by Evily Giannopoulos Peros, Public Relations Manager, Disney Signature Experiences
Over the weekend, attendees at Destination D23 got a sneak peek at two exciting new entertainment offerings being developed for the Disney Wish. Today, we’re unveiling even more details about these original stage spectaculars — an innovative, Broadway-style take on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Little Mermaid” and an embarkation day celebration helmed by Captain Minnie, Goofy and an all-star cast of Disney and Pixar characters — plus a very first look at the all-new pirate deck party coming to our newest Disney Cruise Line ship next summer.
A Treasure Retold – ‘Disney The Little Mermaid’
“Disney The Little Mermaid” will be an original Broadway-style stage adaptation of the renowned 1989 Disney Animation film developed exclusively for the Disney Wish. During this one-of-a-kind theatrical production, audiences will rediscover the iconic scenes, acclaimed music and beloved characters of “The Little Mermaid” while experiencing the story like never before.
In this modern-day retelling, the curtain will rise on an enchanted treasure chest at the moment it is discovered by a group of storytellers, led by a special young woman who has the power to unlock its magic. As they uncover the whozits and whatzits galore hidden within the trunk, the storytellers will take on the roles of Ariel, Ursula, Prince Eric, Sebastian, Flounder and more, bringing to life the immersive undersea world right before guests’ eyes. They’ll put their own contemporary spin on the timeless story of a young woman’s search for independence, love and a place in the world.
“Disney The Little Mermaid” will feature innovative theatrical design, dazzling special effects, artistic choreography, and a reimagined script and score that will surprise and delight guests of all ages.
New orchestrations of favorite songs like “Part of Your World,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Under the Sea” will enchant audiences with moving ensemble pieces and breathtaking production numbers. Unexpectedly playful scenic designs and state-of-the-art video projections will transform the Walt Disney Theatre into a 360-degree undersea environment. Contemporary, interpretive costuming will reflect the show’s unique blending of a modern setting and a mystical, fantastical story. Cutting-edge puppetry will animate fantastical sea creatures and characters such as Sebastian, Flounder, Scuttle, and Flotsam and Jetsam in never-before-seen ways.http://instagram.com/p/CWogpumr9J9

This is really exciting!! This seems to be entirely its own thing not based entirely on the original film, nor the stage version, nor the live action version either actually! I think it may take some influence from the live action, and certainly I'd love to see casting reflect that but it seems actually that the role of Ariel is more fluid and will be taken on by actresses of all ethnicities and appearances, which is especially intriguing! If at all possible, and if they're looking for me, this is one I'll definitely keep tabs on when browsing the Disney Parks Audition webpage!

I agree, it's a new version of the story placed in part in modern era, in part in the mythical Little Mermaid world.
I'm very curious about this new take of the story.

A newly reimagined version of The Little Mermaid as a stage show is set to debut on the new Disney Cruise Line ship the Wish! It features a lot of puppetry, the puppets look like the original designs from the film as we've seen in other versions like the ABC live special. We'll also get to hear more of Ariel's inner voice in songs like Kiss The Girl where she's physically obviously unable to speak or sing but only the audience will get to hear her inner thoughts (like in the Broadway version). Ariel also is confirmed to be exclusively cast as women of color, which ties in with the live action film. So this version will have many elements from the original and elements from Broadway, ABC live, Hollywood Bowl, and the upcoming live action film - a mix of classic & modernized. I know somebody who is currently rehearsing in this production and from everything I've heard, it looks like it's going to be absolutely fantastic! New details. Source: www.clickorlando.com/entertainment/2022/03/09/disney-cruise-line-shares-details-about-little-mermaid-show-on-disney-wish/#//Disney Cruise Line shares details about ‘Little Mermaid’ show on Disney Wish Ship sets sail from Port Canaveral on July 14

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Disney Cruise Line has shared even more details about the all-new show “Disney the Little Mermaid” aboard its new cruise ship, the Disney Wish.
The ship’s maiden voyage is scheduled for July 14 from Port Canaveral.
Disney on Wednesday shared new renderings showing what the Broadway-style show will look like inside the ship’s Walt Disney Theater.
Disney first announced the show in November during a D23 fan event at Disney’s Contemporary resort, saying the show will have a reimagined script and score.
“In this modern-day retelling, audiences will rediscover the iconic scenes, acclaimed music and beloved characters of the film, as a cast of contemporary storytellers put their own spin on the timeless tale,” Disney leaders explained in a blog post. “The creative minds at Disney Cruise Line have joined forces with a team of top Broadway talent to develop an all-new stage adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” exclusively for the Disney Wish.”
“Poor Unfortunate Souls” during “Disney The Little Mermaid” on Disney Wish (Disney Cruise Line)
Disney Cruise Line said the show will feature innovative theatrical design, special effects, artistic choreography and cutting-edge puppetry.
Leaders said the popular hit song “Under the Sea” will be the show’s biggest number, featuring characters like Sebastian and Flounder.
“Throughout the show, playful scenic designs and state-of-the-art video projections will transform the Walt Disney Theatre into a 360-degree undersea environment,” leaders pointed out.
A Whole New World of Family Entertainment on the Disney Wish (Disney Parks Blog)
It will also feature dazzling and jaw-dropping moments during the show’s other big moments and songs, including “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”
“Disney the Little Mermaid” is one of two shows guests onboard the ship will get to experience. The other show, ‘Seas the Adventure,’ is a delightful original musical that features Captain Minnie and so many other popular Disney characters.

