The Little Mermaid is the last traditionally animated film to use hand-painted production cels; it was also first movie to introduce the CAPS system and the final Disney film to use the famous multiplane camera marking the end of an era for traditional hand-drawn animation. The setup was a gift to Feature Animation president Peter Schneider. It features images of nearly every character in the film; Ariel, Eric, Max, Scuttle, Sebastian, King Triton, Ursula, Flounder. The gift cel contains hand lettering with a dedication to Jeffery Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney, and Peter Schneider that reads in part, "Meanwhile the east coast painters are delighted with glee for they for they had a chance to be part of movie making history."
