all I get is the voice" sounds like a supermarket add (3 for the price of one). I'd like to read about your thoughts on this song. Here it is, if you want to refresh your memory:

I Love This song!!! But not as much as Poor Unfortunate Souls though.
I think this song is very majestic and conceiving.

I've always liked this and relished finally hearing this on the "Music Behind the Magic" soundtrack. Sh does sound a bit more salesman in it. It was replaced because they wanted to make clear what happens after three days. Real "deal with the devil" stuff. Of course, being an early version, I think Ariel gives in a little too eagerly.
Just as interesting is the cut verses in "Poor Unfortunate Souls" (half of which resurface on the Platinum DVD sung by Pat Carrol), which I love dearly. Then there's the alternate, more defeatist reprise to "Part of Your World" (with such lines as "I'd give my life! I'd sell my soul, 'cause I can feel I'll never be whole!")

I wish the cut verses in 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' could've been there. I don't think it takes anything away from the song.
The earlier version of the reprise of 'Part of Your World' gave too much of the story away. I think it benefited with the change.
The song I really regret not being in the movie is 'Her Voice'. I think that song is amazing! After seeing the Broadway show, I can't help but wonder what the movie would've turned out with that song in it... Oh, now we'll never know...

I love the verses too, but there's time and budget aspects to consider. The Ashman version is incredibly fun to listen to anyway.
The earlier version had some nice foreshadowing with it, but what strikes me is how much darker it is. Not surprising it would be changed.
"Her Voice" and "If Only" are about the only broadway songs I found myself liking, and I'd hate to see either of them in the film, ala BatB or Lion King DVD. They have nothing to do with the production, and while I can see the want of an Eric song, his dwelling on it comes through just fine without it. Adding Human Again was a nice touch given the song's history, but these two would make as much sense as how they put in "The Morning Report". I'm still puzzled on that one.

The only song that should be added is one that Ashman wrote for Eric.
