From Inside The Magic: Disney May Cast Kacey Musgraves in ‘Little Mermaid’ Remake
in Disney, Movies
Posted on July 23, 2020 by TJ Muscaro
As time goes by, we are learning more and more about Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the animated classic The Little Mermaid.
So far, it looks like we know who is going to play Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian, Flounder, and Scuttle. And now it appears that we now know who Disney wants to play Ursula’s gorgeous alter-ego, Vanessa.
According to the Disinsider, Disney has reportedly had Zoom meetings with Grammy-award-winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves in the hopes she will be playing the would-be femme-fatal that sabotages Ariel’s chances of getting Eric to kiss her before the sunsets on the third day. However, there is no word what progress those Zoom calls have made.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is set to start filming in London this summer with Rob Marshall (Mary Poppins Returns, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) directing. The cast includes Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jonah-Hauer King (Prince Eric), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and Awkwafina (Scuttle). It is also set to include new original songs from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
If Musgraves joins the cast, it will not be her first experience working with Disney. She already recorded her own version of “All Is Found” for Disney’s Frozen II soundtrack as well as a cover of “A Spoon of Full Sugar” from Mary Poppins.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is just the latest of a large collection of Disney remakes, following Mulan and preceding the Peter Pan remake, Peter and Wendy. These remakes have been met with mixed opinions from fans.
Only time will tell who gets one of the remaining roles, and if Disney will be able to begin filming in London.

From ScreenRant: Disney’s Live-Action Little Mermaid Eye Kacey Musgraves For Key Role Kacey Musgraves is in talks with Disney to play Vanessa, Ursula's human form, in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
BY NATALIE HUNTER 2 HOURS AGO
Kacey Musgraves is reportedly in talks with Disney to play the role of Ursula's human form, Vanessa, in the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid. The 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid quickly became a household favorite. Audiences fell in love with Ariel as she joins the human world and finds love with Prince Eric. The Little Mermaid is undoubtedly one of Disney's more beloved classics. It's as timeless as it is adored having been made into a Broadway show, a live televised production on ABC, and now will be made into the highly-anticipated live-action feature.
Disney's The Little Mermaid live-action film was set to begin filming in March 2020. However, Disney put a hold on filming for The Little Mermaid and several other productions that were already in the process of filming due to COVID-19 precautions. Since the production will likely not make its initial 2021 release date, the creative team has been hard at work embellishing the film. Composer Alan Menken enlisted Lin-Manuel Miranda to help him compose and record four new songs. All of the movie's vocal tracks, both new and old, have already been recorded.
Musgraves is the latest possible addition to The Little Mermaid's all-star cast. The Disinsider confirmed the country singer-songwriter had Zoom meetings with Disney in regards to the movie. While it is confirmed Disney has offered her a role in the production, it is not certain which role that is or whether she has accepted it. However, she was likely offered the role of Vanessa. Ursula transforms into a human named Vanessa in an attempt to stop Ariel from attaining her true love's kiss, thus lifting the curse. Musgraves' representatives have yet to comment on her possible casting.
Musgraves would be one of many A-listers to join the cast of The Little Mermaid. Halle Bailey will play Ariel despite some of the racial backlash directed towards her. Additionally, Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Javier Bardem (King Triton), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and Awkwafina (Scuttle) round out this star-stacked cast. While Harry Styles was initially rumored to play the dreamy Prince Erice, Styles ultimately turned down the role, and Disney has given newcomer Jonah Hauer-King his chance to shine in the role. Should Musgraves accept the role, she would be in good company.
Disney has been notorious for using big names to bring in big bucks. Sometimes this works in its favor, other times not so much. When a celebrity has a strong acting background, the payoff is often very satisfying. However, when Disney casts singers in acting roles, there has been criticism. For instance, many were not a fan of Beyonce's acting performance as Nala in the live-action The Lion King. Fortunately, Musgraves' role is not a big-heavy acting role and gets to sing the Poor Unfortunate Souls reprise, so she has more to gain than lose with this role.

Here's a video of Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric) talking about the audition process for the film as well as his life and career. He also gave a big thank you to Harry Styles for turning down the role.

