Despite a plethora of awful backlash, The Little Mermaid was able to make Disney a little money at the box office. Now, fans have more to be excited for.
The Halle Bailey-led remake will join the 1989 animated original on Disney+ September 6. The company has previously announced that The Little Mermaid will debut on physical media September 19.
The Little Mermaid follows a mermaid princess, Ariel, who is fascinated with the human world and makes a deal with a treacherous sea witch, Ursula. Ariel trades her voice for human legs to impress Prince Eric, whom she saved from a shipwreck, but time is running out.
Directed by Rob Marshall, the film also stars Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy.
The film is still in some theaters and currently sits at $564 million at the global box office.

The Little Mermaid was released in theaters back in May, but it finally has an official Disney+ premiere date, and you can find out when the movie will make a splash on the streaming platform right here! News By JoshWilding - Aug 07, 2023 11:08 AM EST Filed Under: Disney
Despite some early concerns that The Little Mermaid had made a smaller-than-expected slash at the box office, it ultimately grossed $542 million worldwide.
That's a solid result, albeit one that's perhaps a little less than Disney would have liked.
Unfortunately, it's widely believed the remake underperformed in several international locations due to it featuring a Black lead, a sad reminder of the state of the world today.
On a brighter note, though, it's been announced that this live-action reimagining of Disney's Oscar-winning animated musical classic The Little Mermaid will premiere on Disney+ September 6!
Disney+ subscribers will be able to access special bonus content, including Oscar winner Javier Bardem as King Triton performing the song "Impossible Child" with music by multiple Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by three-time Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton); "Passing the Dinglehopper," and "Under the Sea - Song Breakdown."
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure.
The youngest of King Tritonâs daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.
While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart.
She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life - and her fatherâs crown - in jeopardy.
The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

We know many of you are eager to watch Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid on Disney+, and the streaming service has today revealed when the movie will be available to watch on the platform. News By JoshWilding - Aug 07, 2023 05:08 PM EST Filed Under: Movies Source: Toonado.com It initially appears as if The Little Mermaid had made a smaller-than-expected slash at the box office.
However, it would go on to gross a solid $542 million worldwide, a haul which is undeniably impressive in this post-pandemic era.
As one of the better live-action remakes from Disney, it was initially criticised for casting Halle Bailey but the singer and actress proved everyone wrong with her fantastic performance.
As for the widely discussed modernisation of outdated lyrics, that proved to be much ado about nothing.
So, when will you be able to watch The Little Mermaid on Disney+?
Well, it's been announced (via Toonado.com) that this live-action reimagining of Disney's Oscar-winning animated musical classic The Little Mermaid will premiere on the streamer starting September 6!

Source: collider.com/the-little-mermaid-live-action-release-date-disney-plus/The Little Mermaidâ Will Swim to Disney+ This Fall BY BRITTA DEVORE PUBLISHED 15 HOURS AGO Halle Bailey joins her animated counterpart on the streamer soon.
THE BIG PICTURE Dive into the deep sea of nostalgia as Disney brings The Little Mermaid to life, arriving on Disney+ this fall. Swim with joy on September 6! Get ready for a splash of enchantment with Halle Bailey leading the breathtaking live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, streaming alongside the animated original.
Halle Bailey and the rest of the cast of Disneyâs live-action The Little Mermaid are about to make a splash on Disney+. Diving onto the streaming platform on September 6, the film will swim up alongside other live-action remakes including Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book. After debuting in theaters on May 26, fans have since been able to bring Arielâs story into their own homes through on-demand purchases on sites including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+. As for those looking to add the title to their at-home collection, physical copies (and all the bonus material that comes with them) will be made available on September 19.
After first adapting the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale of the same name for its animated 1989 movie and cutting most of the traumatizing parts to give the main character a better ending than in the chilling story, the latest adaptation of The Little Mermaid also made some changes from the last time the studio wrapped its tentacles around the tale. Blending the old with the new, composer Alan Menken, who worked on the animated featureâs soundtrack, returned to team up with Lin-Manuel Miranda (Encanto, Hamilton) to update the songs for a new generation.
Along with Bailey in the title role, the film also stars Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as the sea witch Ursula, Daveed Diggs as the crab Sebastian, Awkwafina as Arielâs companion and bird Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Arielâs best pal and fish Flounder, Javier Bardem as Arielâs father King Triton, Noma Dumezweni as Ericâs mother Queen Selina and Art Malik as Queen Selinaâs right-hand man Sir Grimsby.
How Did The Little Mermaid Perform in Theaters? One of the most talked about releases of 2023, audiences, for the most part, turned out to buy tickets to see The Little Mermaid on the big screen. Clocking in at a whopping 2 hours and 15 minutes of runtime, it was never fully clear if the Rob Marshall-helmed film would be a hit or miss with Disneyâs loyal base. That is, until its opening weekend when it quickly surpassed other box office giants, like Fast X, and never stopped swimming. After clocking in at around $547 million ahead of its digital release, the film earned a big payoff, proving that thereâs still a spot for live-action features from the House of Mouse.
Check out a trailer for The Little Mermaid below and dive under the sea when the film arrives to Disney+ on September 6.

