I just watched this episode of Once Upon A Time and am quite disappointed with the subplot.
For those unfamiliar with the show, they sometimes insert flashbacks to the fairytale world of the past which tells a story that is motivating the present plot points.
Given the title of this episode and the fact Ariel was listed as a character (she's been in several episodes so far), I was expecting this to be a Little Mermaid themed story.
The episode opens with the distinctive melody we hear when Ariel's voice is captured in the shell by Ursula.
So I was quite surprised to discover it wasn't Ariel singing, but Ursula!
The subplot that extracts the plot points from the first movie, overprotective authoritian father (Poseidon), dead mother (killed by humans), shell that takes her voice.
How did they honestly think ripping Ariel's backstory away from her and transferring it to Ursula was a good idea?
Up till this episode, although there were some key differences, the plot has been basically the same as we know, so I was quite surprised to find out it had been completely subverted this way.
As for Ariel's appearance in the episode, it's limited to rescuing Hook after Ursula throws him into the water to drown and bringing Poseidon to reconcile with his estranged daughter (in this show, mermaids have the power to travel between dimensions).
And to add to my confusion, Ursula is not the actual Ursula, she's just named after her.
Plus, she's a benevolent sea goddess, not an evil sea witch.
Her only appearance in the series was in a flashback where Regina pretended to be her, which offended the real Ursula greatly, as Regina was tricking both Ariel and Snow White in while impersonating her.
This is how that scene played out:
Ursula: Hello, Regina.
Regina: You. You're real?
Ursula's tentacles seize Regina and wrap around her tightly
Ursula: Next time you claim to be me, you'll find out just how real I am.
Ursula squeezes hard, causing Regina great pain.
Ursula: Don't ever do that again.
She withdraws her tentacles, releasing Regina.
