I've been singing the songs all day, I really loved this film's soundtrack (dare I say more than the first film? I need to think about that some more). There were a few songs I didn't much care for, but every film or musical has a few songs you're gonna skip, it's inevitable. Though tbh I do think the story of the first film just sorta works better. I wish some of the backstory events that were established here were better set up in the first film. I feel like Frozen wasn't written with Frozen 2 in mind. But they did their best to make it work. For what it was, I enjoyed it. The emotions are heightened, the stakes are higher, the adventure and mystery are really captivating, and it's a little darker in tone and the colors of the film as well. One huge moment of comedic relief came from a character & song that I was NOT expecting! Most of all, I really love how Anna & Elsa's relationship has strengthened. They both trust each other a lot more and understand one another. It isn't perfect, as the story goes, but by the end they've learned even more about each other and the dynamic they play in each other's lives. That was really neat to see. Also Olaf is all over the place in this movie, I think this movie had me caring about him more than I had in anything else he's been in. The exposition was a bit too much for my taste - I wanted more "show don't tell", and while they did show a lot, they did tell a lot with the showing. Though I was able to predict the truth of the backstory involving the parents as it all unfolded (and believe me, I avoided just about every spoiler out there, but maybe I'm just getting better at predicting these things?) some of the events of the epilogue were completely unexpected for me. And to be quite honest, being a fan of The Little Mermaid was the reason I was able to predict Anna & Elsa's parents' backstory 😂you'll figure it out when you see it, trust me. I did appreciate how the backstory does essentially debunk some of the more bizarre Disney theories regarding Frozen and Tangled, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, etc. I'm SO glad this movie pretty much shuts all of those down lol.
Was it better than the first film overall? I don't really have a definitive answer yet. I don't think the two are super comparable. F1 is set up like a musical, the beats are all moments a musical would have and while there is a grand adventure, it just all lends itself really well to being a musical. F2, while having some amazing songs, feels more like an adventure film first over a musical film. And while I love me some adventure, I personally prefer the structure that a musical film has, but that's just me. I do think this film was more character-driven than story-driven, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it wasn't what I was expecting. I think this one was geared more towards older kids, but still had plenty of moments little ones would enjoy. I don't know if it really hit that balance of working for all audiences at all times like the original did though, there were some moments that felt like they could be in the "Frozen Extras" like Frozen Fever, Olaf's Frozen Adventure, etc. While it was darker, I wish they would've just really gone for it in a few cases. Major bad things were done, which I really liked seeing, but then un-done by the end, and there wasn't a lot of consequence.
I feel like I need to watch it a couple more times to really pinpoint my thoughts. I did really enjoy it and hope to see it again and gain more insight. But I didn't get that initial feeling with the first film where I was immediately sold onto the Frozen train like, that feeling was so magical, and I didn't quite get that this time. Not to say it's a bad film, it's not! I'm just really iffy on a few things. But I will be listening and singing this new soundtrack, since at least that part immediately sold me.