Hamilton alum Daveed Diggs, former child star Jacob Tremblay, Crazy Rich Asians actress Awkwafina are all part of the project.

As all mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans Ariel defy's convention and follow her heart by making a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula (McCarthy).

The 2023 version of The Little Mermaid features tunes from song writer Alan Merken of Beauty and the Beast fame, with lyrics from Howard Ashman and new lyrics by Hamilton song writer Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Iconic songs from The Little Mermaid soundtrack have had their lyrics changed to reflect consent in the live action remake of the 1989 Disney film.
Composer Alan Menken told Vanity Fair in April: 'There are some lyric changes in Kiss the Girl because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel].
The lyrics to the original song - which encourage Prince Eric to kiss Ariel before it's too late and without asking for her consent - include the chorus lines: 'Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do. Possible she wants you too. There is one way to ask her. It don't take a word. Not a single word. Go on and kiss the girl.'

The mermaid (and merman) of the moment might be popping up on screens right now in Barbie, but Disney would like to remind you that The Little Mermaid also came out this year. If you didnât make it to the theater to see Halle Baileyâs star-making turn as the live-action Ariel and youâve been holding out for Disney+, good news: it debuts there September 6.
According to a Disney press release, the streaming arrival brings with it bonus content, including King Triton (Javier Bardem)âs performance of the song âImpossible Child,â written by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, plus âPassing the Dinglehopperâ (a feature thatâs available elsewhere, described as follows: âAriel met Ariel when Halle Bailey worked with Jodi Bensonâthe voice of Ariel in the original animated movieâwho appears in a clever cameo in the live-action filmâ), and the self-explanatory âUnder the Sea â Song Breakdown.â
So where does this release fall among The Little Mermaidâs other post-theatrical arrivals? The Little Mermaid is now available on digital platforms, with its Disney+ debut on September 6; it hits physical media (including DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K) September 19.

Disney is having a rough year with most of its 2023 releases being box office duds. Marvel Studios has been the most unreliable it has been in years. It is estimated that the House of Mouse has lost $1 billion in 2023. Disneyâs live action remakes which have proven to be successful in the past are failing as well. The reboot Iâm referring to is The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Melissa McCarthy as the evil Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and more. There was a lot of controversy and chatter regarding the film but that didnât help its box office performance. If you happen to have missed the film in theatres, its box office numbers suggests you have, then now you have a chance to watch it at your house as the film will soon be available on Disney Plus.
The Little Mermaid Reboot Is Soon Coming To Disney Plus!
Just one month ago, we got an update that the Disney reboot was available for digital purchase in the US from Tuesday, July 25th on the distributing platforms like Amazon, Apple, Vudu, and Google. Also, the physical formats of The Little Mermaid remake like Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD will be available for purchase on Tuesday, September 19. When it comes to the streaming release date it was suspected that it would be alongside its digital release which is approximately a 60 days theatrical window.
However, Disney really surprised us as the reboot didnât release in July or in August as well. Shared on the official Disney+ X (formerly Twitter) account, âAll the wonder, magic and FUN ofâ The Little Mermaid is set to swim onto the streaming platform on September 6. Avatar 2 also took more than 60 days to come to Disney+ but that was because of the sequelâs unsurmountable success. The Little Mermaid made minimum to no dent at the box office. So, Iâm not sure why it took so much time. Check out the full post below:

August 7, 2023 10:43am The Little Mermaid Halle Bailey stars as The Little Mermaid Disney
Disneyâs live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid is hitting Disney+ on Sept. 6, after a very hearty 103 theatrical window.
The Little Mermaid debuted over the four-day Memorial Day weekend to $118.8M domestic. Worldwide it had a $164M start.
The pic, directed by Rob Marshall, grossed north of $564M worldwide, however, wasnât the billion success of other Disney live-action takes of their animated pics, i.e. Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Little Mermaid faced headwinds at offshore markets due to the casting of Halle Bailey in the lead role; this despite rave reviews, Deadlineâs Pete Hammond extolling that the actress âsimply soars, a gorgeously conceived Disney princess who longs to become human just to check it out. Baileyâs vocals alone are the price of admission including making her signature âPart Of Your Worldâ thrilling to behold.â
The Little Mermaid fared better stateside than overseas, grossing $297M to $267M.
The early September frame is not one to be ignored for Disney+, which began eventizing it during Covid with the streaming release of live-action pic, Mulan. That movie saw its theatrical release halted due to the closure of cinemas. Mulan debuted on Sept 4, 2020, and pulled in per Samba TV 1.12M viewers over its three-day opening weekend.

Disneyâs live-action remake of âThe Little Mermaidâ will finally arrive on Disney+ on Sept. 6. The Disney+ release will come with some special features, including a song breakdown of âUnder the Sea,â and Javier Bardemâs performance of âImpossible Childâ.
The streaming release date, announced Monday morning, is later than the typical 90-day window. Rob Marhsallâs remake of the classic 1989 film premiered at the end of May, earning a splashy $117.5 million over its opening four-day weekend.
The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, the daughter of King Triton (Javier Bardem), ruler of an ocean kingdom, who becomes enamored with a prince (Jonah Hauer-King) above the surface. Her desire to be with him spurs her to make a pact with Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to give up her soaring voice in return for a human form. Marshallâs installment revisits many of the most beloved songs from the original film, including the iconic âPart of Your Worldâ and âUnder the Sea.â
âThereâs nothing âlittleâ about Marshallâs âLittle Mermaid,â wrote Variety film critic Peter Debruge in his review. âRunning nearly an hour longer than the 1989 toon, itâs a veritable sea monster of a movie, dramatically expanding the above- and below-water realms of the Caribbean-set original, while adding songs and characters (e.g., Noma Dumezweni as the Queen) like so many barnacles to the hull of the ship.â
In order to stream âThe Little Mermaid,â youâll have to sign up for Disney+, with subscriptions starting at $9.99/month. You can also sign up for the Disney Bundle, which includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ for $12.99/month.
The original âThe Little Mermaidâ and its sequels are also available to stream on Disney+, while all the films, including Blu-ray versions, are available to rent/purchase on Amazon.