From Movieweb: Disney's The Little Mermaid Remake Goes After Grammy Winner Kacey Musgraves The studio has reportedly had several discussions with Kacey Musgraves regarding a role in the upcoming live-action remake.
JON FUGE — July 24, 2020 in CASTING NEWS
Following a halt in production, the Disney live-action remakes are now pressing ahead, with the studio gearing up to return to one of their major projects, The Little Mermaid, with a big casting addition. Disney have reportedly had several virtual chats with Grammy Award winner Kacey Musgraves, with the studio wanting her for a part in the upcoming remake. The role they have in mind for Musgraves is that of Vanessa, the human form taken by the sea witch Ursula when she makes her way onto dry land to continue her devious plan.
Whilst there has been no confirmation that she has signed on to the role, visually Kacey Musgraves looks almost exactly like the character in the beloved 1989 animated version, with fans on social media having suggested this casting idea for some time.
Much like the rest of the Disney live-action remakes, The Little Mermaid will likely follow the original movie closely, and follow a mermaid named Ariel who makes a deal with Ursula, a sea witch, to meet Eric, a human prince she falls in love with. However, unaware of Ursula's evil plans, Ariel ends up in trouble when her voice is taken away in exchange for a pair of human legs in place of her mermaid tale. Production on the remake was halted amid the ongoing global situation but will reportedly start up again this summer at Pinewood Studios in London.
The movie has amassed quite the cast, with Halle Bailey (Last Holiday, Grown-ish) taking on the role of Ariel. Other cast members for the movie include Jacob Tremblay (Room) as Flounder, Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting) as Sebastian, Awkwafina (Ocean's Eight) as the seagull Scuttle, and Jonah Hauer-King (Little Women) as Prince Eric. Bridesmaids and The Heat star Melissa McCarthy will play the underwater version of Ursula, and it has been rumored that Skyfall actor Javier Bardem in in talks to play Ariel's father King Triton.
Rob Marshall, whose previous credits include the likes of [Chicago}, Mary Poppins Returns, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tide will be directing The Little Mermaid for Disney.
The movie's Oscar-winning composer, Alan Menken, has already revealed that The Little Mermaid remake will include four new songs that he crafted together with Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda. "This has been a great time for writing. Production stopped on The Little Mermaid movie. We recorded all the songs, and I wrote four new songs with Lin-Manuel Miranda, the lyricist for Mermaid. And I'm working on Disenchanted, the sequel to Lin-Manuel Miranda. And I have another Broadway show. Oh, and Hercules is coming to the stage, of course. We did that in Central Park last summer. Just a whole bushel of new projects."
At present, The Little Mermaid live-action remake is scheduled to be released in theaters next year on November 19, 2021. However, it is unclear whether this release date will end up being delayed due to the halt in production. There are also several other Disney live-action remakes on the horizon, including Robin Hood, Peter Pan, and Hercules. This rumor comes to us courtesy of The DisInsider.

From Countrynow: July 24, 2020 Is Disney Looking To Cast Kacey Musgraves In ‘The Little Mermaid’ Remake? by LAUREN JO BLACK
Could Kacey Musgraves land a part in the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid? According to a few reliable sources, it’s possible!
DisInsider reports that Disney has recently had Zoom meetings with Musgraves and is looking to potentially cast her for the role of Vanessa, the human persona that villain Ursula transforms into during the film.
Although multiple sources confirmed the meetings between Disney and the six-time Grammy winner, no official statement has been made from either party.
The previously-announced all-star cast for the much-anticipated new film includes Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah-Hauer King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
If Musgraves does in fact land the role, this won’t be her first time working with Disney. She previously recorded the song “All Is Found” for the Frozen 2 soundtrack. And in 2015, she appeared on the collaborative We Love Disney album, with a cover of “A Spoonful of Sugar” from Mary Poppins.
That same year, she professed her love of The Little Mermaid in an exclusive promo clip for the We Love Disney album, admitting she used to be “pretty obsessed” with Ariel and “knew the movie by heart.” Click below to watch.

