It's interesting to know they've got this planned. I am wondering why Ariel has a leather up laceup corset instead of her blue dress for the Kiss the Girl scene. It's not a good sign that they saved the TLM announcement for the very last one. From my perspective, it looks like the video was more intended to promote their lineup changes then anything else. And you just can't hide it? Sorry, couldn't resist completing the line! Also, I am concerned that Once Upon A Time is being moved to the Friday night slot. That means they're trying to sabotage the show by putting it in a timeslot where ratings are minimal. It's happened several times before, too many to list! And inevitably all of those shows were cancelled........

I wonder if there will be a live audience, I'd love to be able to attend this! I'm still so sad I had to miss out on The Little Mermaid Live at the Hollywood Bowl last summer 😭 From what I'm reading, it'll be a mix of celebrity voices singing the songs with clips from the animated film. And maybe some staged portions with costumes and scenery? I have no clue about that. I really am wondering about casting for this. I feel like a lot of it will be household name celebrities but part of me is holding out just maybe for a sort of open call audition... It's also set to include "cutting-edge technology", so I wonder if they'll be splicing live clips with animated clips or something like that? There's a million directions this could go!
Here's some more specific info:
So we have a date, Tuesday 10/3/17, probably around primetime (7 or 8pm) on ABC. I'm just waiting with bated breath for more information and I've been searching like crazy to see if there's any way little ol me can get involved!

Most of the time, I would prefer that they get unknowns or not mainstream acting cast members to play the roles. If I was a Director/Producer, I'd cast on talent, not name recognition.
Mostly I'm just irked that some movies lately have gone for name recognition and cast a person who has no resemblance to the character they are meant to be portraying. Putting a nametag on someone doesn't make them that character.....
I am curious about the technology notes too. It's probably not possible yet, but I wonder if they could actually project some kind of 3D hologram into the stage area. Like if you want it to appear like you're under the sea, it makes the shapes and lights of Ariel's grotto and the waves. The performers would have to block out their actions very carefully though, if they stood on the holographic projector lens, the set would vanish! But it might be better to have the lens hanging from the lighting rail, less chance of someone blocking the light beams.

buckmana I agree, it'd be really refreshing to see fresh talent and not have to shoehorn household names that might not be the best picks out there. I'm gonna voice an unpopular opinion here, but I wasn't really impressed by Emma Watson's Belle. She definitely looked the part, I thought she fit the new look of Belle flawlessly, but I didn't see a lot of the passion that Belle has or that spark within her. Particularly in the singing. She seemed a little dead in the eyes and voice. Just my thoughts. I think she's a wonderful actress in other roles (quite possibly the perfect choice for Hermione in Harry Potter), but she just didn't do it for me as Belle. So I'm hoping for this TLM Live special, and for the live action film, vocal performance and theatricality can be taken into consideration when casting and not just looks and names. I imagine there will be a lot of projections. Disney is BIG on projections. There's a new fireworks show at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom called Happily Ever After that is fully projected onto Cinderella Castle. Several scenes from films are re-animated or redone to be set on and about the castle, for instance you'll have Aladdin scaling the castle walls and fending off bad guys, and I think Ursula is featured in it as well when she grows from normal size to mega size, encompassing the entire castle. The amount of work it took from animators and imagineers to make it possible is astounding, it's a really magical feat of engineering. Maybe they'll do something similar for this? Media outlets are really on the fence about this event, mainly because it's being marketed as a animated-live hybrid and not a straight live musical like Grease Live or The Wiz Live or Hairspray Live etc. They don't really know what to expect, so we're all just waiting on the details and speculating for the time being. yougottaloveariel I saw your post in the other thread about casting. I did hear from many people that they want Lady Gaga as Ursula, and I'm actually curious about it. She has a really nice musical theatre voice when she has the opportunity to sing in that style, and her range is pretty low, I think she could give a really solid performance as her. I'd really like to see a young talent like Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel. As much as I looooove Sara Bareilles, she didn't really seem as youthful as Ariel is when she portrayed her in the live Hollywood Bowl TLM event. But what I'm thinking is maybe they won't have one single actor portray one single character, but several singers and actors lending their voices and performances to each song. Actors of different ages, races, maybe even genders will all get to take part in recreating classic songs, which I think could be a cool angle to take it in. I don't even think there will be a lot of costuming and staging involved if they do it that way, unless they're thinking of casting one actor to fully portray each character more accurately and fully stage portions of the story and have the animation accompany it? I really have no clue!

Eric me too!! (haha buckmana 🎶I'm so excited/I just can't hide it🎶) yougottaloveariel If auditions are open to the public, then certainly I would love to audition! Yup, it'll probably all happen around the LA area, which I'm not really near at all, but if it's available for me I will definitely pursue it as best I can. veu I hope so too! It'd be a shame if it were only limited to US audiences!

