Big fan of hers and I was a bit confused by this news as well. She seems to only really be critical of Snow White for issues of stranger danger and consent, not so much the "marry a man you just met" stuff. Again, I don't entirely agree but I respect her opinion. I posted about my full thoughts in the Keira Knightley thread: littleariel.proboards.com/post/52371/threadTo sum up what I think: Yes some princesses are products of their time, they aren't all perfect, they make mistakes - that's why I like them. It wouldn't be realistic to have films about perfect characters in perfect situations, nor would any true entertainment value come from that premise. In my opinion I do appreciate that Kristen is at least making a dialogue with her children and letting them watch these films but also talking about them afterward, rather than flat-out banning them. If Keira Knightley had said she was banning movies for her kids because she doesn't want them getting hooked too early to the screen, that I would understand a little more, but she was making claims about the films that based on in-depth analysis, just aren't even true. I think critics of the princess films should at least get a chance to watch them again, especially the older ones, and try to put themselves in these characters' shoes. Snow White is technically "asleep" but presumed DEAD. It's "sleeping death". "So beautiful in death that the dwarfs could not find it in their hearts to bury her". And the only solution, which I believe she is unaware of, is true love's kiss. It's not like she could wake up at any moment mid-death and say "oh yeah if my prince comes along and wakes me from the slumber of death, I totally consent to him kissing me to bring me back to life". Same with Aurora. If you were passed out and the only solution to save you from death was for someone to resuscitate you giving mouth-to-mouth CPR, that's not something you can or can't consent to because it's literally a matter of life and death. Sure there are Do Not Resuscitate orders where depending on a medical issue you can make sure in advance, if that's your wish, that nobody resuscitates you. An ethics paper I read online words this better than I can: But that's not what we're dealing with here. Everyone who mattered to Snow White wanted her back, we saw all seven dwarves somberly memorialize her in a very sad scene before the prince shows up on the scene, to which they gladly clear the path to let him see her. The dwarfs don't know that Snow White could be brought back to life by the prince, they are just being good people and they are probably aware that Snow White meant a lot to him and let him visit her. Let's think about this for a second. I'm sure Snow White would rather be alive than not. So in a way, she subjectively (in a way that is dependent on the mind for existence) consents to be kissed, based on the principle of attitudinal consent, and the matter of life and death. So when the prince does kiss Snow White, what happens? The dwarfs are flabbergasted that this kiss brought her back to life, positively overjoyed to see Snow White again! And she looks darn happy to be alive, and with her prince again! A win-win situation for all! Now was it handled in the most perfect way? Probably not. I do like in Frozen that Kristoff asks Anna if he may kiss her and she replies "we may" before they do, BUT Snow White doesn't even get to because she's effectively dead and the only thing that would bring her back to life is her prince's kiss. Now it would be a completely different situation if she were asleep and her waking up and being rid of this spell had nothing to do with being kissed by a prince. I think there is where the problem lies, since that is that awful area where you see women being used and taken advantage of when they are unable to give consent. But in those cases, it's not like the horrible things these men are doing to the women will "save" them in any way, and it's not like these men even respect these women. It's established that the prince visits Snow White to pay his respects. He takes his hat off, he is visiting her dead body, it's really sad! He gives her a parting kiss, unaware that "the victim of Sleeping Death can only be revived by Love's First Kiss". Is it the best plot device? Probably not. But it completes her "Someday My Prince Will Come" story arc established at the beginning after she first met the prince. Also the stranger danger thing is even addressed in the plot! (we see Grumpy in a brief moment of un-grumpiness lol) Snow doesn't heed their advice because pities the old hag and has trouble saying no to people since she's SUCH a nice person, which would be her fatal flaw because oops, the hag gave her a poison apple to taste that brought on the curse of sleeping death. The animals around Snow White have an idea that the old woman is truly the evil queen, or at least a bad person not to be trusted, since they try to shoo her away. Snow White says "shame on you!" to the birds for "frightening a poor old lady" and she apologizes to the old hag on behalf of her woodland friends. She sees the goodness in everyone. She's a glass half-full kinda gal. She likes to think that people are fundamentally good and wants to give her a chance. It's a naive way to think for sure, especially in modern times, but you can't fault her for trying to be a good person! Especially after the old woman tricks Snow White further by pretending to have a cardiac episode- now Snow White is fully pitying her and trying to help out however she can. The old woman further deceives Snow White: "And because you've been so good to poor old Granny, I'll share a secret with you. This is no ordinary apple. It's a magic wishing apple." Now that's an offer Snow can't refuse, the poor girl. She's being taken advantage of by being rewarded for her kindness with death, essentially. It's quite sad! We don't hear all of Snow White's dream, but it ends with "..and that he will carry me away to his castle...where we will live happily ever after." The old woman pesters Snow White to take a bite immediately as to not let the wish grow cold. And her wish doesn't immediately come true because she then collapses. BUT what she's described in her wish IS what happens at the very end of the story! It's not as bad of a story as people might like to believe if you look into the script and watch the movie again.
