In 2015, Disney took a shot at making a live-action version of their 1950s fan favorite, Cinderella. Actress Lily James was hired to star as the titular Cinderella, Richard Madden as Prince Kit, and Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother among other notable actors. The Kenneth Branagh-directed Disney creation went on to make over $542 million at the box office, and was credited with some of the best costume designs in cinematic history.
After recently passing the five-year anniversary of the remake, we're taking a look at 10 things we didn't know about the film until now. Keep reading for Easter eggs, rumors, and secrets only Disney can create.
10 A Special Shout-Out To The Rest Of Disney
When Ella enters the ballroom, it's obvious Prince Kit has his eye on the wondrous beauty. The pair begin to dance and take over the ballroom, much to every single female's chagrin. The film work and pageantry were remarkable, but if we take our eyes off Ella and Kit for a moment, we'd notice that there are dresses in the background that share a remarkable similarity to other Disney princesses. It's been said that dresses from Belle, Tiana, Aurora, Snow White, Mulan, and Ariel can all be seen in the background.
9 Lily James' Waist Was Not Made Thinner By CGI
It's been mocked for years that the proportions of Disney's famous princesses' are grotesquely unrealistic. Each princess is insanely thin, has a very small waist, gorgeous hair, and big bold eyes. Knowing how damaging this can be to young viewers, some fans thought it was in poor taste for Disney to make Lily James's waist thinner to match the animated version.
However, James and director Kenneth Branagh have mentioned they did not use CGI to make her waist smaller. Her waist was already naturally thin, and with the help of a corset — and how big the skirt of the dress was — her waist appeared even smaller.
8 I Spy Mickey
Disney has been known to throw in little Mickey Mouse nods in its movies for years; it takes an eagle-eyed fan to point out these small mouse-shaped heads in the backgrounds of newer movies. In the case of 2015's Cinderella, fans noted the shapes on the glass windows in front of Ella's home look like hidden Mickeys. While the ears are usually bigger than the head, this could be a subtle shout-out to Walt Disney.
7 Recognize That Hum?
What makes the story of Cinderella so darling is that she turned many negatives in her life to positives. As an in-house maid, Ella didn't have the good fortune of making or having friends. What she did instead was create friendships with animals. From horses to mice to ducks, Ella was kind to all of nature's beings.
In the 2015 version of Cinderella, we see Ella feeding the animals as part of her chores. To many, she's simply humming a tune while feeding but if you listen closely, she's humming "Sing, Sweet Nightingale"; a special song from the animated version.
6 Lily James' Dress Was Tricky
Now that we know Lily James's waist wasn't digitally altered, it makes us wonder about the dresses she wore throughout the film. After all, it wasn't just her iconic blue ball gown that looked exquisite — even her dresses for chores were stunning.
When it came time to wear the blue ball gown that so many fans recognize from the Disney movie, it took an hour to get her into it. And if it took an hour to get into it, just imagine the complications if she had to go to the restroom! It's been said that James would do her business before getting dressed and if it was an emergency, the crew made a "portable toilet" that actually slid under her dress for her to use.
5 Snow? Is That You?
Towards the end of the film when Nonso Anozie's character was assisting Drisella and Anastasia with the glass slipper, fans noticed an Easter egg in the background. There appears to be a small painting hanging on the wall in the background when Ella approaches Kit that depicts Snow White. While it would have been cool to have an old school illustration from the original Cinderella tale, it's a sweet shout-out to a fellow Disney story.
4 Disney's Approach To The Film Wasn't As Dark
Most Disney fans are aware that the tale of Cinderella comes from Brothers Grimm, but there are other versions of the tale that aren't quite as dark as the Grimm version. Apparently, Disney chose the one created by Charles Perrault, a French author. Perrault's version includes the Fairy Godmother and giant pumpkin, while Brothers Grimm one includes more gruesome details about toes being cut off in order to fit a foot to the glass slipper. Maybe one day a scary version of Cinderella will be released. Is Tim Burton available?
3 Emma Watson Vs. Lily James
Before Lily James was cast as Ella in the 2015 live-action remake, actress Emma Watson was offered the role first. Watson said that she didn't know Disney was creating a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast at the time, but when the opportunity presented itself, she felt much more connected to Belle than she did to Cinderella. And she's not wrong. Watson's portrayal of Belle was magical and felt completely authentic to Watson's natural charms.
2 Prince Kit Had A Bulging Situation
Richard Madden portrayed Ella's love interest, Prince Kit. Madden was dressed in the same handsome attire as the prince in the animated version, but with this being a Disney movie, some things were trickier in the costume department than expected. With Madden's pants being so tight, his bulge was an ongoing problem throughout filming. Costume designers had to play around with different jock straps and trousers to create a more seamless look. However, all the tricks to make his attire G-rated were incredibly painful for Madden during filming.
1 The Magical Glass Slipper Wasn't Meant To Be Worn
Beside's Ella's blue dress, the next important part of her outfit were the glass slippers. Sandy Powell, the film's costume designer, noted the slippers were entirely created out of Swarovski crystals, and were never intended to be worn. They were merely a prop. In the scenes where Ella is walking and running, she's actually wearing sneakers. The dress was so big that the viewer can't see what kind of footwear she's wearing.
