Deadline: Disney Mulling Live-Action Version Of ‘The Little Mermaid’
EXCLUSIVE: Execs at Disney are in the early stages of reviving Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid as a live-action feature. Disney produchttp://deadline.com/2016/05/disney-beauty-and-the-beast-live-action-teaser-1201761213/tion chiefs recently heard a new take and are currently evaluating whether to proceed with the idea. Deadline understands that initial discussions have also taken place with major producers, including some with a strong connection to the studio.
The Little Mermaid holds special significance for Disney, which produced an animated version of the story in 1989. That pic, which followed the adventures of Ariel the singing mermaid, gave viewers classic songs such as “Under The Sea” and helped usher in a new golden age of animation at Disney. That streak would include Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin.
The teaser for Disney’s live-action version of Beauty And The Beast, starring Emma Watson, was viewed almost 92 million times in its first 24 hours alone this week, beating the previous record holder for most viewed teaser Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as the latest installments of Marvel titles Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Age Of Ultron — all of which are Disney movies.
That, along with the sensational performance of The Jungle Book, with a worldwide gross to date of $860 million — has buoyed Disney execs to look through their back catalog for more live-action adaptations.
Should Disney execs decide to move forward, they’ll find strong competition from an existing live-action project being led by Brit production powerhouse Working Title. That Little Mermaid project, set up at Universal, has Chloe Grace Moretz attached to star and up-and-coming filmmaker Rebecca Thomas set to direct from a script by Richard Curtis.
Disney is moving forward expansively with its live-action slate in general. In April it dated a number of films in addition to Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27), Beauty And The Beast (March 17, 2017), as well as this summer’s Pete’s Dragon (August 12). The slate includes Cruella with Emma Stone set for the title role and Kelly Marcel writing; A Wrinkle In Time with Ava DuVernay attached to direct and Jennifer Lee writing; Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson set to star and John Requa and Glenn Ficarra writing; Dumbo with director Tim Burton and writer Ehren Kruger; and a sequel to Mary Poppins with director Rob Marshall, starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Also in the pipelines are Maleficent 2 with Angelia Jolie set to return in the title role and Linda Woolverton writing; The Nutcracker And The Four Realms with director Lasse Hallstrom and writer Ashleigh Powell; The Jungle Book 2 with both director Jon Favreau and writer Justin Marks returning; and a Tinker Bell project with Reese Witherspoon set to star and Victoria Strouse writing.

Believe it when I see it and if Disney cared as much AS THE article implies Ariel would have beeen in season one of Once Upon a Time .The Broadway show would STILL be running AND they would NOT have deep sixed the film at all in the nineties

FINALLY! There is concrete news of Disney adapting TLM to a live action musical the upcoming Beauty and the Beast film. For me, I'm most excited for Lin-Manuel Miranda's involvement in helping Alan Menken co-write NEW MUSIC and also supervising the script. This has the potential to be a really well-done adaptation. I'm hoping they don't resort to the jokes and gags that the Broadway/non-equity stage versions have done and I hope the plot and the story become enriched and strengthened with the new additions. It's a family movie, not a kid's movie. I was very disappointed with the script that was used in the stage versions of the show, so hopefully with the partnership with Miranda they can bring back the heart into the story and please fans of all sorts. He's a huge fan of TLM, his son's name is Sebastian! Plus, he has two big Disney projects on the way with Moana and Mary Poppins Returns (and I'm a huuuuge fan of In The Heights and Hamilton). Of course, I'd be lying if I said I'm entirely happy with all of this. I hope the story doesn't change too much, I know the original script of the film completely by memory so it will be strange hearing brand new words. And new music too, now that's something. Miranda can really write a good tune, so I'm not too worried on this front. I hope at least a couple of the Broadway tunes might be a part of the live action film, but I doubt it because live action Beauty and the Beast did not include any songs from its stage adaptation. For me, this will come down to the story and script, the new music, the visual look of the movie, and most of all the cast. No information as of lately has been released about casting. I sincerely hope there's an open call for Ariel, even though celebrities are usually cast for these types of films, but I will be first in line if that's the case! Playing Ariel would be a dream come true. Just the other day, I received my video from singing Part of Your World at Carnegie Hall, I hope maybe I can get someone from Disney to notice... Potential update: Disney is eyeing Rob Marshall to possibly direct the live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, who is currently directing Mary Poppins Returns (which Lin-Manuel Miranda is also a part of, coincidentally, as he's set to be writing new music material with Alan Menken for TLM live action). link: www.broadway.com/buzz/190608/disney-eyes-director-rob-marshall-to-go-under-the-sea-with-live-action-little-mermaid/Previous direction credits of his include Into the Woods (2014), Nine (2009), Chicago (2002), Annie (1999), Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997), and he has 4 Tony nominations in choreography and direction of a few Broadway shows. He definitely knows how to direct a musical. The roles I'm most interested in seeing be filled, besides the on-camera cast, are in the music department- music directors, songs producers, songs arrangers, orchestrators, music scoring mixers, music editor, conductor, etc. Will Alan Menken be music directing as well as writing new music and assisting on the tunes we all know and love? Will there be someone in charge to make sure it's not all an autotuned mess and the right people are cast who can properly deliver musical theatre material without their voices needing editing in post-production? Only time will tell.