To be honest, Emma Watson wasn't really someone I was aware of. I had to look up her bio to find out what she's been doing and apparently, she's only had one specific role, there's like 10 entries connected to it. So maybe she just isn't a role flexible actress, the kind of person who comes out of a specific role and doesn't know how to do something different.
I wonder if that might be another reason to hire unknowns. I don't know from personal experience, but someone who is new to their career might approach it with more enthusiasm then someone who's been doing it for a while. And that energy might translate into a more dynamic performance. That's the impression I got of Auli'i Cravalho, she gave her best effort because she was new to acting.
Since I consistently have troubles with region specific content, I think everything made should be internationally accessible. Because for franchises that have international appeal, you don't really know where your fans may be located. They could be at the top of Mount Everest, a research station in Antartica or in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!! I hope they'll eventually release this on DVD and Blu-ray!! This sounds really interesting and I hope they don't mess up when it comes to casting because that could potentially upset their intended audience.

SAD UPDATE! ABC has indefinitely postponed/cancelled the event! www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2017/08/03/abc-drops-plans-little-mermaid-musical/535299001/Honestly, I had a good feeling this would happen. And maybe it's for the better? What I heard is that the event would just be the film TLM as we know it but with added in music videos and singing portions by Disney Channel stars and the like, and not like actually people playing Ariel and other characters but weird pop arrangements of every song...so maybe we dodged a bullet? But I'm still sad it's beached for now since TLM doesn't get that much screen time as it is and anything vaguely new that's TLM related has me super excited by default, but I guess this will be no longer :(

From HollywoodReporter: AUGUST 05, 2019 10:40am PT by Jean Bentley
'Little Mermaid' Live Starring Auli'i Cravalho Set at ABC
Queen Latifah and Shaggy will also headline the live concert, set to air Nov. 5 as part of 'The Wonderful World of Disney' franchise. ABC has found another live-action Ariel, and she's already a Disney princess: Auli'i Cravalho, aka the voice of Moana, will star in a live concert production of The Little Mermaid set to air on the broadcast network.
Also slated for the production: Queen Latifah as villain Ursula, Shaggy as Ariel's BFF crustacean friend, Sebastian. The live event — which will be reimagined for a live studio audience — will air Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. as part of The Wonderful World of Disney franchise. (Check out a rendering of the ABC special, below.)
In 2017, ABC announced that it was working on a live musical special that would interweave live performances of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's Oscar-winning songs with clips from the 1989 animated film. The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live was slated to air Oct. 3 of that year, but was later scrapped. The new take boasts the same concept and producers. The hybrid format will feature intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original animated film and Tony-winning Broadway stage version. The latter's lyricist, Glenn Slater, will also contribute to the ABC special. Richard Kraft, who produced and directed the buzzy Hollywood Bowl productions of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast will also exec produce. (Watch a scene from that, below.)
“We are postponing the Little Mermaid Live special. We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves,” an ABC spokesperson said in a statement at the time, though sources told THR at the time that it was a budgetary issue. Sets had already been built, and rehearsals were slated to begin shortly.
NBC has also canceled some of its live musical programming, scrapping both Bye Bye Birdie and Hair. Its live broadcast of A Few Good Men was also pushed from the schedule and its status remains murky at best. The network, under new entertainment presidents Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, currently has no live event programming planned. Their predecessor at NBC — Bob Greenblatt — was the exec responsible for reviving the live musical genre.
While the live musical genre hit a sour note with the low-rated not-quite-live Rent Live, it is still "meaningful for affiliates, and broadcast networks are affiliate-dependent," an exec told THR in January. "Sometimes you need meaningful, live events — sports, awards shows, musicals — that illustrate broadcast is still relevant."
ABC saw success with its live production of two classic Norman Lear TV episodes, Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons. The 90-minute special averaged 10.36 million viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49, double ABC's season average for the time period. That, along with new live takes on police shows, has helped reinvent the genre. ABC on Monday confirmed that the event would become a regular part of its schedule, with a holiday offering and spring 2020 broadcast also in the works.
The new ABC live concert take arrives as parent company Disney is also plotting a live-action musical with singer-actress Halle Bailey set to topline the feature film. Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina co-star and lend their voices to other live-action and CG parts. Rob Marshall will direct. Production begins in early 2020.A rendering of ABC's The Little Mermaid live concert:

From CNN: 'Little Mermaid Live!' to air on ABC Whitney Friedlander, CNN
August 5, 2019 'Little Mermaid Live!' to star Auli'i Cravalho (CNN)Here's some stuff for Disney fans to look at that's pretty neat: ABC will air a live, stage version of animated classic "The Little Mermaid."
The production will star "Moana's" Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel, the titular young heroine who makes the Faustian deal to trade in her voice for legs that will allow her to walk on land and find her true love -- and Queen Latifah as the evil sea witch Ursula who brokers such an arrangement. Reggae star Shaggy will voice Sebastian, the meddling crustacean who warns Ariel that it's safer to stay "under the sea." More casting announcements will come soon. Hamish Hamilton, who is known for his work on Super Bowl halftime shows starring the likes of Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, will direct and also serve as an executive producer. According to a release provided to CNN, the production is being described as a "hybrid format" that will include intricate sets and costumes, along with music from the original 1989 film and the 2008 Broadway stage version. "The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!" will air November 5 on ABC. It is not to be confused with Disney's own live-action cinematic remake of "The Little Mermaid," which will star Halle Bailey as Ariel. The original movie earned three Oscar nominations. It included the voices of Jodi Benson as Ariel, Pat Carroll as Ursula and Samuel E. Wright as Sebastian. The Broadway adaptation starred Sierra Boggess as Ariel, Sherie Rene Scott as Ursula and Tituss Burgess as Sebastian and was nominated for two Tony Awards.