From PaperMag: Chloe x Halle Were Handed Creative Control of Fendi's New Campaign by Aaron Royce 1h
Fendi's 'Peekaboo' is one of the house's most iconic bags. Naturally, it stands to reason that the people carrying them are equally striking. Case in point: Chloe and Halle Bailey, AKA R&B duo Chloe x Halle, who star in the brand's latest video for its global #MeAndMyPeekaboo campaign.
The Los Angeles-set clip, directed by Andrew Makadsi, features the song "Busy Boy" from the Grammy-nominated sisters' acclaimed album Ungodly Hour. In the video, the Baileys stroll through a tennis court, enjoy a lavish outdoor breakfast, light candles and take a dip in the pool to cool off — all while carrying Pre-Fall 2020 Peekaboos, naturally.
The video provides more of a narrative than most ad campaigns, and with good reason. Creative Director Silvia Venturini Fendi gave the sisters full creative control to hire the team for their campaign video. Alongside Makadsi and stylist Zerina Akers (who they share with Beyoncé), their sisterly bond is captured by Derek Milton and Julian Dakdouk.
Fendi tapped the sisters due to their activism with Black Lives Matter and Gen Z perspectives. "We have always been huge fans of Fendi, and working side by side as sisters is truly a blessing," the duo said in a statement.
Chloe and Halle aren't the only stars of the video; Fendi's Pre-Fall 2020 collection is also worn throughout by the musical starlets. Coordinating blazers, puff-sleeve dresses, and swimsuits all share screen time. The clothes are complemented by new Peekaboos, featuring interchangeable and customizable interior pockets.
The Baileys join an impressive lineup of families that have starred in previous #MeAndMyPeekaboo campaigns, including Kim Kardashian West, Kris Jenner and North West, TK Wonder and Ciprianna Quann, and J-Pop stars Ami and Aya.
"#MeAndMyPeekaboo celebrates the intimate family relationships that represent inseparable bonds and there is no more visible pair of sisters right now than Chloe x Halle," said Venturini Fendi.
Following a standout year that's included praised performances at YouTube's Dear Class of 2020 livestream and the BET Awards, as well as Halle's announced role as Ariel in Disney's future remake of The Little Mermaid, the sisters' stars are shining brighter than ever.
Fendi's latest Peekaboo styles will launch in August.

Brandy (Cinderella from 1997 Disney musical TV film Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella) speaks about Halle Bailey, the new Ariel: From Billboard: HIP-HOP Why Brandy 'Was a Little Hesitant' to Release Her New Album 'B7' 7/30/2020 by Heran Mamo
Over 20 years ago, a legion of Black girls marveled at Brandy’s curled microbraids cascading from her tiara as she played Disney’s first Black princess in the 1997 musical TV film Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella; Whitney Houston co-produced and starred as the Fairy Godmother.
At the time, Brandy was just 18, but her career was about to take off. The following year, the now icon scored her first Hot 100 No. 1 with "The Boy Is Mine" featuring Monica. The track also became Brandy’s first and only Grammy win thus far.
It's been eight years since her last album (2012’s Two Eleven) -- in that time, Brandy starred in Broadway’s Chicago, collaborated with Daniel Caesar and launched her own imprint, Brand Nu -- but now she’s back with B7, the first album released under her label and distributed by Entertainment One (eOne). As Brandy speaks in her honeyed, husky vocals -- which earned her the title of “Vocal Bible” -- the 41-year-old reveals how she took the reins on B7.
She says her favorite song on the album, “Borderline,” channels “Angel in Disguise” from her 1998 LP Never Say Never, while on “Unconditional Oceans” she experiments more with electro-soul beats. Lyrically, Brandy owns the phrase “Baby Mama” on her collaboration with Chance the Rapper; apologizes for her longest musical hiatus to date on opening track “Saving All My Love” (“Sorry for my tardy/ Long time/ I was broken-hearted,” she sings); and confronts her mental health issues head on in the aptly titled “Bye Bipolar.”
As a whole, B7 looks to Brandy’s past -- and pays homage to Houston -- while also ushering in her future, seeing her pass down the torch to her daughter (who features on a track) as well as rising R&B artists such as 20-year-old Halle Bailey from the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, who was cast as Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid last summer.
Billboard spoke with Brandy about the new album, the Disney princess advice she has for Bailey, and how she’s been taking care of herself during the ongoing pandemic.
You co-wrote and co-produced B7, which was a first for you. How did that impact the album?
It was really important for me to just discover that part of myself. I was working with some amazing people like DJ Camper and LaShawn Daniels, who helped guide me, and it was a way for me to really use music to heal and be therapeutic. It felt different than anything that I had ever done, and it's something that I felt like I needed to do.
LaShawn Daniels sadly passed last September. What was the best piece of advice he left you with?
He just wanted me to embrace the parts of me that I doubt. He wanted me to understand that the way I get a song across is my way, my tone, my inflections. My way of expressing myself is unique, and to embrace that and be honest in that and just take that on. And then he just always wanted me to just be confident in my gift, in what I'm here to do, which is to touch, heal and bless people with my music.
Your daughter, Sy’rai, is featured on the ladies anthem “High Heels." What does that mean to you?
Oh my God. First of all, I'm just so proud to be her mom. Just beautiful to see her grow into this beautiful musician, this young artist that’s coming into her own. I just want her to be herself. I want her to follow her creative gut, her creative flow, and just try everything that she possibly can with her voice. And listen to her heart about her music. That's what I tell her all the time.
We’re going to remember 2020 for a lot of things, but it’s become the year that women led the R&B pack. Why do you think Black female R&B artists like yourself, Jhené Aiko, Chloe x Halle, Kehlani and Teyana Taylor have been showing up in such a major way over the past few months?
I believe that music heals. Music is the language that we all speak. It is what we all need, and I feel like we need it more now than we ever have. This is the year where we all need to feel like we have something to get us through. ... I was a little hesitant with putting out music in this time because, of course, you want to speak to the times. And I'm thinking, "My music is not about exactly what's going on right now." But then I thought, "But this is the time where people need to feel like they have something to just escape and just help them heal." ... So that's what made me feel better about releasing [the album].
And I think that we don’t want to feel alone. We need to feel community, we need to feel togetherness, we need to feel love right now. And I think music is the best way to feel that. It’s the shortcut to feeling that right away.
Speaking of Chloe x Halle, do you have any advice for Halle Bailey as she takes a similar trajectory from R&B star to Disney princess with her casting as Ariel in The Little Mermaid live-action remake?
I think she needs to understand that she has everything that it takes to do everything that she's meant to do. I think that she needs to keep positive people around her and to also stay positive and to not live her life for anyone but herself. And I mean that in a way where sometimes in this industry, we can get caught up in what everybody thinks that we should do.
But she should stay true to herself. I believe that her staying true to herself is the reason why she's in a great position to do all of the things that she's meant to do. And I think that she's such a positive role model already. So I just wish her all the best. I absolutely love Halle and I love Chloe. I see so much of myself in Halle. Oh my God.
I’ve been seeing a lot of album covers paying homage to certain icons. When I think about Teyana’s, it’s totally Grace Jones meets Nefertiti. Once I saw yours for B7, I immediately thought Cleopatra meets Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard. Were those the influences for you when coming up with this cover?
Absolutely! I had two huge dreams when I was a kid: One was to be a singer -- a star -- and the other was to meet Whitney Houston. ... I've always been inspired by Whitney, and I always find ways to pay homage to her. And my album cover was one of the ways to subliminally acknowledge her without saying it. And it’s so interesting that so many people saw that and mentioned it. And it was just in my own, not quiet way, but I had no idea that people were going to pick that up like they did. ... But I always find ways to acknowledge her, even when I’m not saying it. I’m always talking about Whitney.
Currently on the Billboard Hot 100, several female duets are hitting No. 1, a feat that only eight songs have ever accomplished, including “The Boy Is Mine.” Thinking back, did you have any idea how big of a hit it would become?
I didn't know how big it was gonna be; I had no idea that it would be No. 1 for 13 weeks. I didn’t know. But I did know that it was a special record. I knew that it was a special record before I got on it, before Monica got on it. I knew just with the way the track sounded, I never heard anything like that.
But then when the song was written on top of it, and then ... when it all came together, I was like, "OK, this is different." And then when Monica put her stamp on it, you just heard the contrast between her and I. I knew that it was gonna be something special, but I had no idea it was going to do what it did. I'm still blown away today. It was an incredible moment that I kind of wish we would have seized even more.