Source: screenrant.com/little-mermaid-disney-streaming-success-box-office-bad-save/Little Mermaid's Streaming Debut Can Save Disney's Remake After $500 Million Box Office Letdown BY ADRIENNE TYLER PUBLISHED 16 HOURS AGO The Little Mermaid is preparing for its streaming debut on Disney+, and if it goes well, it can save the movie and the franchise's future.
The Little Mermaid Ariel and Ursula with a money background
SUMMARY Despite mixed reviews and underwhelming box office numbers, The Little Mermaid has the potential to be saved by a successful streaming run on Disney+. Disney's live-action remakes have faced criticism for various reasons, but the streaming platform offers an opportunity for audiences to revisit and potentially change their opinion of the film. The family-friendly nature of The Little Mermaid makes it a perfect fit for Disney+, and the success of the film on the streaming platform could determine the future of the franchise with potential sequels or spinoffs.
Disney+ is preparing for the arrival of the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and its streaming debut can be what saves the movie after its box office letdown. The live-action trend is still very much alive over at Disney, with the studio having a long list of upcoming live-action remakes of some of its animated classics. Its most recent one is The Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall and loosely based on Hans Christian Andersenâs fairy tale of the same name, and starring Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
The Little Mermaid took the same story as the 1989 animated version and made a couple of changes to it to better fit a live-action and modern format. The Little Mermaid follows Ariel, a mermaid princess fascinated by the human world. This leads her to make a dangerous deal with sea witch Ursula, who turns her into a human in exchange for her voice, but she has to get a kiss from Prince Eric if she wants to stay human. The Little Mermaid got mixed reviews from critics and while it wasnât a box office flop, it wasnât the big success the Mouse House was hoping for â however, now that The Little Mermaid is coming to Disney+, streaming can save it after its not-so-good theatrical run.
The Little Mermaid Needs A Strong Disney+ Streaming Run
little-mermaid-songs-live-action-remake-ranked-
Disney has been relying heavily on nostalgia with its many live-action remakes of animated classics, and though some have worked well (like Guy Ritchieâs Aladdin), the studio keeps making the same mistakes in almost every live-action remake. The Little Mermaid suffered from old mistakes like unrealistic CGI animals, very dark scenes, unnecessary additions, and failure to replicate the magic of the animated version, but even with all that and more, The Little Mermaid wasnât a big failure. As mentioned above, the criticsâ reactions were mixed and it performed well at the box office, but by Disneyâs standards, The Little Mermaid was a letdown.
The world of streaming offers movies a second chance to succeed when their original theatrical runs donât go well, and in many cases, streaming runs have been enough to save movies from their past failures. The Little Mermaid can shake off its not-so-good box office performance and bad initial reactions if it performs well on Disney+, boosting its popularity and inviting the audience to revisit and reconsider their opinion of the movie. Surely, a strong streaming run wonât change The Little Mermaidâs box office numbers, but it can give it new life and a new chance to succeed with a wider audience.
Why The Little Mermaid Is Perfect For Disney+
The Little Mermaid Kiss the Girl Lyrics New Changes
Although The Little Mermaid was made to be released theatrically, the truth is that itâs better suited for Disney+. Although it addresses topics that the animated movie doesnât, thus appealing to a more mature audience, The Little Mermaid is still a family-friendly movie, and thatâs the type of content that Disney+ prioritizes. Given that itâs a remake of an animated classic, The Little Mermaid is the type of movie parents would show their children, and it's a version through which younger generations will get to know Ariel, Eric, and their story.
Disneyâs live-action remakes donât have the best reputation, leading the audience to lose interest in them and choose to wait until their streaming release to give them a chance. This actually plays in The Little Mermaidâs favor, as all those who didnât want to pay to watch it at the cinema can now watch it from the comfort of their homes, and those who werenât interested in it at all can now watch it out of curiosity. The Little Mermaid is a perfect Disney+ release, giving it a brighter future after its theatrical release wasnât so bright.
Little Mermaid's Disney+ Success Could Decide The Franchise's Future
the little mermaid ursula
Along with the live-action trend comes a sequels trend, and if a Disney movie is a success, itâs very likely it will get a sequel or a spinoff. The Little Mermaid, while not a big box office success, already got some extended media, such as a series of books and a CGI-animated series that was announced for Disney Junior. An Ursula spinoff was pitched by Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem given the connection The Little Mermaid gave Ursula and King Triton by making them siblings, but the development of this and any sequels ultimately depended on how well the movie performed during its theatrical run. However, if The Little Mermaid becomes a streaming success, spinoffs and/or sequels could be considered, thus saving the franchiseâs future.