From Los Angeles Times: TELEVISION Disney diversifies ‘Little Mermaid Live!’ by casting ‘Moana’ star as Ariel
Hawaiian actress Auli’i Cravalho will play Ariel on ABC’s “The Little Mermaid Live!” this November.(Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times, left. Walt Disney Pictures, right. ) By NARDINE SAADSTAFF WRITER AUG. 5, 2019 11:44 AM “The Little Mermaid Live!” is jumping back in the pool at ABC this November with a new actress playing the role of the beloved singing mermaid.
“Moana” breakout star Auli’i Cravalho has been called under the sea to play Ariel in the live musical event, further diversifying Disney’s casting choices for the beloved role. The Hawaiian singer will be joined by Queen Latifah, who’ll play the villainous sea witch Ursula, and reggae star Shaggy as Ariel’s crabby sidekick Sebastian, ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke announced Monday during the Television Critics Assn.'s summer press tour.
The “musical reinterpretation,” which was first announced in 2017 but then tabled shortly thereafter, will air on Nov. 5 under ABC’s revived “The Wonderful World of Disney” banner to mark the 30th anniversary of the animated feature film. It’s also ABC’s first — and very belated — entry in the resurgent genre of live-musical TV programming after years of musical events airing on rival networks. So it’s no surprise that it’s diving in with a Disney classic.
The news comes just weeks after Walt Disney Studios announced its casting of R&B star Halle Bailey as Ariel for the studio’s forthcoming live-action reboot and after years of live-show performances of the Hans Christian Andersen-inspired tale. “Glee” star Lea Michele voiced Ariel, who aspires to be part of the human world, in the Hollywood Bowl’s film-concert last summer.
But ABC isn’t really worried about sinking Disney’s splashy rollout for the live-action film because the ABC show is geared for television audiences.
“I’m not really worried about overshadowing the other,” Burke said at Monday’s TCA panel. “The timing is so different. Ours premieres in the fall. The movie will hit theaters long after that.
“It’s also a testament to the strength of the Disney IP that these classic stories can continue to have iterations that are so different,” she added. “Ours is really built for television. It’s unlike anything any other network has done before in terms of a live musical. It really is a combination of a seamless interweaving of the live-action musical and the animated film itself.”
ABC bills the show as a special tribute to the original animated film, with live musical performances interwoven into the broadcast.
That format will feature “beautifully intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original animated film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage version,” according to a press release. The music was composed by eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, and will showcase Howard Ashman’s iconic film lyrics. The work of Glenn Slater, the lyricist for the Broadway adaptation, also will be used for the show, ABC said.

From People: ABC Announces The Little Mermaid Live Event Starring Auli'i Cravalho, Queen Latifah and Shaggy Auli'i Cravalho, the voice of Disney's Moana, will play Ariel in the live concert production
By Aurelie Corinthios and Scott Huver August 05, 2019 03:47 PM
Auli’i Cravalho just became a double Disney princess.
The actress, who voiced Moana in the hit 2016 movie of the same name, has been cast as Ariel in a live concert production of The Little Mermaid set to air on ABC, the network announced Monday. Queen Latifah has been cast as Ursula, and Shaggy as Sebastian, with additional cast announcements to be made at a later date.
The live musical event event, set to air Nov. 5 as part of “The Wonderful World of Disney” franchise honoring the 30th anniversary of The Little Mermaid, will “take viewers on a magical adventure under the sea as live musical performances by a star-studded cast will be interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film,” according to ABC.
“This never-before-seen hybrid format will feature beautifully intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original animated film and the Tony Award-winning Broadway stage version,” the press release continues.
The news comes as Disney is gearing up for production of a live-action feature adaptation of the 1989 animated film, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel. Production is anticipated to begin in early 2020.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harry Styles is in talks to play Ariel’s love interest, Prince Eric. Also in contention to costar are Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
While speaking at an ABC executive session in Los Angeles on Monday, Karey Burke, ABC’s president of entertainment, said the network is not worried about the TV version overshadowing the upcoming movie due to timing and distinctive differences.
The live event, which will combine live-action, animation and puppetry, is “unlike anything that any network has done before in terms of live-action musical,” Burke said, adding that the vision is “kind of mind-blowing.”
The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live! will air Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. ET, live on ABC.
