An interesting thing I discovered last year was the Tilles Center a theater at Long Island University Brookville on January Fourth was to show the 1989m film with a live orchestra playing along I found this out BY CHNACE and waited to get through the very least Christmas to pursue a screening ONLY TO GET a bunch of WHAT??? First it was canceled Then it was Not THEN TICKET SCAMMERS AND THE FACT THAT THE BOX OFFICE WAS CLOSED FOR A WEEK AFTER CALLING THE BOX OFFICE ON THA SATURDAY Yeah the show was cancelled
a mixed bag of feelings for I would have considered this despite the triple figure cost BUT the last time I was at that theater lets just say was NOT one of my happier moments to (sorry Ms. Lara (darn emotional Today January 6th on the otherhand
as I type this I watch the film for it was this very day THIRTY years ago I first saw the Disney Film after a few setbacks Went to a Grand Union before show and got a Cadbury bar (When those were BIG) and went to a mediocre theater near where I was working at the time
Go in to a somewhat half full half empty theater with a mixed group of childless adults families and a fewe "loners Not knowing WHAT to expect
It was a beautiful and yet Bittersweet moment of my life The film as I watch now was what I expected AND more the first scene of the boat remember saying NICE
As it continued I saw what I had rea and heard about at the time the "fluid" animation the expressive blue eyes the way she bites her lip...………………………….
and unlike most people knew the original story and so far the adaptation was fairly decent despite revisions to story Then seeing (lest in theater) the ENTIRE musical number yep the critics were right pause Ariel is gonna sing now
OK I remember in the theater thinking about a documentary about L Frank Baum (Created to promote Journey Back to Oz) of how Frank Baum used the inspiration of suffregettes to create his female characters in the book series (His wife and mother in law were suffregetes) If you ever read the original OZ books written in most cases BDFORE 1920 the female characters were NOT passive Also a FACT Wyoming is called the Equality State due to if you were 18 or over REGARDLESS of sex color you could VOTE was in 19th century due to then as now a population that DOES NOT equal the states size vs say Rhode Island
The song is done the another beautiful sequence appears The Fireworks accompanied by a gorgeous combo of voice an instruments
then the jig then FLASHBACK The Readers Digest Version of the original story comes back right down to sort of the statue
AND the images of what I saw at Disney MGM that summer YES in July of 1989 was at the Florida facility and saw Model sheets of Sebastain Ursula and a Color sheet of Eric I liked the designs of Ursula and Sebastain and max the dog Nice Disney touch paying homage to OTHER canines thogh I my self am a Cat person Then comes the storm not bad and true to the spirit of the story as we see some "hints" as to character traits Ericsaving his crew Max then Ariel rescues him...…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
pause omg this is gonna be emotional...………………...OMG OMG
is he dead? then the song starts
I FELL IN LOVE...………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
SO MANY EMOTIONS THE ESSEENCE OF THE STORY AT THAT POINT THE TONE MY THEN CURRENT LIFE STATUS
THE JOY THE LONGING...…………………………………………………………………..FROM THAT POINT ON TWENTY FIVE MINUTES IN
I WAS HOOKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the scene with Ariel's face in the sunlight HOW I WISH I COULD WAKE UP TO THAT EVERY DAY?
what WOULD I GIVE FOR THAT what (tears on keypad now)……………………………………………………………………………………:(
ok now compose compose
From that point on the movie just got better and better The Under the Sea moment the ensuing drama the conflicts the despair and Ariel's Line "WHY don't you go tell my Father You're good at that The musical cues And seeing for the first time in the Theater the Under the sea sequence (Was on end credits of Entertainment Tonite the night before)
THEN Journey to Ursula's lair nice little subtle touches seeing more scenes and nuances (such as Jack Nicholson's grin on Ursula)then the song AND THE TRANSFORMATION THE MUSIC ARIEL'S VOICE ECHOING ARIEL BREAKING THE SURFACE thenAriel's song hauntingly played by Eric as he TRIES to find her THEN WE FIND ARIEL WITH LEGS FEET AND TOES AND SHE CAN WIGGLE THEM
Then the horror on Ariel's face when Sebastain leaves to tell Triton only for it to turn to sadness in cue with "Part of your World"
Then the next batch of scenes flow nicely to LOUIE (RIP Rene Auberjonois) beaten by Sebastain then to possible hope Could these two come together as Ariel drifts of to bed ending her first day as a human
Day two begins pretty straight forward as the tour begins Scuttles attempt at squaking Romeo and Juliet all the elements come together as it looks like they will...…………………………………………………….oh yeah those eels
as night falls Eric still loyally hopes to find his love but decides to see Ariel but then...………………………………………….
Ariel then discovers Eric is getting Married THE ULTIMATE SYMBOL of Love (lest in fairy tales but...……………………………………………………………………………….
AND as the ship sails away our favorite red headed mermaid has met total defeat (Something I can relate to all to well) BUT THEN HOPE then nope THEN HOPE THEN ARIEL GETS HER VOICE BACK AND IN THE THEATER ATHE FEMALE HALF OF A COUPLE GETS EXCITED AS ERIC AND ARIEL ARE ABOUT too late
more back and forth the final battle remembering when a witch dies magic she casts dies with her
HAPPY ENDING oh yeah NOT QUITE
there's just one problem left and as I knew going in A HAPPY ENDING
(unlike the original tale)
then the end credits where I distinctly heard a father say to his children "That was a good movie we should consider buying it if it come out on tape well it was 1990
Thirty years LORD SO much to say and I only scratched the surface here I just leave for now as the credits roll that This was an experience for me not since Star wars in 1977 (he ONLY film this can be compared too really and I can not imagine my life horrid as it is several stories there without it
HAPPY Thirty Ariel AND the FIRST Little Mermaid item I bought of MANY more thoughts later
