From TeenVogue: From Moana to the Little Mermaid. BY LAUREN REARICK OCTOBER 7, 2019 Ariel of the Little Mermaid and Aulii Cravalho
Fans will have to wait just a little longer to see the final cast for the upcoming Little Mermaid live-action movie remake, but the cast for the live television adaptation has been revealed. Airing November 5 on ABC, The Little Mermaid Live! will feature elements of the movie alongside live-action singing, which should make for a completely enchanting under-the-sea experience.
For the television special, former Rise star Auli'i Cravalho, who also provided the voice for Disney's Moana, was selected for the role of everyone's favorite little mermaid, Ariel, Deadline reported.
In a tweeted promotional video, the rest of the cast was also revealed, including Queen Latifah as Ursula, Shaggy as Sebastian, John Stamos as Chef Louis, and Graham Phillips, who played Nick St. Clair on Riverdale, was chosen as Prince Eric.
There's still a few more weeks until this group brings the Little Mermaid magic to life for a television audience, but many fans were already excited. "I am so looking forward to queen latifah as Ursula," one person remarked. Others also said they "can't wait" and that this casting, along with Halle Bailey's casting in the upcoming film is "genuine EXCELLENCE."
However, even with the announcement, some important casting decisions have yet to be shared. As one fan pointed out, the television adaptation did not confirm who will be playing King Triton or Flounder. That being said, with the air date less than a month away, it's likely that we'll know more soon.
The ABC television adaption will air far in advance of a planned Little Mermaid live-action film remake. Due to begin filming in 2020, the Little Mermaid movie version is also still finalizing up casting, and although Halle has been confirmed for the role of Ariel, casting for Prince Eric and other major roles reportedly remains ongoing.

The actors are not re-voicing the characters, but performing live on stage. No new songs will be written for the production.

From Mtv: AULI'I CRAVALHO AND QUEEN LATIFAH DAZZLE AS ARIEL AND URSULA IN FIRST THE LITTLE MERMAID LIVE TEASER DIVE IN WITH A NEW LOOK AT THE UPCOMING TV MUSICAL
BRITTANY VINCENT 19h ago Auli'i Cravalho is about to become part of Ariel's world in The Little Mermaid Live, and we can't wait to see it.
In a new 30-second teaser for the upcoming TV special, we got our first look at Cravalho and her shiny red tresses, all ready to serve as Ariel. Meanwhile, Queen Latifah is looking all kinds of fierce as Ursula the Sea Witch. It looks like the pair both have costumes that, while true to the movie, play up their strengths and go for a glammed-out effect.
The video also introduced Shaggy clad in all red as Sebastian the Crab, John Stamos as the mustache-twirling Chef Louis, and Graham Phillips as a fittingly handsome Prince Eric. Interestingly enough, Disney has yet to reveal who will be taking on the role in the upcoming live-action theatrical version of The Little Mermaid, though there have been some interesting contenders for the part. Hopefully we hear more news to that end soon, because just one live-action Ariel and Prince Eric isn't enough, as anyone might agree.
This musical event is going to be an interesting twist on the typical live broadcasts you might have seen before, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again. It's set to feature live musical performances from the cast actually woven in between a broadcast of the original movie. It's being hailed as a "never-before-seen hybrid format" that will "feature beautifully intricate sets and costumes, with music from the original." It's a bit hard to picture how that might work out, but we're definitely into it.
The Little Mermaid Live is set to debut on ABC on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8 PM ET. Go ahead and start practicing your favorite songs from the animated classic now. You're going to want to make sure you've brushed up on every single word.

From Vulture: Queen Latifah, Auli’i Cravalho and Shaggy Welcome You Under the Sea in Little Mermaid Live! Teaser By Halle Kiefer@hallekiefer
Hmmm, strange how the teaser trailer for ABC’s The Little Mermaid Live! doesn’t get into how the cast plans to sing while completely submerged in a SeaWorld-sized tank of water (we’re assuming). Probably want to save the surprise, but in the meantime, the network is more than happy to offer a sneak peek at the musical’s main characters, including Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho as the titular Ariel and Queen Latifah as sinister cephalopod sorceress Ursula.
Rounding out the cast is Shaggy as benevolent, anxiety-riddled crab Sebastian and John Stamos as would-be fish murderer Chef Louis, both of whom we’d like to think wore their own clothes to set and refused to change. Meanwhile, where is our Flounder? Where are our Flotsam and Jetsam? Most importantly, where is our sea daddy King Triton? Fortunately, we won’t have to tread water too much longer to find out. The Little Mermaid Live! airs on ABC Tuesday, November 5.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From Access: See Auli’i Cravalho, John Stamos, Queen Latifah And More In ‘Little Mermaid Live’ Sneak Peek
October 07, 2019
The new trailer for “Little Mermaid Live” takes Disney fans under the sea to part of Ariel’s world.
The ABC special, airing on November 5, will join elements of the original Disney movie with live musical performances as “a special tribute to the original animated classic and its timeless music.”
The star-studded cast features “Moana” star Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula, recording artist Shaggy as Sebastian, John Stamos as Chef Louis and Graham Phillips as Prince Eric.
In 2020, production for Disney’s live-action feature adaptation of the 1989 film, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, will begin. This casting made headlines back in July when Disney made a departure from Ariel’s classic appearance by selecting an African American actress to play the role.
Tune into “The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live!,” honoring the 30th anniversary of the animated movie, on Tuesday, November 5 at 8 p.m. EST.