Disney's The Little Mermaid was finally given an official date for when it will be added to Disney+, but it also set a frustrating record in the process.
Disney recently announced that The Little Mermaid will be available to stream on the Disney+ streaming service on Wednesday, September 6.
The film had a fairly successful run at the box office, netting $567.56 million, but it wasn't considered a financial success.
However, it is also regarded as one of the better live-action remakes that Disney has recently released (its current 7.2 IMDb rating is tied with Christopher Robin as the third-highest score of any of Disney's live-action remakes, with Cruella's 7.3 and The Jungle Book's 7.4 being the only ones higher).
The Little Mermaid Sets Frustrating Disney+ Record
Disney
The Little Mermaid's Wednesday, September 6 Disney+ premiere date will officially set the record for the longest gap between a theatrical release and streaming date of any movie produced under the Walt Disney Pictures umbrella since the launch of Disney+.
When The Little Mermaid comes out on the streaming platform, it will have been 103 days since it debuted in theaters, and since fans have come to expect fairly short theater-to-streaming wait times, this new record will definitely be frustrating for many subscribers.
In comparison to other theatrical releases that were later added to Disney+, The Little Mermaid's 103 days is a much bigger gap:
Onward: March 6, 2020 - April 3, 2020 (28 days) Mulan: September 4, 2020 - September 4, 2020 (Premiere Access day-and-date, 0 days) Soul: December 25, 2020 - December 25, 2020 (Day-and-date, 0 days) Raya and the Last Dragon: March 5, 2021 - March 5, 2021 (Premiere Access day-and-date, 0 days) Cruella: May 28, 2021 - May 28, 2021 (Premiere Access day-and-date, 0 days) Luca: June 18, 2021 - June 18, 2021 (Day-and-date, 0 days) Jungle Cruise: July 30, 2021 - July 30, 2021 (Premiere Access day-and-date, 0 days) Encanto: November 3, 2021 - December 24, 2021 (51 days) Turning Red: March 11, 2022 - March 11, 2022 (Day-and-date, 0 days) Lightyear: June 17, 2022 - August 3, 2022 (47 days) Strange World: November 23, 2022 - December 23, 2022 (30 days) Elemental: June 16, 2023 - TBD (At least 77 days) Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: June 30, 2023 - TBD (At least 52 days) Haunted Mansion: July 28, 2023 - TBD (At least 24 days) Why Is The Little Mermaid Taking So Long to Stream? The Little Mermaid did gross over half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, so there were a lot of people eager to see the movie.
It also garnered a lot of praise from critics and viewers, causing the overall fan interest to go up for those who hadn't seen the movie yet.
It is important to note that The Little Mermaid wasn't available for digital purchase until July 25.
This means that if Disney would have added the movie to the streaming platform sometime in August, many people would likely not purchase the digital version since they would only have to wait a few weeks to see it with a Disney+ subscription.
With Disney waiting until September to put it out on the streamer, that allows the company to ultimately make more money with the film. Since it was such a success and so well-liked, some fans would not want to wait all the way until September to see it again and be more inclined to purchase it digitally.
The Little Mermaid will be available to stream on Disney+ beginning Wednesday, September 6.

Remember the days when we used to wait months and months for a film we saw in the theatres to arrive on VCR or DVD? Nowadays itâs more like weeks from the filmâs final run in the theatre before it lands on a streaming platform somewhere on the internet. The Little Mermaid, however, has not been so speedy; maybe sheâs still figuring out how to run on those new legs of hers.
The Little Mermaid was one of Disneyâs better rated live-action films, though, despite all the hype, it was not a financial success for the studio, pulling in $567.56 million at the box office. Though this isnât a bad run by any means, and currently lands the adaption in seventh place on the global box office list, per Box Office Mojo. It hasnât been a stellar return for Disney, which spent $250 million on production and $140 million in global marketing plus other expenditures. The film had to make just over $560 million to break even, which it just about did, but it still fell well short of expectations.
The film will soon be swimming on over to Disney Plus and crashing on the platform on Sept. 6. This means that since The Little Mermaid debuted in theatres it will have been 103 days between its theatrical release and arrival on streaming. This has set the record for the longest wait between a theatrical release and streaming release for a Disney film since the beginning of Disney Plus, which may have left some fans slightly perturbed.

For comparison, letâs take a look at the length of time from theatre to streaming for other Disney offerings. Onward arrived in theatres on March 6, 2020, and then on Disney Plus on April 3, 2020, for a total of 28 days. The popular Encanto was 51 days, from November 3, 2021 to December 24, 2021, and Strange World was 30 days. So for The Little Mermaid to be taking itâs sweet time is a little odd, most likely the studio will trying to be squeezing that box-office as tight as they can before allowing Disney Plus subscribers access to it.
The movie did receive a fair amount of critical praise and positive audience response, which prompted others to go see it a little later than its initial release, so keeping it in theatres was a financially prudent idea. The other case that has been made by The Direct is that the studio would have been holding off until after the digital release, which came on July 25, again with the hopes they could make more money from people buying The Little Mermaid before it gets added to Disney Plus.
For the rest of us, we just have to wait till Sept. 6 when it will become free to watch (outside of the subscription fee of course) on Disney Plus.