Latest update- we have a date! Potentially. Deadline Hollywood released a list of the dates for the upcoming planned Disney/Pixar/Marvel releases, link here: deadline.com/2018/03/disney-live-action-mulan-2020-release-date-nicole-moved-off-schedule-release-dates-1202307448/, and the one that seems most likely to be TLM based on all the sources I've looked at is "UNTITLED DISNEY LIVE ACTION now dated on 7/9/21". No other news on casting or creative team, Rob Marshall is still rumored to be directing but none of that is confirmed yet. I'm on the edge of my seat just WAITING for some substantial news to come out already, but this will do for now!

From DisneyFilmFacts: EXCLUSIVE: DISNEY CONSIDERING ACTORS OF COLOR FOR THE LIVE-ACTION LITTLE MERMAID
Walt Disney Studios has found much success with their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films grossing over $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. So it should come as no surprise that Disney is hard at work on a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. As memorable as the characters are from the animated film, Disney maybe going a new route with new film.
Our source close to the production has informed us that Disney is looking at people of color for various roles including Ariel, Eric, and Triton.
A name that Disney at one point had interest in is Keke Palmer, however it is not known if Disney had any form of discussions with Palmer or if it was merely interest. Another name floating around the studio is indeed Zendaya.
We do know that Ariana Grande which is a popular name amongst many fan casts, is not being considered at the moment.
It should be noted that Disney is considering a bunch of actors for various roles, so whether or not they go with POC, one thing is certain, we will start hearing some news very soon!
Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda will team up to compose the music for the film, as well as add new songs to the film.
Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is set to helm the film, from a script by Jane Goldman (X-Men: Days Of Future Past).
Production on The Little Mermaid is expected to take place in Puerto Rico and Cape Town Africa. As of right now there is no release date for the film.

Part of me is still really hoping they'd consider an unknown actress for Ariel (especially if I can audition! ah, what a dream!!), but in case that ship has sailed, I'd love to see POC play roles in TLM live action! In my dream cast, Auli'i Cravalho would make a stunning Ariel!

I totally agree with Auli'i being a perfect Ariel!

From Popbuzz: People Want Ariana Grande To Be In 'The Little Mermaid' Live Action Movie 3 August 2018, 17:35
Ariana Grande Little Mermaid Picture: Kevin Winter/Getty Nicky Idika By Nicky Idika Not gonna lie, it's a mood.
The planned Little Mermaid live action remake doesn't have a release date, trailers, or official cast confirmation, but fans already have an idea of who they want to see in the lead role.
Ariel has a special place in the Disney princess line-up and a fan made concept trailer for the live action remake has people hoping begging for Ariana Grande to play the mermaid.
We can't stress enough that this is a fan made teaser but it looks so good that fans are getting HYPE for Ariana Grande to fill the role.
Stephanie @swampdemonn ***** I just saw a fake trailer for the little mermaid but Ariana grande is the little mermaid and I am not lying I would forreal love that 4:40 AM - Aug 2, 2018 See Stephanie's other Tweets Twitter Ads info and privacy

And we already know she looks good as a red head.
via Nickelodeon In addition to the fan casting of Ariana Grande as Ariel, the teaser "trailer" by YouTube user Tommy Ross places Henry Cavill in the role of Prince Eric which is also a FANTASTIC concept.
An additional teaser "trailer" by the same account casts Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Queen Latifah in the film as well.
Will Ariana Grande play Ariel in The Little Mermaid? Never say never, but right now it doesn't look likely. Ariana's Sweetener drops in August 2018, which means she will likely embark on a world tour shortly after.
The only thing we really know about the live action remake is that Lin Manuel-Miranda is doing the music for it, but not much else.
If the film's producers happen to see Tommy Ross' concept trailer, though, we're hoping begging that they call Ariana's people ASAP because she would be perfect.

People have been wanting Ariana for Ariel ever since she had firetruck red hair on Victorious. I can definitely see Disney casting her and wouldn't be too mad at it since I'm an Ariana fan, but I would prefer someone whose vocals were a closer match to Ariel's - like a mixy musical theatre mezzo/belter or soprano instead of a pop belter and whistle register soprano. She also will be extremely busy as soon as Sweetener drops (which I'm super excited for and I hope she comes near me on tour!), so it's a bit unlikely. Just my two cents! Queen Latifah for Ursula sounds like a solid choice to me too! I would actually love to see a drag interpretation of Ursula. Harvey Fierstein has expressed interest in the role and would be great! Someone like Shangela or Peppermint, both from RuPaul's Drag Race, I think would be AMAZING as her! For me I can't imagine anyone outside of Tituss Burgess being Sebastian! For Triton, I feel like The Rock might be a bit too young, and again I'm really leaning towards wanting Norm Lewis to reprise Triton again (heck just get all the Broadway folks in it and I'd be a happy camper! 😂)