Of course, this is just a piece of the many adventures onboard.
When guests step inside the new ship, they will be able to explore Disney’s immersive worlds including Frozen, Star Wars, Marvel Superheroes and of course, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and their pals. The Disney Wish will be powered by liquified natural gas, or LNG, one of the cleanest-burning fuels available. At approximately 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, the ship will be slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

I read there will be a twist on the story, but I think it's partially inspired by the new movie. Yes, I hope someone posts this new show online.

Some new details released, including concept art for Ariel's costumes! I'm very intrigued by the special effects and projection mapping that may be involved with this production! I think they've done a really clever job making the costuming fluid for musical theatre storytelling on a stage, recognizable enough for it to look very close to the original outfits from the film, but also fresh and unique enough to be something completely new and exciting! Bravi tutti to everyone involved! It's also been confirmed, at least from what I'm aware internally from people I know working on the show, that in this production Ariel will exclusively be played by women of color! Halle's impact!! More images here (there is a typo on this website, disregard "Disney Dream", the ship this show is debuting on is the "Disney Wish"): disneycruiselineblog.com/2022/03/designing-the-disney-wish-video-series-broadway-caliber-stage-shows-at-the-walt-disney-theatre/?fbclid=IwAR2EKDlLiBCH4odU2rpfpgA1VVCIoQFv35OuHHciIaX8-wEcttABBn8cgpg

Thanks for the wonderful photos! I love so much the Ariel's concept!
Halle Bailey's Ariel is already so iconic that even this show will represent Ariel as in the movie before the film even hits theaters!

When it comes to Disney breaking the barriers of inclusivity, we can see that the company is striving towards creating a greater tomorrow where everyone can feel that they belong.
Recently, Disney has been under the spotlight after not commenting on Florida’s new “Don’t Say Gay” bill for so long. After massive outcries from fans, Disney CEO Bob Chapek finally addressed the issue head-on at Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting where he announced the company would be donating $5 million to the Human Rights Campaign. The Human Rights Campaign stated they would not accept the donation, as they believed The Walt Disney Company was not acting in a “meaningful” way.
Lately, we have seen Disney progress towards a much more inclusive environment when it comes to both their theme parks and on-screen entertainment.
We have seen Cast Member dress code change when it comes to the “Disney Look,” allowing Cast Members to express themselves more while at work. It also allows more opportunity for others who want to work for Disney, as before the change, anyone with visible tattoos that they could not cover with a costume would not be allowed to work. This also existed for certain hairstyles, colors, piercings, nails, and more.
The Walt Disney Company has created an all-new initiative called Reimagining Tomorrow: Where We All Belong. On the new website, it states:
At Disney, inclusion is for everyone. Reimagine Tomorrow is our way of amplifying underrepresented voices and untold stories as well as championing the importance of accurate representation in media and entertainment. Because we are all greater than a single story and we all deserve to feel seen, heard and understood.
There is then also a spot for visitors on the site to say what kind of stories they want the world to see. Once you select an option, you can learn more about someone or a project Disney highlights in that category.
Disney has also listed out their intentions for this new initiative.
To make progress that ensures our workforce reflects the market. To establish inclusion standards across all Disney General Entertainment content. By 2022, 50% of regular and recurring characters across Disney General Entertainment scripted content will come from underrepresented groups. Over $100M Charitable Giving to programs serving underrepresented communities (Fiscal Year 2020). To ensure we direct more than 50% of our annual charitable giving to programs serving underrepresented communities. To put the responsibility for an inclusive culture in the hands of our leaders and employees through comprehensive education and engagement efforts.
We have started to see iconic Disney characters that have been presented as Caucasian for years such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Tinker Bell from Peter Pan be cast by Halle Bailey and Yara Shahidi, two Black actresses for the live-action recreations of the story, but when it comes to the Parks, the princesses we meet are often reflective of their cartoon creation.
Now, on the Disney Wish, it seems that the new The Little Mermaid musical may be looking to cast an actress of color to play Ariel. This would be the first time we have seen a Disney performer who is representing a princess in the Parks or on the Disney Cruise Line break from the stereotype that we have seen for years, if Disney does proceed to cast an actress of color as their concept art indicates. We have, however, seen Disney on Broadway break these boundaries in the past with shows like Frozen.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid will feature innovative theatrical design, dazzling special effects, artistic choreography, and a reimagined script and score that will surprise and delight guests of all ages. “Under the Sea” will be the show’s biggest production number, complete with incredible vocals, show-stopping choreography and plenty of special effects.
Disney Parks shared a video of all the new shows coming to the Wish.

More on the Disney Wish
The ship will be flooded with activities and areas to explore, just as amazing as the suite itself! Captain Minnie and Mickey Mouse will greet you. On top of that, Guests can team up with Moana to navigate their canoes beyond the reef, helping Tiana cook up the perfect pot of her father’s favorite gumbo, summoning Tinker Bell to give the Disney Wish an extra dash of pixie dust and diving into the East Australian Current (EAC) with Nemo and friends. Check out more of the offerings below!
We have already heard of the progress coming along on the new Princess and the Frog attraction that will replace Splash Mountain’s racist undertone scenes due to the Song of the South IP, as well as changing the storyline on both Walt Disney World Resort’s and Disneyland Resort’s Jungle Cruise attraction to ensure cultural appropriation disappears.
What do you think of Disney’s potential decision to be more inclusive with their casting?
