I truly never thought I'd live to see the day, but it looks like Nintendo came to some agreement with Disney and Square Enix - Sora is the last fighter added to Super Smash Bros Ultimate!
Apparently someone who works at Disney Music leaked this information on 4chan on July 30th because they said Nintendo had called the week prior to request rights to several tracks from Kingdom Hearts to use in a digital event on October 5th, which is when the Nintendo Direct event ended up happening yesterday where Sora was announced. I hadn't heard about this leak until after the announcement, but I guess this anonymous leaker was correct!
I'm just so gobsmacked about this news. It doesn't take much to shock me these days but seeing Sora announced in Smash was something that people had joked about for years, nobody thought it would ever happen because of the rights being with Disney and Square Enix and Nintendo trying to work that out just sounded like a nightmare, but they really did it!! And apparently he was the most requested fighter when Nintendo put out their Fighter Ballot 6 years ago, back when Satoru Iwata was the head of Nintendo he had wanted Sora in the game too, but tragically he passed away not long after the results were in and Nintendo had been holding onto the results of the ballot for years until they could get Sora in the game, which has taken a while due to the legal issues (mainly with Disney). So it was one of his last wishes to have Sora in the game and Nintendo worked really hard to make that happen! It was a little emotional to hear about, I'll be honest I cried watching the announcement video, seeing the Mickey charm and the keyblade and hearing the orchestral rendition of Simple and Clean/Hikari as Sora flew across the scene to join the Smash crew, with the whole announcement culminating in an epic freeze frame handshake between Mario and Sora. What a moment!
Connecting it to TLM, Ariel did make a split second appearance around the 7:03 mark of the above video in the October 5th Nintendo Direct announcement of Sora in Smash when Masahiro Sakurai (the creator of Super Smash Bros) was giving a brief explanation of Kingdom Hearts to viewers of the event. It showed Atlantica from the first game.
Sora in Smash appears in his KH1 form but I think they have added in some of his other looks from the other games. I don’t know if any additional characters from the franchise will make appearances or if any Disney characters will be seen either for that matter. Though the full video lays it out pretty well, and as for the rest we’ll have to wait and see!
Curious to hear your thoughts, any Kingdom Hearts or Smash fans out there?
UPDATE: KH is also coming to the Nintendo Switch! All of the games 1.5 + 2.5, 2.8, and even KH3 and Re Mind! That's a lot of KH announcement for this Nintendo event, and it being the 20th anniversary it's cool to see! But there's a catch. They're not the proper ports but the cloud versions that must be streamed rather than downloaded, and it requires you to have a fast internet speed. Which may not be possible for everyone, plus you get things like input delay, so that's a minor bummer.