From Cinemablend: TELEVISION Disney's The Little Mermaid Live! Reveals First Look At Ariel, Ursula And More GINA CARBONE 0 COMMENTS 18 HOURS AGO
The classic animated Little Mermaid movie was released in theaters in November 1989, and we're getting multiple projects in honor of the 30th anniversary. This is the one with John Stamos laying it on thick with the French cheese. He's part of the cast of The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!, which will air live November 5 on ABC.
This live musical should not be confused with the live-action Little Mermaid movie that was still looking for a Prince Eric last time we checked, after Harry Styles passed. This ABC live musical has a Prince Eric, in addition to a beloved Disney star as Ariel and a perfect diva as Ursula. Plus, Shaggy? I'm down!
ABC showed off the cast as their characters in a little preview video. We see Moana star Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula, Shaggy as Sebastian, The Good Wife alum Graham Phillips as Prince Eric, and Full House alum John Stamos as Chef Louis.
Auli’i Cravalho looks like a beautiful Ariel. But have mercy on the poisson, Louis! You remember his song, right?
John Stamos is reprising his role as Chef Louis after his performance in the Hollywood Bowl production of The Little Mermaid. ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! is going for a never-before-seen hybrid format -- live musical performances by the cast will be interwoven into the broadcast of the original feature film.
The live musical event will feature intricate sets and costumes by Emmy Award-winning designer Zaldy, with music from the original animated film and the Tony Award-nominated Broadway stage version. Here's a look at the set:
The Little Mermaid Live! set ABC Director Hamish Hamilton called the half-live musical/half-original animated movie an "interesting hybrid." He also said during the TCA press tour (via Deadline) that fans are invited to the Little Mermaid theater on the Disney lot where the 1989 movie will be projected.
The Little Mermaid Live! is a celebration. We’re celebrating this incredible animated feature, and we’re gonna do it on the Disney lot. We’re going to do it live-to-air in front of a live audience in a room that we’ve created. So we’re going to invite anybody to come, both televisionally and real people, real fans, come to our Little Mermaid theater. In the middle of the room, we will have a giant projection surface, and on that projection surface we will play the feature. When we get to one of Alan [Merken] and Howard [Ashman’s wonderful songs, essentially we will transition beautifully and smoothly into a world of live performance. Here's an interesting note: Hamish Hamilton said they don't have understudies for The Little Mermaid Live! So you never know if we'll get a repeat of the live version of Rent, which also didn't have understudies and was mostly not "live" after a star's major injury during rehearsals.
We don’t have understudies, but we have a robust plan to, kind of, combat all of those kinds of situations, to be honest with you. Shaggy noted, during the TCAs, that this is his second time with The Little Mermaid since he recorded a rap version of "Under the Sea" back in 1996.
I have three daughters and I had to sit down there and watch this movie, the original movie, over and over and over and over and over and over again. I feel like Sebastian is me because after a while, you are watching it and your girls are there, and because they are reciting every line to it, you’ve got to join in at some point because that’s the only way you are getting points as a dad.
ABC's preview shows Auli’i Cravalho wearing a red wig, to match the Ariel fans are used to seeing from the animated movie. She spoke at the TCAs about her love for the character:
I think there is just so much room to play with that while, of course, still paying homage to the original character. That’s me anyway. And, of course, there’s so many beautiful set designs and so much of, really, a visual buffet that I am part of this, but there’s also just so much more that I know people will enjoy that I won’t have to worry too, too much about what I bring to the character because I bring myself, and I feel like that’s enough. The Little Mermaid Live! airs Tuesday, November 5 from 8 to 10 p.m. on ABC. Don't forget that the new streaming service Disney+ is launching the very next week on November 12, and I'm sure that will be mentioned during the live broadcast.

