Following our recent first glimpse of the villainous Ursula in a new TV spot for The Little Mermaid, we have a first proper look at Sebastian the crab thanks to a leaked promo image.
The pic appears to be taken from a tie-in book, and features Ariel's (Halle Bailey) little crustacean pal, who was a major highlight of the animated version. He will be voiced by Daveed Diggs in the live-action remake.
As you can see, Seb looks a lot more like an actual crab here, which we can see some fans taking issue with.

We still don't know much about this take on the story, but based on what we've seen so far, director Rob Marshall won't be taking too many liberties with the animated classic it's based upon.
Bailey stars alongside Jonah-Hauer King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
The Little Mermaid will feature music from the animated original, as well as four new songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also compose original music for Mermaid along with Alan Menken.
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The movie is set to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.

in Disney, Movies Posted on February 26, 2023 by Jess Colopy Leave a comment
Walt Disney Pictures released the latest trailer for the live-action The Little Mermaid (2023) earlier this month. In it, fans got a closer look at Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel and the first-ever look at Melissa McCarthy as the villainous sea witch Ursula.
Fans previously got a look at Ariel’s best friend, Flounder the fish (Jacob Tremblay). Some criticized the live-action form of the classic character, while others were excited at the unique art style. Now, the live-action redesign of another animated animal, Sebastian the crab (Daveed Diggs). Though Sebastian hasn’t starred in a trailer for The Little Mermaid, a still image of the character was leaked on the cover of a children’s book inspired by the movie. u/NotMeAgain999 shared the photo on Reddit:

Source: gamerant.com/little-mermaid-live-action-remake-sebastian-the-crab-first-look-image/The Little Mermaid's Sebastian Gets First Live-Action Look In Leaked Image BY DAN CONLIN PUBLISHED 21 HOURS AGO Sebastian will still be a mainstay in Disney's The Little Mermaid remake, and a new sneak peek reveals that he's got a brand new look.
The Little Mermaid Disney Sebastian cartoon live-action
The Little Mermaid's opinionated little crab known as Sebastian has just gotten his first look revealed from the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney's classic film. For those concerned, there's no need to worry. He's definitely a crab.
Boasting arguably the most beloved character named Sebastian outside of Parks and Recreation, The Little Mermaid caught the attention of many when Disney announced a live-action retelling of its beloved animated feature. While it's unknown how much the film will deviate from its origins (though the plot itself appears intact), a few aspects are pretty safe to confirm. The main character is a young mermaid named Ariel, the villain is a squid lady named Ursula, and it's got a crab named Sebastian. Now eager fans can finally get a sneak peek at that quirky crustacean. It's thanks to, of all things, a puzzle.
As shown in a post from Disney fan Twitter account @mmdisney200, the look at Sebastian comes from a tie-in jigsaw puzzle based on The Little Mermaid remake. The finished image features stylized versions of Ariel and Sebastian, among other sea creatures. But the real story comes from, oddly enough, the box. Along with a preview of the completed puzzle, it also features what appears to be a promotional shot of the little guy as he'll be seen in The Little Mermaid movie.
New Little Mermaid puzzle coming out soon 😍 closer look at Sebastian! 🦀 pic.twitter.com/wGKaE5Npp6 — Mario🫧🧜🏽♀️ (@mmdisney200) February 26, 2023
The Little Mermaid Sebastian
Far from the cartoony version of Sebastian seen in Disney's original The Little Mermaid, this one looks like the animators and artists are going for a more realistic interpretation to fit the live-action aspect. Sebastian looks like a realistic crab, but he's also as red as a steamed lobster and features just the hint of a mouth beneath his stalk-like eyes. Seemingly keeping with Disney's trend of keeping things more grounded for its live-action remakes, this take on the character will probably need to use a different approach to his dancing style during "Under The Sea."
The live-action version will star Halle Bailey as Ariel, playing a role that has already inspired heartwarming reactions from little girls who love The Little Mermaid. Based on the previous previews and trailers, she's got a pretty spot-on look for the character. But she'll also be joined by Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula, who got her own sneak peek in a recent trailer. Aside from them, Sebastian will be voiced by Daveed Diggs, and Ariel's other friends, Flounder the fish and Scuttle the seagull, feature the vocal talents of Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina, respectively. Finally, Jonah Hauer-King and Javier Bardem round things out on the live-action front as they play love interest Prince Eric and Ariel's intimidating father, King Triton, respectively.
The Little Mermaid remake looks promising, and fans will surely flock to it, despite the unfortunate racial discrimination and hate Bailey has been facing. But she's proven that she's strong, and there are tons of folks who have her back against the mindless vitriol. So here's hoping those venomous voices are silenced when they see the film.
The Little Mermaid is set to release in U.S. theaters on May 26th, 2023.