From Inside the magic: Voice Work Begins for Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’ IN DISNEY, MOVIES
Posted on July 30, 2020 by Kristin Yep Leave a comment
It’s been over four months since production for the live-action The Little Mermaid was temporarily shut down leaving the set abandoned.
Periodically, we’ve gotten updates on the production with Halle Bailey speaking about the halt in production just a month afterwards. Alan Menken, who just recently reached E.G.O.T. status, confirmed a few weeks after that the score for the film was complete. The latest news came just a few days ago when it was reported that country singer, Kacey Musgraves may be a part of the cast, as Ursula’s human alter-ego.
There hasn’t been any updates on when filming will resume on set, but it seems like there may be some work going on for the film — Voice work that is! (And no, Ursula isn’t stealing anyone’s voice for now.)
In a tweet showed a photo captured of Jacob Tremblay starting voice work for the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid who is the voice of Ariel’s adorable fish friend, Flounder. This is a very good sign that things are moving again in production.
As we see that many health and safety measures are being added into the new normal of how all businesses operate, we know that Disney is working towards implementations of these guidelines to create a work environment to protect the well-being of all cast and crew for the film.
There are still no updates as to when the film will be released. It was recently revealed that there has been several changes to the release schedule that involves many Disney films.
In light of the long period of time that work has been paused in the entertainment industry, the timeline for the release of The Little Mermaid may very well be affected as well. Disney fans continue to stay very excited to what The Walt Disney Studios does with this film in a string of live-action remakes for previous Disney animated films.
Are you excited to see the live-action The Little Mermaid? Let us know in the comments below.