The Little Mermaid The danger in Disney remaking its animated back catalogue as live action has always been in staining the memory of a much-loved childrenâs film (The Jungle Book will never be the same again for me). Rob Marshallâs splashy new version of the 1989 fantasy musical mostly keeps it simple, with tweaks to the plot (Ariel gets more agency) and soundtrack (three new songs). The one major change is the colourblind casting of Black actor Halle Bailey as the mermaid princess who falls for a human prince. Itâs a refreshing move, and the engaging Bailey knocks it out of the park. The photo-realistic talking crabs and birds are less convincing, but movie musical veteran Marshall is a steady hand at the tiller. Simon Wardell Wednesday 6 September, Disney+

This 1952 film is notable for the mic-drop moment of Edith Evansâs Lady Bracknell exclaiming: âA handbag?â However, courtesy of the original playâs author Oscar Wilde, Anthony Asquithâs elegant adaptation is full of other deliciously quotable lines. The summer may be over, but that isn't stopping Disney+ from streaming some blockbuster titles this September.
Fresh from the big screen is Rob Marshall's live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel alongside an ensemble cast that includes Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Jonah Hauer-King as Eric. Collider's Ross Bonaime praised the film in his review proclaiming:
"The Little Mermaid is one of the closest of Disneyâs live-action remakes to capture the magic that made the animated original such a classic. By further expanding this world and these characters, Marshall and Magee are doing exactly the type of expansion these remakes should be going for, and sets a strong template for Disney going forward."
New episodes of the live-action Star Wars series Ahsoka will also be available on Disney+ throughout the month following Anakin Skywalker's former padawan as she faces new threats in her search for Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger after the events of the hit animated series Star Wars Rebels.
Other titles making their way to the streaming service in September include a new season of I Am Groot, and the documentary short series Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory.

Is The Little Mermaid streaming? Pictured: Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid (Image credit: Disney) Christina Izzo BY CHRISTINA IZZO LAST UPDATED 21 DAYS AGO
It's one of Disneyâs biggest live-action movies in years, but is The Little Mermaid streaming yet? And when will it be popping up on Disney Plus?
Twenty-three-year-old singer-actress Halle Bailey assumes the role of the iconic red-haired mermaid this time around, unleashing a wave of mermaidcore fashions and frosted eyeshadow looks with her.
Following Emma Watson and Lily James as live-action princesses (the former having played Belle and the latter Cinderella), Bailey's casting marked only the second time that a Black actor has ever portrayed a Disney princess (after Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Tiana in The Princess and the Frog), and the performer didn't take on the responsibility lightly.
âI want the little girl in me and the little girls just like me who are watching to know that theyâre special, and that they should be a princess in every single way,â Bailey told Variety. âThereâs no reason that they shouldnât be. That reassurance was something that I needed.â
As for playing Ariel onscreen, Bailey said she could relate to the iconic character: âHer sense of longing, her searching for herself, was something that I could resonate with. She knew where she wanted to go, and she wasnât going to let anybody stop her.â
So, when can you watch The Little Mermaid from the comfort of your own couch? Here's what to know.
IS 'THE LITTLE MERMAID' STREAMING? As of press time, The Little Mermaid can only be enjoyed by heading to the movie theater or via VOD, like Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Vudu for $19.99.
The film had its world premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday, May 8, and was then released theatrically on Friday, May 26.
WHEN IS 'THE LITTLE MERMAID' COMING TO DISNEY PLUS? Seeing as how The Little Mermaid is a Disney property, it will of course become available on the Disney Plus platform. And we finally have an official streaming release date: the Rob Marshall-directed remake will be added to the platform on Wednesday, September 6.
That means you will need a Disney Plus subscription to stream The Little Mermaid, both the remake as well as the animated original and its sequels. Current subscription options include the ad-supported Basic plan for $7.99 per month or the commercial-free Premium plan for $10.99 monthly.
