One of the most successful animated films from Walt Disney Animation is “The Little Mermaid” and the classic story is set to go through not just one retelling, but a second.
Disney is going to be releasing a live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” in cinemas on 26th May 2023, which will star Halle Bailey in the title role.
According to some new trademarks that have been listed, Disney Junior is also working on a new project, called “Ariel”, which is likely to be a new version of “The Little Mermaid” for pre-school ages.
There are a number of trademarks being applied for, including for entertainment services; education services; distribution services and production services. In addition to trademarks for a large number of merchandise items, clothing, footwear and headwear. In addition to paper products and non-medicated cosmetics.
Disney Junior has recently had success with a new modern take on the classic “Alice In Wonderland” story, with “Alice’s Wonderland Bakery”, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Disney do the same with their other major female characters.
Disney hasn’t officially announced that it is developing a new pre-school series, “Disney Junior Ariel”, but with the new live-action film and it being over 30 years since the original animated film was released, these trademark listings do indicate that Disney is planning a major new campaign of merchandise and entertainment services.

As part of its panel at the Annecy Film Festival, Disney TV Animation has confirmed that it will announce a new animated series from a "well-known Disney property."
The studio is responsible for the 'Operation Big Hero' and 'Tangled' series.
Operation Big Hero? I think they meant Big Hero 6. Does that show have a different name in another language/country?

ANNECY — In what looks like one of the biggest announcements at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival, Disney Branded Television has greenlit a new animated series for preschoolers, “Disney Junior’s Ariel,” inspired by the hugely popular story of “The Little Mermaid.”
The announcement is set to be made today by Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, during the Annecy Animation Festival, at a new project and sneak peak picked presentation across the upcoming slate of Disney Branded Television and Disney EMEA titles.
The new series follows a young Ariel and features fan-favorite characters, including King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder, as well as exciting new additions. “Disney Junior’s Ariel” is set to debut on Disney platforms worldwide in 2024.
Set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica, the series turns on Ariel and her fun-filled, action-packed mermaid adventures with her friends.
Driven by a deep and unending curiosity about the world around her, Ariel discovers land treasures, like a big floppy hat, squeaky rubber ducky and whisk, that she collects and keeps safe in her crystal cavern, the synopsis runs.
The treasures may also help Ariel solve problems. In a play that looks set to charm pre-schoolers, when she makes a discovery, Ariel is filled with joy, and her mermaid tail, “which changes colors depending on her emotions, lights up and shimmers.”
“Full of charm, big ideas and a powerful voice, ‘Disney Junior’s Ariel’ is coming into her own, learning how to discover and appreciate the world around her and use her voice to inspire others,” the synopsis adds.
“For more than 30 years, the story of ‘The Little Mermaid’ has been beloved by audiences all over the world. It brings me so much joy to be able to introduce our new Disney Junior version of Ariel to preschoolers everywhere,” said Davis.
“As we were developing ‘Disney Junior’s Ariel,’ we knew that we wanted to create an atmosphere that was vibrant and magical and showcased our young Ariel’s imagination, which, like our preschool audience watching at home, is as big as the sea,” added Alyssa Sapire, senior vice president of development, series and strategy for Disney Junior.
“Disney Junior’s Ariel” is executive produced by Lynne Southerland (“Mulan II,” “Happily Ever After”). Norma P. Sepulveda (“Elena of Avalor”) and Keith Wagner (“TrollsTopia”) serve as story editors. Ezra Edmond (“Disney+ Draw Me a Story”) is producer, Kuni Tomita Bowen (“Dora the Explorer”) its supervising director, and Chrystin Garland (“Solar Opposites”) its art director.
The series is produced by Wild Canary (“Miles from Tomorrowland”) in association with Disney Junior.
The Caribbean hosts a stunning range of peoples, countries, cultures and landscapes. Picking up on this, the multicultural diversity of the Caribbean is highlighted in the animated series through music, food, festivals, fashion, language and folklore.
Serving as cultural consultant on the series, Dr. Patricia Saunders, professor of English and hemispheric Caribbean studies and director of graduate studies at the University of Miami and author of two books. Sean Skeete, chair of Berklee College of Music’s ensemble department, is the Caribbean music consultant.