From EliteDaily: ABC's First 'Little Mermaid Live' Trailer Shows Queen Latifah As Ursula BY DYLAN KICKHAM OCT 7, 2019
While Disney fans will have to wait a while for the Little Mermaid live-action movie to hit theaters, another trip under the sea is planned much sooner. A couple months ago, ABC announced it was planning a live musical production of The Little Mermaid, and now the network has dropped a first look at the superstar cast in character. ABC's first Little Mermaid Live trailer is guaranteed to get fans pumped for the brand-new live interpretation of the classic story.
While NBC and Fox have been pumping out live musical specials for the past several years, The Little Mermaid Live will mark ABC's first foray into the growing trend, and it will also stand apart as a bit different from other televised musical specials. Rather than being a straight adaptation of either the Little Mermaid Disney movie or the subsequent Broadway musical, the live event will combine the two into what has been teased as a hybrid. Viewers will see scenes from the beloved 1989 movie, along with live performances from the live cast.
The newly released cast trailer introduces the performers who will head under the sea to belt out all of the most memorable Little Mermaid songs. The clip shows Moana star Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel, rocking the mermaid's signature red locks. Next up, Queen Latifah dons a towering white wig and purple eyeshadow to channel the villainous sea witch Ursula. To play Ariel's crustacean sidekick Sebastian, Shaggy is shown dressed entirely in bright red. The clip also reveals a mustachioed John Stamos as Chef Louis, and Riverdale star Graham Phillips stares down the camera as Prince Eric. Check out the teaser for yourself below:
The best part is that fans will not have to wait much longer to check out this live special. The Little Mermaid Live is set to make a splash on ABC on Tuesday, Nov. 5, which also just so happens to be the 30th anniversary of Disney's The Little Mermaid movie. Talk about a perfect way to celebrate three decades of an animated classic!
While the live musical event will honor The Little Mermaid's past, it will also excite fans for the movie's future as well, since there has been so much buzz around the big-screen live-action version of The Little Mermaid Disney is currently working on. The upcoming movie will star R&B star Halle Bailey as Ariel in the first live-action retelling of Disney's animated tale on the big screen.
None of the movie's other roles are finalized yet, but there have been reports that Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula, Jacob Tremblay is being eyed for Flounder, Awkwafina may play a gender-flipped Scuttle, and Javier Bardem could potentially portray King Triton. The role of Prince Eric received a lot of attention when Harry Styles' name emerged as a frontrunner for the romantic lead, but he turned the part down. Reportedly the studio is now between Cameron Cuffe and Jonah Hauer-King for the part of Prince Eric.
Disney's live-action Little Mermaid isn't set to even begin production until 2020, but fans can check out ABC's The Little Mermaid Live on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

