With the live-action The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, set to be released in 2023, and many more live-action Disney adaptions continually being released over the last decade, Disney fanatics are eager to see what they'll do with this classic.
The animated The Little Mermaid, released in 1989, is still one of the most beloved Disney films to date. While it has a lot of fans, the film also has some viewers that found some issues with the film. Some Reddit fans shared their unpopular opinions about this cherished Disney Princess story.

It's Better Than Beauty And The Beast
Belle dancing with the beast.
Beauty and the Beast is considered one of the best Disney princesses movies ever. However, some Reddit users think The Little Mermaid takes the lead. Reddit user weezleifyoupleezle said, "I don’t even know why Beauty and the Beast was nominated for a Golden Globe back in the day, and “The little mermaid” wasn’t? The songs in B&B are worse, the characters are obnoxious, and the romance is honestly... kinda gross."
While everyone has their own taste when it comes to Disney films, Beauty and the Beast is widely considered one of the best of their films of all time. The Little Mermaid is a classic favorite, but it has yet to surpass this other classic.

Triton Didn't Respect Ariel
King Triton from The Little Mermaid
While many fans love Ariel's father, there are some fans that think he was a below-par father and didn't try hard enough to communicate with her. Reddit user FuturologyDiscussion said, "it's totally on Triton for making his kid feel like she couldn't talk to him."
However, most people take into consideration that Triton had a lot of responsibility outside of his children, which was difficult as a single parent, and Ariel was a strong-willed, rebellious teenager. One lesson The Little Mermaid teaches the audience is that open communication and listening can do a lot of good.

The Plot Was All About Blind Love
Ariel dragging Prince Eric to shore
Some viewers of the film felt that the whole plot was based on Ariel doing whatever she wanted to do in order to be with a man she instantly fell in love with. One Reddit user said, "The whole 'I’m gonna sacrifice so much for a dude I haven’t even properly met' just doesn’t sit with me."
However, many fans would wholeheartedly disagree with these opinions. It is clear from the very beginning of the film that Ariel is fascinated with the human world and yearns to explore it. While most Disney princess movies center around a love story, Ariel is also considered heroic for saving Eric's life before she chooses to leave the sea and gain legs.

Ariel Could Have Written To Eric
The Little Mermaid, Ariel and Eric
One of the main plot points in the film is that Ariel gives her voice to the sea-witch Ursula, therefore unable to communicate with Eric who she is and what she did for him. However, some Reddit users find this concept completely unrealistic. Reddit user SasoDuck said, "The Little Mermaid is a dumb movie because Ariel could have just written notes to the Prince explaining her curse and gotten it fixed almost immediately."
What this viewer failed to consider is that there is no indication in the film that Ariel knows how to write or even read in the way humans do - except, of course, the moment that she signs her name. However, this may be the only thing she knows! While The Little Mermaid is based on a literary tale, that doesn't mean literacy was largely considered in the development.

Ursula Had A Point
Ursula in The Little Mermaid
Ursula is the villain in the film, tricking Ariel into giving up her voice and eventually attempting to take over Atlantis. However, some viewers felt that Ursula wasn't as terrible as she appeared to be. Reddit user Hot_Carry2617 said, "Ursula did not deserve her fate, that was a legal document and Ariel signed it."
While some people appreciate Ursula's character and find her somewhat likable, she's far from a fan favorite. People may know the danger of signing a contract, Ariel was an impressionable, desperate young girl that Ursula clearly took advantage of.

The Happy Ending Wasn't Earned
When Eric saves Ariel from Ursula and the trident ends up back in Triton's hands, Ariel is able to marry the prince and live happily ever after. While Disney movies are known for this type of ending, some viewers felt it wasn't earned. Reddit user MysteryGirlWhite said, "It all ends with Triton giving her what she wants with no indication whatsoever that she learned anything because Disney needs a happy ending."
While Ariel had a lot of help along the way after she made the deal with the sea witch, many fans would argue it was Tritan that needed to learn the lesson. Ariel wanted to see more of the world and live with the humans, and in the conclusion, Tristan learns to get past his bigotry and understand his daughter's desires.

Ariel Should Have Saved Herself
The Little Mermaid Ursula Ariel
While it's not uncommon for the prince to save the day in classical Disney princess movies, some fans were not happy Ariel needed saving. Reddit user middenway said, "That Ariel becomes a victim and Eric has to save her in the finale is what really bothered me. I wanted her to play an active role in freeing herself right to the last."
However, in consideration of the overall plot, he was simply returning the favor. While it is true he saves her in the finale, Ariel initially saves Eric after he ends up nearly drowning in the sea due to a storm that sets the ship on fire.