After making a splash on the big screen, Disney’s reimagined Little Mermaid is returning to TV with a self-titled series aimed at a preschool audience.
“Set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica,” Disney Junior’s Ariel follows King Triton’s youngest daughter as she “embarks on fun-filled, action-packed adventures with her friends,” according to the official synopsis. “Driven by a deep and unending curiosity about the world around her, Ariel discovers land treasures, like a big floppy hat, squeaky rubber ducky and whisk, that she collects and keeps safe in her crystal cavern. Sometimes, Ariel uses the treasures to help solve problems. With each discovery, Ariel is filled with joy, and her mermaid tail, which changes colors depending on her emotions, lights up and shimmers.”
The news was announced on Tuesday by Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis at the Annecy International Film Festival.
“For more than 30 years, the story of The Little Mermaid has been beloved by audiences all over the world,” Davis said. “It brings me so much joy to be able to introduce our new Disney Junior version of Ariel to preschoolers everywhere.”
This marks the second time Disney has produced an Ariel-centric TV series. The Little Mermaid, a small-screen adaptation of the original 1989 movie, aired for three seasons on CBS from 1992 to 1994. Unlike that show, Ariel clearly draws inspiration from the 2023 live-action Little Mermaid, which stars Halle Bailey as the undersea princess.
Ariel is slated to premiere across multiple Disney platforms in 2024.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has been garnering box-office success and strong soundtrack streaming tallies alike, and the new version of the 1989 classic can now add another accolade. On Tuesday (June 13), Disney Branded Television announced that it greenlit a new animated series titled Disney Junior’s Ariel inspired by Halle Bailey‘s Ariel.
Intended for preschoolers, the new series is based on the classic story of The Little Mermaid and will follow an 8-year-old Ariel on new journeys and adventures in Atlantica and beyond. Other beloved Little Mermaid characters set to appear in the series include King Triton, Ursula, Sebastian and Flounder. Ariel’s two best friends, merchildren named Lucia and Fernie, will make their debut.
The first peek at the character designs for Disney Junior’s Ariel reveal a young Ariel inspired by Bailey’s version of the iconic Disney princess. Complete with flowing red locs and rich brown skin, the young Ariel of the new animated series will carry the legacy of Halle’s live-action performance. Disney Junior’s Ariel will also highlight the multicultural diversity of the Caribbean under cultural consultant Dr. Patrice Saunders, professor of English and hemispheric Caribbean studies at the University of Miami. Chair of Berklee College of Music’s ensemble department Sean Skeete will serve as the series’ Caribbean music consultant.
Bailey’s turn as Ariel in The Little Mermaid helped carry the film and its accompanying soundtrack to much success. To date, the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has earned more than $417 million at the worldwide box office, and the accompanying soundtrack — which features contributions from original composer Alan Menken, alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Jonah Hauer-King and Awkwafina — climbed to No. 1 on Billboard‘s Soundtracks chart and No. 21 on the Billboard 200, surpassing the peak of the original soundtrack on both charts.

Disney Branded Television hosted an epic press conference at Annecy Festival today, making plenty of big announcements. But perhaps the biggest was Ariel, a Disney Junior series coming in 2024. Inspired by both the 1989 animated The Little Mermaid and the recent live-action reimagining, Ariel follows the 8-year-old mermaid on undersea adventures with her friends. Wrapping up the press conference, Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis welcomed producer Lynne Southerland to the stage to provide a few more details about the series.
Parents who grew up with The Little Mermaid will find that Ariel’s spirit is still curious as ever in this new series. But there will be some differences to the show, since it is catered to a preschool audience. One of the biggest ones is that Ursula, who is part of the series, hasn’t yet been banished by King Triton. She’s Ariel’s loving aunt who uses her magic powers for good. And while Ariel is adventurous, her curiosity won’t be taking her above the surface in the series. She will also have a collection of new sea friends, such as Ravi, an orange sunglass-wearing octopus who runs the Atlantica juice stand.
Ariel will do plenty of singing in the series, with a song confirmed to be included in every episode. Lynn shared that they’re leaning into musical styles of the Caribbean, specifically sharing that merengue, calypso, and chutney soca are being used. Similarly, the look of Ariel’s undersea world is heavily inspired by the colors commonly used on houses in the Caribbean. She quoted art director Chrystin Garland as referring to the world as “one colorful ocean.” Lynn’s love for the Caribbean shone throughout the brief discussion, adding that her husband has family in St. Thomas and they were married in St. Lucia.

ANNECY, France — Disney on Tuesday announced a new animated children's series inspired by its 1989 film "The Little Mermaid," which like the live-action adaptation released last month will feature a black Ariel.
"Disney Junior's Ariel," a musical series for toddlers, is currently in production and is due for release next year.
It depicts the underwater adventures of Ariel, the eight-year-old mermaid princess, and her friends including Flounder in the fairytale Caribbean-inspired kingdom of Atlantica.
"I'm super excited about Ariel, I certainly didn't think we would have an iconic character like Ariel in a pre-school play world," said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, a subsidiary dedicated to television content. "I'm also very excited to have a character that my daughter can sort of identify and see herself in."
The plan is not a minor consideration for Disney. It faced a racist backlash online after it awarded the role of Ariel to pop singer Halle Bailey for the recently released remake, as opposed to a white actress as in the original.
The House of Mouse, which in recent years stepped up its diversity advocacy, is locked in a standoff with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is seen as a rival to Donald Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
Disney's first black princess appeared only in 2009 as Tiana in the animated feature "The Princess and the Frog."