From Stylist: The Little Mermaid Live: everything you need to know about the musical television show Posted byHannah-Rose Yee
This November a live-action staging of the Broadway musical The Little Mermaid will be released on television. With a star-studded cast, some of whom come with serious Disney pedigree, we can’t wait.
Somewhat confusingly, there are a couple of live action The Little Mermaid productions currently in the works.
There’s the Disney movie, starring Halle Bailey (of Chloe x Halle fame) as Ariel, the flame-haired mermaid princess, with Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay as her animal companions Scuttle and Flounder. (Melissa McCarthy is rumoured to be taking on the role of Ursula, with Javier Bardem as King Triton. Sadly, though, Harry Styles turned down the role of Prince Eric.) That movie, directed by Rob Marshall and with new music from Lin Manuel Miranda, is slated for release in 2021.
If you can’t wait until then, never fear. A second live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is coming very soon. A live version of the Broadway musical based on the film and featuring its most famous songs – are you following us? We know it’s confusing – is coming to television on 5 November.
The Little Mermaid Live! follows the storied tradition of staging musicals live in front of audiences and releasing them simultaneously on television. These live adaptations usually feature star-studded casts. Remember when John Legend starred in Joseph And The Technicolour Dreamcoat (winning an Emmy in the process?) or when Vanessa Hudgens took on the role of Rizzo in the live musical staging of Grease?
The Little Mermaid Live! is no different, boasting a fantastic cast, some of whom have well-established Disney pedigrees. Here is everything you need to know about the television show:
Who is in the cast of The Little Mermaid Live! ?
Television network ABC has released a short video introducing audiences to the cast of their live action musical, and it’s pretty epic.
Auli’i Cravalho, aka the voice of Moana in the eponymous Disney animated film, will be belting out Part Of Your World in the live musical, complete with red hair and purple costume. Queen Latifah will terrify audiences as Ursula, no doubt slaying her rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls.
Shaggy – yes, you read that right – will play Sebastian the Crab. We can’t wait to hear his Under The Sea and Kiss The Girl. Full House’s John Stamos will make a cameo as the lobster-loving Chef Louis with Homeland’s Graham Phillips taking on Prince Eric.
“Forget under the sea (for a second),” Cravalho wrote on Instagram when the news of the production was announced. “I’m OVER THE MOON about this project! 5 November can’t come soon enough!”
How is the musical different from the movie? Well, it is. And it isn’t.
The Broadway musical version of The Little Mermaid is, like all Broadway musical versions of Disney films, remarkably similar to the cartoon upon which it is based. All of your favourite songs from the film are present in the musical with some added extras penned by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman – the team behind the music from the original – and Glenn Slater.
Some scenes that were possible in the cartoon simply can’t be staged with people who aren’t, you know, mermaids and fish. Remember how we meet Ariel and Flounder as they swim away from some sharks? That scene is removed from the musical and replaced with a new song for Ariel called The World Above in which she plays with a fork.
There are 10 new songs, many of which are given to Ariel to sing. This is a good thing because, if you can recall the 1989 original film, you’ll know that despite being the main character, Ariel only sings a few songs herself.
There’s also a key addition to the background and development of Ursula as a character. In the musical, Ursula is shown as the sister of King Triton, something that was originally mooted for inclusion in the film but was removed. In this version, though, Ursula and Triton are shown as the two children of Poseidon who, upon his death, are each given dominion over half of the ocean. Slowly, though, Ursula turns to dark magic and her jealousy of Ariel’s beauty and singing voice leads her to target the princess.
Will there be anything else new in The Little Mermaid Live! ? Yes. Producers have revealed that the production will be a “never-before-seen hybrid format” that combines the “beautifully intricate sets and costumes” of the Broadway play with “music from the original”.
It will also feature live performances from the cast as well as snippets of footage and animation from the 1989 animated film.
When is The Little Mermaid Live! released?
The Little Mermaid Live! will be on television on 5 November at 8pm EST on ABC in the US.

From Harper Bazaar: The Little Mermaid Live! Features a Moana Star, Shaggy, and Evil Chef John Stamos Auli’i Cravalho is the perfect Ariel, and Prince Eric is making us swoon.
BY AMY MACKELDEN OCT 8 2019, 9:26 AM EDT
The teaser trailer for ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! has finally arrived, and the cast is absolute perfection.
Though several characters aren't featured in the trailer, including Ariel's sidekick, Flounder, and her overbearing father, King Triton, we are given a glimpse at Ariel, played by the inimitable Auli'i Cravalho, best known for voicing the leading role in Moana, and the legendary Queen Latifah as iconic villain Ursula.
Not to be confused with Disney's live-action movie remake, ABC's special is set to hit our television screens on November 5. Here's everything we know so far about the cast of The Little Mermaid Live!.
Auli'i Cravalho as Ariel
Having already voiced a Disney "princess," Cravalho is perfectly cast as protagonist Ariel. Born and raised in Hawaii, Cravalho was just 14 years old when she got her big break voicing Moana of Motunui in Disney's 2016 animated film. The singer and actress revealed to People in 2015 that she almost didn't audition for the role but was spotted by a certain Oahu casting agent who convinced her otherwise.
"From baby time to now, I wanted to be a Disney princess and then I wanted to be a singer or an actress," she said. With her role in ABC's The Little Mermaid Live! Cravalho fulfills her dream a second time over.
Queen Latifah as Ursula
Screen icon Queen Latifah needs no introduction. As a singer, rapper, actress, and producer, Latifah is incredibly accomplished in the music, film, and TV industries. Latifah is already halfway to an EGOT, having checked off Grammy and Emmy wins. And if our first look at the Queen as antagonist Ursula is anything to go by, she's going to be gloriously terrifying in this role.
Shaggy as Sebastian
Grammy-winning '90s icon Shaggy, is set to portray Sebastian the crab in ABC's live version of the Disney musical. Judging by his physical transformation in the trailer, the Jamaican-born rapper has the look down in a red leather jacket, matching T-shirt, and red shades for the role. However, we're secretly hoping he slips into a full-size crab costume come showtime.
John Stamos as Chef Louis
John Stamos is well-known for being an accomplished actor and performer, but he's also a great singer. During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden in 2016, Stamos coincidentally performed the hit song "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid, proving he's more than ready to embark upon a role in the musical.
Stamos, who is set to play evil Chef Louis in the ABC show, can be seen in the trailer showing off an incredible mustache.
Graham Phillips as Prince Eric
Best known for his TV roles in The Good Wife, Dynasty, and Riverdale, Graham Phillips is also a seasoned Broadway performer. With his charismatic smile and his impressive vocal range, we are more than ready to see Phillips transform into a Disney heartthrob.
The Little Mermaid Live! airs on ABC on November 5.

