Here's mine:
I was not yet born when the movie released, I was about a year old for the rerelease but I wasn't living in the US at the time. While I lived abroad in Turkey, my family got me into Disney movies and we had cassettes and vhs's of Disney songs and sing-a-longs given to us by family and friends. I had one in particular that I think was called "The Circle of Life" (after The Lion King) and had tons of Disney songs in it, one being Part of Your World. My parents tell me that whenever I heard that song as a young child, I'd just go into this trance and I'd be absolutely enraptured by the visuals and the gorgeous music. Some things don't change I guess! That was my intro to TLM. Don't remember specifically when I first saw the full film, I must've been probably 5 and living in the US now. I had a phase where I rejected things deemed "girly" for a while and I kind of fell out of Disney princesses. Until middle school where we had a project to tell a modern retelling of a fairy tale, mine was The Little Mermaid (the original Andersen story). I read it and instantly felt a connection. I rewatched the Disney film with a newfound appreciation, and thus the obsession began for real. This was right around the time the Broadway musical came out, and it really inspired me to go into theatre. Part of Your World was the first song I had the courage to sing in front of a large crowd on a stage. It helped me overcome stage fright and audition anxiety. I did a lot of research on the film and the original story and discovered LAF in the process. I've been a member since I was probably 12 or 13, now I'm 19 and pursuing a Vocal Music degree in college. That honestly wouldn't have happened if not for rediscovering The Little Mermaid. I was on track to either study law or become a concert pianist, but theatre and choir really pulled me in once I got over my fear of singing out loud.
There's so much more to my story, I didn't even get to how the movie changed my life in other ways and the bullies I dealt with along the way and sooooo much more, but I'd really like to hear your stories!