From Inside The Magic: Disney shows first look at The Little Mermaid Live, reveals Ursula role
Posted on October 7, 2019 by Ryan Ogilvie Leave a comment
There’s a whole lot of Little Mermaid chat happening at Disney at the moment what with this special and a live-action adaptation on the way starring Halle Bailey.
While we eagerly await news on the new movie, last night during Kids Say the Darndest Things, Disney showed us just a small preview of what we can expect to see from The Little Mermaid Live! when it airs on November 5th on ABC.
You can check out the preview below:
The Wonderful World of Disney presents The Little Mermaid Live! has Moana star Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Shaggy as Sebastian, Disney superfan and Full House star John Stamos as Chef Louis, Graham Phillps as Prince Eric, and — just announced — Queena Latifah as Ursula.
Despite such a star-studded cast, the production does seem a bit cheesy and there have been a few fans calling this more of a spoof lookalike than a Broadway-style production.
That being said, this new special is hopefully a fitting tribute to the 1989 animated classic and a celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary — anyone else feeling old? The special is effectively a live-musical with performances from the stars alongside a broadcast of the original movie. The special will include costumes and sets designed specifically for the event and include music from the original film and the Broadway stage version, both composed by Alan Menken and featuring lyrics from Howard Ashman.
Hopefully, The Wonderful World of Disney presents The LiThe ttle Mermaid Live! is a suitable tribute to a movie that many of us grew up with and not something more fitting of a pantomime, only time will tell! We are huge fans of the cast, especially Auli’i Cravalho who we are almost certain will do a fantastic job as Ariel.

From Jezebel: Here Is John Stamos As a Murderous French Crab Chef
Rebecca Fishbein Yesterday 8:32amFiled to: TRAILERS
When we were little, my sister liked The Little Mermaid’s Chef Louis, the mustachioed French sea cook who tried unsuccessfully to boil Sebastian the crab alive. I always thought that was deeply weird, having not yet learned that everyone has their thing. But now I have seen John Stamos as Chef Louis, and I... get it? I think?
On Sunday, ABC dropped the teaser for The Little Mermaid Live! (not to be confused with the live Little Mermaid remake, because 1990s Disney is a never-ending cash cow), featuring Stamos as Sebastian’s tormenter. He’s got the stache, the red scarf, the thick brows, the oversized hat, and the staggering confidence of a man who does not yet know he’s about to be bested by an anthropomorphic crustacean.
It’s kind of working:
If you’ve forgotten about the original Louis, here he is, teaching small children how to debone a fish (and how to do it in French!):
I look forward to watching Stamos chase Shaggy (who plays Sebastian) around with a butcher’s knife. I look much less forward to texting my sister and telling her she was right about Chef Louis, because I mocked her mercilessly in our youth and I’m afraid I will have to make up for it somehow. Thanks for NOTHING, Uncle Jesse.
The Little Mermaid Live! airs on ABC on November 5.

From Yahoo: Check Out Queen Latifah as Ursula and John Stamos' Crazy Mustache In New 'Little Mermaid Live!' Teaser Jeff Mazzeo TheBlastOctober 8, 2019
ABC has released the first promo for "The Little Mermaid Live" and we finally get a look at some of our favorite celebs in character.
The live adaptation of the Disney classic looks magical. Auli'i Cravalho looks amazing as Ariel but all the fans were excited to see Queen Latifah as the mysterious sea-witch Ursula.
Queen Latifah
Latifah was sporting Ursula's classic white hair that sticks straight up and has dark eyeshadow that highlights her captivating eyes.
From the short teaser, you see that Latifah is sporting the necklace she uses to steal Ariel's voice and her form-fitting, strapless gown.
John Stamos
It was a little more jarring to John Stamos as Chef Louis. Dressed like a French chef and wearing a comical mustache.
Auli'i Cravalho and Graham Phillips
Of course, Graham Phillips, who will play Prince Eric, looks dreamy.
Shaggy
Shaggy will play Sebastian the crab but his outfit doesn't look much different than his normal clothes to us.
The live musical event will feature music from the original animated film and the Broadway stage version.
The Wonderful World of Disney's "The Little Mermaid Live!" airs Tuesday, November 5 to honor the 30th anniversary of the animated version.
This production is not to be confused with the live-action feature adaptation starring Halle Bailey as Ariel. That project starts production in early 2020 according to reports.
